Evaluation Question One: In what
ways does your media product use,
develop or challenge forms and
conventions of real media products?
MUSIC VIDEO
Mise En Scene

my music video is part narrative, part cutaway to the ‘artist’ lip syncing. I have seen this done in music
videos such as: Lorde Royals. After further research into music videos prior to my first attempt at filming
not fitting the look I wanted for my music video, I found I enjoyed the style of Ed Sheeran’s and Ben
Howards videos, they inspired me as they were simplistic it terms of having a neutral colour palette
throughout. They had a background narrative for example mine being, a young couple who are first
starting to get to know one another. But the narrative didn’t overcomplicate the video and distract from
the song. I also found they used a number of overlays and different shot types, something I reflected in
my final product.

As the artist I chose fits into multiple genres I combined the elements from the more ‘indie’ videos with
more ‘pop’, ‘mainstream’ singers such as Katy Perry and Rihanna who mainly focus on having a couple in
there narratives :For Example ‘Teenage dream, by Katy Perry’ and ‘What’s my Name, By Rihanna’
Costume

The costume I decided was that of the teenage audience, as well as being warm to compliment the
location, time of year and ultimately the colour scheme. Black was a colour I wanted to use in both
outfits to make the characters stand out although I did want to add neutral colours t to the outfits to tie
in with the surroundings e.g. greys, dark greens and browns. When researching similar videos I noticed
trainers were a shoe often worn by the males in the music videos so I included these in order to steer
away from it being perceived as ‘indie

Props

The props were kept to a minimal due to the change of location reoccurring throughout to match the
beat of the music kept simple as to not overcomplicate it, like many music videos these days location
change Is used as a prop rather than actual ‘props’.
Camera Techniques

I have used a variety of shot types in order to represent the couple as equal, I had a lot of centered
shots- and then varied whether it was a close up shot, long shot, mid shot etc. Although I did
experiment with off centered shots as a I feel the variety and contrast worked really well. I liked the
used of over the shoulder shots and shots that began as establishing a location but the couple walked
into to establish the location change as well. I kept the lip synching shots mid shot so it was clear and
simplistic, juxtaposing the actors outdoor scenes against his studio ones.

Narrative

My narrative was about ‘new love’ discovering each other and essentially falling in love. I wanted to
reflect the naiveity of young love by keeping it simplistic and having small gestures included: for

example holding hands laughing with one another, smiling ect. My storyline is not linear and has
includes intercutting shots of the ’artist’ lip synching.

Some music videos don’t hold a clear storyline to them. The original music video for my chosen
song ’Won’t Go Quietly’ was purely a live show, this is something I wanted to steer away from
when recreating the video. Although I don’t like the idea of the lyrics of the song reflecting the
narrative as it looks too cliche I took certain shots to tie in with the lyrics for example : ’Should of
closed that door’ and having them leave the pub with the door closing.
Lip Synching

When preparing my lip synching scenes with Chris I sent him the lyrics and the track to go with them well in advanced.
It took a long time to get him to co-operate due to his nerves but in the end we got there. A recent example of a music
video with good lip synching is:
Wrecking Ball By Miley Cyrus

Miley is a good example to use as she also reflects good use of lip synching in her other new video ‘ We can’t Stop’
Organising Lip Sychning
Cutaway to Lip Synching
The lipsynching is separate and is formed by cutting away to a mid shot of the
singer. This was inspired by the video Royals by Lorde as she does similar. It
estblises the singer separate to the actors a technique I really liked and was
truly inspired by.
Acting

On the filming days there wasn’t much need for acting. As a couple Jenny and Ronnie enjoyed each
others company and the smiles, laughs and conversation were genuine. This was perfect as it looked
really natural for us. Again the couple part of the video was inspired by the likes of Katy Perry and
Rihanna although I kept a more low key naïve look to my music video.
Lighting

I decided to film mainly outside as I liked the autumnal colour scheme although I wanted to create
juxtaposition in terms of lighting with the indoor warm artificial lighting and the cold harsh outdoor
natural lighting.
Anomolies

The weather on filming days was a major setback in terms of shooting outdoors, rain was the main
problem and certain clips had to be disgarded due to water droplets on the lense. I wanted it to be
bright in order to create natural overlays with the camera but due to the weather this was something
that had to be put in after.

My main problem was my first set of filming, although at first I filmed a whole 2 days with separate
actors and separate storyboards. The majority of the filming was shot out of focus, due to them refusing
to take 2 days off to re-film there was a lot of pressure to organise co operative actors quickly. Although
this gave me the time to recreate a much better narrative and essentially a much better video.
DIGIPAK
Annalysing Real Digipak Forms Conventions
The front of the digipak

The front of digipaks are usually filled with
the artist. This is to promote the star to sell the
record and for the audience to feel connected
with the song and the star. A lot of the time
the artists on the front of digipaks are
presented to grab the audience's eye. As well
as this it contains the album name and artist,
which is conventional!

Back of the digipak.

Usually in most digipaks they consist of the
album tracks (tracklist) and bar code which has
the digipak theme running through. The
lettering of the tracks fits in with the genre.
The production company logo,copyright
symbol are provided as well as sometimes
showing contact information such as the
email.
Cd compartment

The CD compartment also continues the
theme . The black back drop is really
effective. This cover will behind the CD holder,
the CD holder is common in digipaks as it
keeps the Cd secure, and yet is still lightweight.
The CD's themselves usually carry on with the
theme although this compartment doesn't
follow many conventions, in fact this part is
down to preference.

Side of the digipak

The side picture of the digipak contains the
album name and artist as well as the reference
number a 7 digit code for example FOJ002.

When researching magazine adverts I learnt
the more simplistic ones worked best, I
decided to keep it simplistic although include
all the forms and conventions. I discovered lots
of different types, the ones that fitted my
artists genre which is heavily hip hop inspired
although it also covers genres such as pop and
indie in some cases as his genre is very
versatile. I discovered it came in two types full
page spread and eighth of a page landscape.
Two I recreated. Myartist would fit best into
the music magazine 'Q' as they contain a range
of artists as well as digipak advertisements
unlike NME.
