The document describes several changes the student made to their music video concept during the course. Originally, the student wanted to include actors in animal costumes in a park setting inspired by Alice in Wonderland, but decided this would be too expensive. The student then developed concepts focused on using song lyrics as props but also realized these would be too costly. After struggling to find a suitable song, the student chose "Yellow Light" by Of Monsters and Men, inspiring a final concept of handing out yellow balloons in a park. The student also had to change costume and research tasks due to adjustments like selecting a new song and band.

2. MUSIC VIDEO CONCEPTS
During this course, I have made several changes to my music video. When thinking of concepts, I
had to decide what I could realistically achieve, therefore, these ideas changed frequently.
For example, during early concepts for my music video, I wanted my actor to be hallucinating in a
park surrounded by actors in animal costumes, making it quite Alice in Wonderland inspired. I
also wanted to use the fish-eye lens for much of my music video, to enhance the hallucination
effect.
After much consideration and research I decided that the cost of hiring many animal costumes
would be too much. I also learnt that many previous A2 students have done music videos which
were inspired by Alice in Wonderland, and decided I wanted a more original and unique idea.
This then led to me starting to develop an idea about using the lyrics of the song as the main prop
for the video. Initially I was going to include about 10 other actors, in addition to my main actor,
who would present the lyrics in an interesting and exciting way. For example, I was going to get
t-shirts printed with the lyrics on them. However, after researching several shops which could
do this, I realised it would be too expensive. I also realised that I had to find a song with
interesting and unique lyrics, otherwise the t-shirts would not be eye-catching enough. I was
also going to include another actor in a hat and coat reading a newspaper which had the lyrics
on. Although I did love this idea, I knew that the extra cost for costume would be too much, and
in the end concept I decided to use, this would not be relevant.
After struggling to find an appropriate song for my music video, I eventually came across one
which inspired my concept for my music video which I ended up using. This involved using
yellow balloons as signifiers of hope and happiness. The end concept became my actor
handing out yellow balloons to people in the park and tying them around trees, as if she were
‘spreading happiness’. She then has one last balloon when a ‘thug’ in a hooded jumper runs up
to her and pops her last balloon.
3. SONG/BAND CHOICE
Initially, I investigated using the OneRepublic song ‘Marchin On’ for my music
video. Although I felt this song would work well due to it being in the indie/rock
genre, eventually I realised it was not the right song for my music video.
When I was considering using the lyrics of the song as a key part of my music
video, I realised that this song only had one key lyric ‘Marchin On’ and this
would limit the amount of lyrics I could use.
In the end I decided I did not think the song would work very well for my music
video and I didn’t think it was interesting enough to grab my audiences’
attention.
Therefore when researching other indie/rock artists, I decided to choose an Of
Monsters and Men song, ‘Yellow Light’. This song inspired my narrative for my
video. This involved several yellow balloons, all representing hope and
happiness, being given out to people in a park by my actor.
This change in song delayed my shooting, as I needed to re-do several research
tasks I had already done on my original song choice.
4. COSTUME
Originally, I was going to have my main actor wearing a leather jacket
because it fit in with the indie/rock genre of fashion and I also thought
the weather would be appropriate for this type of clothing.
However, by the time I had to film my music video, the weather had
changed dramatically and become much colder so for the benefit of my
actor I decided to change the jacket to a coat. I did this because I did
not want the cold weather to affect her performance. For example, I did
not want her to be too cold and hold back in her performance, therefore
I changed the costume accordingly.
5. RESEARCH TASKS
Due to several changes I made, such as changing the band I used and the
song I used, I had to go back to several research tasks such as
‘Research in to the band/artist I have chosen’ and edit them accordingly.
This took a lot of time and held me back quite a bit, therefore I learnt
that I should next time perhaps leave these specific types of tasks as
late as I can because they could be subject to change.
Also, a few planning tasks had to be changed such as ‘contact with the
band/artist’ because I had changed the band I had chosen to Of
Monsters and Men.
