All Art, Including Music, Is Directly Influenced By The
All art, including music, is directly influenced by the environment in which the artist lives. It is
impossible to create art in a vacuum, unaffected by the society and events surrounding you. The
time period, location, and social changes and innovations can have a direct effect on the art
produced. Political events, especially wars, can have a strong influence on the music and art
produced at that time. For example, music may become more patriotic during a time of war as the
composers strive to publicize their national pride. I will explore this idea through the composer Igor
Stravinsky and his three most famous ballets in terms of music and choreography. Since I have a
retrospective perspective, I will be able to analyze the situation ... Show more content on

His wide range of locations creates an expansive social and political influence on his works and
their choreography. Similar to many famous composers, Stravinsky did not study music from the
time he was a small child, but studied law and philosophy at St Petersburg University (Taruskin,
White). Throughout the course of his life, Stravinsky composed almost 100 works, ranging in
genres. He began to be commissioned by the Ballet Russes in 1909 and by the following year was
asked by Serge Diaghilev to produce The Firebird (Taruskin, White). The Ballet Russes was a Paris
ballet company run by Serge Diaghilev that was known for its creative and inventive performances.
Many people did not like the Ballet Russes innovative style and chose to watch classic ballet
companies instead in order to continue the classical style that many believed ballet should express.
However, Diaghilev was determined to do something unique with his ballet company and they made
their performances extremely modern (Lockspeiser). The Firebird was the work that set Stravinsky's
career on fire, and allowed his name to become spoken with respect and fame. It premiered at the
Paris Opera on June 25, 1910. It may have been fate that this commission was offered to Stravinsky
because it is said that the Ballet Russes originally commissioned another composer for this piece,
but that his slow progress forced them to offer it to

Stravinsky And Bartok 's Influence On The Modern Period
Stravinsky and Bartok's Influence in the Modern Period Moving out of the Classical (1750–1820)
and Romantic (1820–1890) period came to be the Modern period, which took place from 1890 –
1950. This period allowed for upcoming artists in this era to collaborate different styles from the
Classical and Romantic period, as seen in the patterns of the composers' pieces. The Modern Period
has many influential artists that have been respected through history. Taking a close analysis at Igor
Stravinsky, 1882 – 1971 (Yudkin, 202), and Bela Bartok, 1881 – 1945 (Yudkin, 215), by assessing
their life and music gives a deeper meaning of what it meant to live through the Modern time frame.

At the age of nine, Stravinsky started practicing Piano (Siohan, 13). Igor began being introduced to
the music scene around the age nine; he was finally allowed to attend his parents music parties
(Siohan 13). When his father starred in Glinka's Ruslan and Ludmila, young Igor visits the set
behind stage (Siohan, 14). Igor is in awe of Glinka's light transparent orchestration which is vivid
through the texture of his sound (Siohan 14). Stravinsky went through studying law, not letting it get
in the way of his main focus music; he graduated in 1905 then married his cousin Catherine
Nossenko (Siohan, 20). Igor, "enjoyed wrestling with mysterious of counterpoint" (Siohoan 15),
which explains why he created such a bond with his teacher Rimsky–Korsakov. He later established
many other compositions with and without Rimsky–korsakov such as The Rite of Spring and
Symphony B flat minor (opus I), 1907 (Siohan, 20). Bela Bartok was born in 1881, in Hungary
(Yudkin, 215). Bartok growing up in the same time period as Stravinsky took a very similar
approach to his compositions. "His work grew out of the nationalist movement of the second half of
the 19th century" (Yudkin 215), this is visible in Bartok's work. His work is mixed with a flow of
contemporary styles. Bela Bartok had three careers, the first two support the third heavily and give

Neoclassicism taken literally is new classical which can be understood as a return to the classical
style. The neoclassical idea of returning to the classics in a new style is one that moved through
several art forms starting from the scholastic community in the mid–18th century. The essence of
neoclassical was that it brought many scholars and artists back to Grecian classics which came to be
part of their classics. Music was one of the last art forms touched by the neoclassicism idea, and
even then it only occurred several decades into the 19th century. Of all the neoclassical composers,
Igor Fyodorvich Stravinsky is the one that is the most well known in the music world for his
contributions to the creation of the style. Stravinsky's ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Rimsky–Korsakov took an interest in the young Stravinsky and ended up teaching him privately in
his home. Having Nikolai as a teacher was beneficial to Stravinsky's as it helped impart to him the
idea and workings of Korsakov's Russian classic style on an intimate level. It must be said that
Nikolai was a well–known Russian composer of his time who had worked alongside Mily Balakirev,
Cesar Cui, Modest Mussorgsky, and Alexander Borodin to establish The Balakirev Circle where
they worked to create Russian Classical Music genre. One of the key points of the Russian Classical
style was that it heavily used village songs as part of their work to enrich their Russian Classical
music style. Korsakov's influence on Stravinsky is heavily reflected in his first major work titled
Symphony in E–Flat which he dedicated to his teacher. The symphony itself has many major ideas
of his teacher Russian classic style such as the first movement being in a sonata form, as well as the
second movement and finale which pays homage to Russian folk songs. This symphony with its
Russian classical characteristics is the first glimpse of Stravinsky's ability to take on a new style and
produce a musical work that showcased the essence of the particular style. Stravinsky's chance to
work at a new style came after his second major work, the Scherzo Fantastique. Sergei

Igor Stravinsky Rite Of Spring
A critique of The Rite of Spring by Igor Stravinsky and Folding by Shen Wei On November 22th, I
enjoyed the Rite of Spring and Folding at Centennial Hall in U of A. Both of them shocked me by
their unique way of performances. From the very beginning, The Rite of Spring by Igor Stravinsky
strengthens in a volatile sense of harmonious movements. The Rite of Spring is quite different from
classical ballets whose subtle interchange of the curvaceous, subjective lithesome in the flow of time
that romanticism savored. In this particular dance which was carefully planned by Igor Stravinsky,
Stravinsky's rhythms hit and batter; although highly asymmetric they are still pounded in such a new
way that the score requires innovation in harmonious representation to make Stravinsky's invention
workable. In this dance, there is no way are these rhythms presented subtly, in fact, they are
habitually stricken out in harmony by the huge orchestra that the work uses. Undeniably, one of the
most enjoyable facets of a noble performance, even without dance convention, is the way that it
looks. Their grey outfit and sporadic black tops make them a perfect blend. ... Show more content on

It was as if there was nobody and only the ghost–like dancers onstage accompanied by irregular
music terrified me. So as to concentrate on the listener's discernment on the rhythm, musical
material, Stravinsky at times reduces to tiny repetitive configurations of a simple two or three pitch.
In tandem with this rectilinear plainness, The Rite of Spring's gargantuan crunching
synchronizations move at the stride of glaciers, this gradual harmonic movement puzzlingly
magnifying the general sense of drive and energy. These structures of sound, although distressingly
dissonant for an audience in 1913, are selected with perfect modification, and they reinforce
Stravinsky's complete arc with a structural indemnity on a practically Beethovenian

Musical Modernism with Claude Debussy, Igor Stravinsky...
Musical modernism can be seen as the time where music emerges its liberty from Romantic era style
–that started in the late nineteen century to end of the Second World War– and gains new ideas and
freedom. With the political turmoil and chaos that took over the European countries, –that lured
countries into the First World War– composers and artists started to find, create more and new ways
to express themselves. They eagerly began to discover the art of Eastern countries with the hope of
finding new ways of expression. The changes in tonality, irregular rhythms, tone clusters, distressed
and antagonistic melodies, the expressionist, abstract, unusual ideas over powers the music, the

With his first piano lessons, his teachers discovered his unusual talent of 'playing out of the

skills.
At 1889, he attended the Paris International Exposition, where he discovered the wondrous colours
of Asian music that picked up his interest. He was also fascinated by the pieces composed by the
Russian composers Modest Petrovich Mussorgsky, Nikolai Rimsky–Korsakov and Alexander
Borodin, therefore he was lured in to the folk music of Russia soon after.
In later years following his graduation, after composing his 'Suite Bergamasque' for piano, he found
himself in the impressionist art movement with fellow composers –like Maurice Ravel– because of
the link French music had with the paintings of Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, Van Gogh and other
modern, like–minded artists, even though he stated that he never felt connected to the movement
with the words,
"I'm trying to write 'something else' – realities, in a manner of speaking – what imbeciles call

The Choreography of the Rite of Spring
It is a well–known fact that a large number of progressive artworks were not accepted by the
publicity at the time of their creation and it could take several decades for the society to do justice to
them. However, the ballet the Rite of Spring created by Igor Stravinsky, which is considered to be
one of the most crucial works of art in the twentieth century, as it marked the beginning of the
modernist era, caused a completely unpredictable reaction of the audience on its premiere in 1913 in
the Paris' Théâtre des Champs–Élysées. The significance of the Rite of Spring, however, is not only
the merit of Stravinsky but also of Nijinsky who deployed innovative choreography that has altered

It was influenced by the colonial practices and representations which asserted that non–Western
cultures are primitive and insufficiently developed. In addition, Paris of that period was captured by
such modern dance practices as the cakewalk, the apache, the grizzly bear, which were considered as
mass and undignified. Nevertheless, the connection between the aforementioned dance styles and
the Rite of Spring is obvious, as "the choreography for each deployed a kinetic vocabulary that
yoked together mechanisation and animal vitality ... that not only transgressed conventional
definitions of dance but also offered a physical expression of modernity as defined by, and through,
the atavistic body of the dancer" (Kennel 23). Therefore, the Rite of Spring with its unfamiliar
choreography appeared to be "primitive" to the highbrow audience of the Théâtre des Champs–
Élysées. However, it is noted that Nijinsky's choreography expressed modernity with its tensions in

His first performance of Firebird was what put Stravinsky in the musical map. Even though the
ballet went well with the public, Stravinsky knew that he still needed to improve (Huizenga). After
the success of firebird, Diaghilev wanted Stravinsky to immediately start working on another ballet.
To his surprise, Stravinsky had already started working on a piece himself. This piece would be
unveiled in Paris France in 1911 as Petrushka. Petrushka in some ways shows Stravinsky finally
reaching the musical sound he desired. According to Teachout Stravinsky's Petrushka, "Herald a
Complete change in the way musicians, and in particular creative musicians, thought about music. It
freed rhythm once and for all from old regularities, the old four–bar schemes, and allowed it to react
directly to variations in the melodic phrase"(Teachout 59). This is what Stravinsky had been
working towards all along. After his great success with Petrushka, Stravinsky started working in
what probable became his best known work Rite of spring. The concept of Rite of Spring had been
in Stravinsky's mind for a long time. He had this idea of making a ballet about the pagan sacrifices
that would occur during the beginning of spring. To show this barbaric tradition, Stravinsky
assembled an orchestra that went completely outside of the traditional tonality and intensify the
essence of dissonance (Vlad 31). Vlad says that

Although Igor Stravinsky was a Christian and Claude Debussy was a hedonistic atheist, they were
both modern classical composers. However, this was not their only similarity. They also studied
music at a college, quickly rose to fame, and composed in several different styles.
One similarity was their studies of music. They both studied music at colleges. Debussy, despite his
lack of formal schooling, went to the Paris Conservatory for eleven years, starting at the young age
of eleven. Although his experimentation with dissonance led him to trouble, he continued to use it
throughout his life. Stravinsky spent three years studying composition with Rimsky–Korsakov, a

Debussy, at the age of eighteen, was sponsored by Madame Nadejda von Meck, who was also the
patroness of Tchaikovsky. However, Madame von Meck permitted Debussy to Travel with her and
her family, unlike her arrangement with Tchaikovsky. Although this encouraged his career, it made
him have an expensive taste the rest of his life, forcing him to never be in a financially safe place.
Stravinsky achieved fame through his teacher and friend, Rimsky–Korsakov, who arranged for some
of Stravinsky's music to be played. Diaghilev, who worked for the Russian Ballet Company, heard
the music and commissioned Stravinsky to write an original ballet. Stravinsky found inspiration in
old legends, creating the The Firebird. A few years later, Stravinsky wrote one of his most famous
works, The Rite of Spring. This ballet caused a riot, partly because of the strange music, including a
very high bassoon piece, but Stravinsky put all the blame on the choreographer, Nijinsky. Despite
the controversy over his music, or perhaps because of it, Stravinsky rapidly became a known name
in the music world. Although the ways in which the two became famous were different, they both

Igor Stravinsky Nationalism
Nationalism in music refers to a musical movement originating in the 19th century. It served as a
reaction to German music which dominated the musical scene at the time. It focused particularly on
folk traditions of the composer's national heritage, as well as subjects of national life and history. It
also allowed composers such as Stravinsky to form a greater presence in the musical scene. (Curran
2016 "Nationalism in Music") The early music of Igor Stravinsky often shows nationalistic traits
that reflect his Russian upbringing and influences. In his later compositions he moves beyond this,
keeping continuity through a smooth transition in style from a Russian style of writing to a
neoclassical style. (Szabo 2011, p. 2). This can be seen by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The first is the Russian period which extends to the late 1910s. His works in this period show
nationalist traits (as evident by the name) and include works such as L'oiseau de feu (The Firebird)
(1910), Petrushka (1911) and Le sacre du printemps (The Rite of Spring) (1913). Second is the
neoclassical period which starts in the early 1920s and ends in the early 1950s. This period sees
Stravinsky move beyond nationalism in his music and includes works such as Octet for Wind
Instruments (1923), Oedipus Rex (1927) and Symphony in C (1940). The third and final period of
Stravinsky's works is the serialism period and includes works such as Canticum Sacrum (1955),
Agon (1957) and Requiem Canticles (1966) (Griffiths; Szabo 2011; Taruskin & White; Walsh). The
transition between the Russian and neoclassical period is an important time as it highlights shifts in
Stravinsky's compositional techniques and interests. Examples of the transitional works of
Stravinsky include Les Noces (The Wedding) (1917), Histoire du Soldat (The Soldier's Tale) (1918)
and Pulcinella (1920) (Szabo 2011, p. 1). While all periods of Stravinsky's works have been

The first of Igor Stravinsky's three famous early ballets, The Firebird is the most traditional and
derivative. While The Firebird, similar to Petrushka and The Rite Of Spring, is unquestionably one
of Stravinsky's masterpieces, if considered strictly historically it can be, with some justice, viewed
as warmed–over Rimsky–Korsakov (the device of contrasting a folkloristic, diatonic style

Although it was The Firebird ballet, first performed in Paris in 1910, that began his international
career, and although the orchestral suite has remained his most popular work, he was still a little
embarrassed by it years afterwards. The original "wastefully large" instrumentation he revised in
1919, when he wrote a second suite, and again in 1945, when he put together a third and longer
orchestral suite. Such critical actions, he said, "are stronger than words."
The scenario for Firebird, as adapted by Fokine, follows an old Russian folk tale. The Tsarevitch,
Prince Ivan, is hunting the elusive Firebird, and during the night he wanders into a magical garden
(Introduction). As he walks through the garden he sees the Firebird, a beautiful bird with dazzling
plumage (The Firebird and her Dance and Firebird Variation). Ivan captures the Firebird, but agrees
to let her go free, after taking one of her feathers as a trophy. At sunrise, Ivan meets thirteen
princesses, who have come into the garden to dance and play with golden apples from the garden's
orchard (Round–Dance of the Princesses). Ivan learns that the garden belongs to the evil magician–
king Kaschei, who has enchanted the princesses, and who has the ability to turn his enemies into

Igor Fyodorovich Stravinsky, or know as Igor Stravinsky, was born and grew up in Oranienbaum, a

Biography of the Works through Mavra, author Richard Taruskin writes,
"Stravinsky was born on 5 June 1882, O.S.–on which day New Style calendars in the West read 17

The bad situation was not only affects to Stravinsky's life a lots, but it also created so many changes
in Stravinsky's music style. So, he composed music with less people in an orchestra. The libretto
Histoire du Soldat (A Soldier's Tale), in 1918, is a good example for his style at this time. The
libretto just had a violin, clarinet, cornet, bassoon, double bass, trombone, percussion and three
actors who told the story; so, it didn't have a lot of people in the music.

Stravinsky and Diaghilev finished Les noces (1923), a composed they began in 1914 and completed
in 1923. Moreover, in 1925, Stravinsky composed more works about religion. In the book
Conversations with Igor Stravinsky, Stravinsky said, "The Church knew what the Psalmist knew:

The Rite of Spring Essay
When one thinks of a ballet they hear soft rhythmic notes and see elegantly dancing ballerinas softly
tip–toeing around the stage. This is also what people in early 1900's expected to see when they
planned to attend a ballet. However, a couple of motivated artists in 1913 literally planned to change
the design of ballet, music and dance forever. On May 29, 1913 a ballet named The Rite of Spring
premiered in Paris, France. The original title as it translates from Russian to French is; Le Sacre du
Printemps, meaning the rite of spring, but the literal translation from Russian to English means
"Sacred Spring". The ballet and music were composed by Igor Stravinsky, with the help of Nicholas

Unlike traditional ballet The Rite of Spring featured sharply bent arms and legs that focused on
barbarian depictions of life rather than the elegant, graceful representations used in conventional
ballet. The violent dance steps depicted fertility rites, which is what provoked the earliest
interruptions during the ballet. While Nijinsky was creating the dance for the ballet, Roerich was
creating the setting and costumes to accurately portray this sacrificial rite. The use of such primitive
pagan images were something that the people were not accustomed to. It was a topic that the world
was not yet ready to deal with. But the visuals of the ballet were not the only historic part; the music
had an even greater impact. The music was composed by Igor Stravinsky, who considered himself
an inventor of music. He was also known for many controversial works reminiscent of Nijinsky. He
created many works that blasted the whole realm of music into other possibilities, in which it would
never return from. He started his career writing music for other ballets like Firebird and Petrouchka,
which were grand and familiar like traditional ballet, but had a small hint of a more modern tone. It
was not until The Rite of Spring that Stravinsky's work was truly inspirational. This work tested the
future of the 20th century classical music, and in many ways it paved the path to a modernized view.

Igor Stravinsky Orchestra Conductors Analysis
Traditional purposes of various events and situations, including an orchestra concert, become
overshadowed by what society deems as eye–catching. As a composer, Igor Stravinsky takes it upon
himself to discuss the issue at hand. Igor Stravinsky expresses his contempt toward the source that
receives the public's attention and respect, the orchestra conductors, through his abundant use of
similes that create a despicable image of the conductors, his sarcastic diction which displays
Stravinsky's bitterness, and his metaphors that symbolize a greater meaning behind them. The
mention of politics initiates a negative or rather, a tense mood, which works to Stravinsky's
advantage in portraying his disdain as he criticizes that "conducting, like politics, rarely attracts

Orchestra conductors are criticized in the way that refers to them as a corrupt field of work and are
depreciated. Stravinsky's bitterness is shown as he blatantly compares the conductors to the concepts
and corruptions of politics. Furthermore, the issue is not only the system but also the "ego disease,
[which] is naturally high to begin with, that... grows like a tropical weed under the sun of a
pandering public," contributing to Stravinsky's purpose in exposing misplaced admiration for the
conductors (ln 14–17). Stravinsky makes a point that the conductors' personality is also to blame,
claiming the presence of greed within them. Although it is natural to have a high ego, issues are

IGOR STRAVINSKY
Igor Stravinsky is considered by many the greatest composer of the 20th Century. Several
composers have made breakthroughs and great accomplishments in the past 100 years, but
Stravinsky has dominated nearly every trend set. He was born near St. Petersburg, Russia in
Oranienbaum, on June 17, 1882. He was born to a famous Russian bass opera singer, Fyodor
Ignatyevich Stravinsky.
Igor Stravinsky was third of a family of four boys. He grew up hearing his father practicing his
opera and attending local ballets. He also started taking piano lessons when he was 9 years old and
continued on with musical notation and composition instruction. All throughout his early life he
studied music. However, although he had been brought ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

new ballet, The Firebird.
The result of his commission was the first real modern ballet. It set the example of the composer
consulting both with the choreographer and the stage/costuming artist during the composition.
For the next few years, Stravinsky and Diaghilev worked very closely together. Diaghilev
wanted all of Stravinsky's new works to be produced by his company. Stravinsky's next two works
for the ballet, Petrouchka (1910–11) and The Rite of Spring (1912–13) are perfectly crafted,
powerful pieces, drawing on Stravinsky's rhythmic and harmonic imagination. The most amazing
part is that Stravinsky had not even reached middle age at the time he composed these pieces. The
Rite of Spring created a violent reaction because no one had ever heard music that carried this much
premature power. It was almost as though there was a sense of jealousy from his colleagues. The
entire musical establishment criticized stravinsky, but he didn't really seem to care.
During World War I, Stravinsky lived in Switzerland. There he concentrated on smaller–
scale chamber pieces, piano works, and songs. One of these, The Soldier's Tale,

Igor Stravinsky Analysis
Conductors in the music industry are considered to be the leaders of the orchestra during
performances. A man of great renown in the world of music himself, Igor Stravinsky was best
known for orchestrating many of his own works, according to biography.com. In an essay written by
Stravinsky, he asserts his own opinions and point of view on conductors in orchestras. Stravinsky
conveys his point of view by utilizing repetition and tone, and appealing to Logos. In Stravinsky's
argument, he repeated phrases multiple times in his essay to provide emphasis to his point of view.
For example, "He soon becomes a 'great' conductor... 'titan of the podium'"(Stravinsky), "'Great'
conductors, like 'great' actors"(Stravinsky), and "The cult of the 'great' ... Show more content on

First, he began his argument by comparing conductors to politicians, such as "Conducting, like
politics, rarely attracts original minds, and the field is more for the making of careers and the
exploitation of personalities–another resemblance to politics–than a profession for the application of
exact and standardized discipline"(Stravinsky). Then, Stravinsky indicated the conductor's actions
were because of his ego through "In such people[conductors] the incidence of ego disease is
naturally high to begin with"(Stravinsky) and "The conductor is encouraged to impose a purely
egotistical... authority... accorded a position out of all proportion to his real value in the musical, as
opposed to music business, community"(Stravinsky). Lastly, he ended his argument by asserting the
role the audience played within the orchestra in "If you are incapable of listening, the conductor will
show you what to feel"(Stravinsky). The evidences together convey how Stravinsky structured his
argument by exposing a conductor's true capability, condemning their personality within the actual
musical performance, and asserting the audience is practically orchestrated by conductors
themselves. His structure focuses on criticizing the actions of a conductor in three different
approaches, each of which convey his own point of

Rite of Spring vs. Les Demoiselles d'Avignon
Igor Stravinsky and Pablo Picasso were the two major artists who created their most well–known
artworks in the 18th century. Stravinsky created the Rite of Spring, a musical work that focused on
ballet. On the other hand, Picasso painted the Les Demoiselles d'Avignon, which "became the most
famous example of cubism painting," (Pablopicasso.org). Despite the fact that the Rite of Spring and
Les Demoiselles d'Avignon are two different works, they share a few similarities for a number of
reasons.
First of all, the Rite of Spring and Les Demoiselles d'Avignon were created in an abstract style and
also out of the ordinary. The music in the Rite of Spring was "angular, dissonant, and totally

According to NPR online, Harvard University professor Thomas Kelly suggests that "one of the
reasons that the Paris premiere of 'The Rite of Spring' created such a furor is that it shattered
everyone's expectation," (NPR Online). For example, "the evening's program began innocently with
a performance of 'Les Sylphides'. However, as the follow–up piece, it turned out to be anything but
spring–like. One of the dancers recalled that Vaslav Nijinsky's shocking choreography was
physically unnatural to perform," (NPR Online). Picasso's Les Demoiselles d'Avignon received
"unanimous shock, distaste, and outrage by a group of painters, patrons, and art critics," (PBS). In
addition, "the painter Matisse is angered by the work, which he considers a hoax, an attempt to pain
the fourth dimension," (PBS). The critic Salmon wrote, "It was the ugliness of the faces that froze
with horror the half–converted," (PBS). Painter Derain also made a rude, inhumane comment stating
that, "One day we shall find Pablo has hanged himself behind his great canvas," (PBS). These
unpleasant comments, however, did not prevent Stravinsky and Picasso's works from being
displayed in theaters, textbooks, and art

Summary Of Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker And Stravinsky
Tchaikovsky's "The Nutcracker" and Stravinsky's "Rite of Spring " are two of the most influential
ballets to ever be recorded. Their ballets have been played and duplicated for many years. I will start
this paper with a summary of each composer which will include where they are from culturally,
geographically and musically. Then I talk about each ballet. Where it was written, the story behind
each piece, and its reception now and its reception at the time it was published. I will also include
the popularity of each ballet in other forms such as Disney. Finally, I will provide a detailed concert
report of each ballet.
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky was born April 25, 1840, in Votkinsk, Russia. Tchaikovsky was the second
of six born children. He started composing when he was four years old. When he was in his teens his
mother died. It was at this point that his dad realized that his son had a talent in music. So he sent
him off to St. Petersburg Conservatory. After graduating from there he moved to Moscow to teach
music theory at the Russian Musical Society. He did not really like teaching, however, he developed
a relationship with Nikolay Rubinstein and this is where he started composing symphonies. In his
mid–years of his life, he traveled Europe showing off all his beautiful pieces of music. He even

Music In Igor Stravinsky's The Rite Of Spring
Igor Stravinsky's ballet The Rite of Spring is a representation of his Russian roots and everything
that he and his culture celebrated. Stravinsky managed to bring an earthy and wild tone to an
orchestra that audiences were used to being so elegant and high class. The symbol of spring to the
Russian culture represents their new year with the revival of the crops and unity that was crucial to
living. Embodying the gathering of people with their relationship with the Earth, Stravinsky brought
music back to the origins of dance.
Born on June 17, 1882 in Oranienbaum, Russia, Igor Stravinsky was raised in St. Petersburg by his
father and mother. The family already with a musical background, Stravinsky did not want to pursue
the same career as his father and mother. While attending the University of St. Petersburg,
Stravinsky met the son of the composer Nikolai Rimsky–Korsakov who changed his mind from
studying law to become a music composer. After the arrival of the first World War, Stravinsky, along
with his wife and children, fled from Russia. Stravinsky then proceeded to travel the world with his
music, moving to France with his family in 1920. Though Stravinsky moved from New York City to

Parisian culture was diffused from Russia. During his time in back in Russia, Igor Stravinsky spent a

Igor Stravinsky Rite Of Spring Essay
Igor Stravinsky's piece the Rite of Spring is probably one of the well–known pieces during the 20th
century. Igor Stravinsky really changed the way music was during the 20th century with his very
popular piece the Rite of Spring. In the beginning of Stravinsky's piece the Rite of Spring the
rhythm is somewhat fast. The tempo of the piece changes throughout the piece. At times the piece
can have an average pace and then pick up to a fast tempo again. There is no clear solid rhythm to
the piece because the tempo changes throughout the entire piece. The melody of this piece for the
most part is very disjointed and jumpy. Throughout the entirety of the piece it is harsh sounding, but

multiple melodies being played at the same time. In some aspects of the piece it can be considered
homophonic, but the piece is mostly polyphonic. The piece has very high complexity in terms of
texture and structure. For the duration of this piece a large amount of instruments were used. Some
of these instruments include bassoon flutes, flutes, horns, trumpets, trombones, tubs, strings, drums,
and even a triangle. So the amount of instruments used in this piece is very abundant, which would
entail an orchestra. A lot of the meter ranges in this piece can be very different. But a lot of what you
can hear is a 4/4 meter and either a 2/4 meter. Throughout this piece it is hard to determine the
piece's main meter because it is constantly changing. The form of this piece is sort of the same way.
It is hard to determine the form of this piece, but it can be considered binary form. It is binary
because of the contrast within the piece. The genre of this piece is that of a ballet. This piece also is

Neoclassicism Vs. Modernism Essay
Igor Stravinsky makes for a first–class example of differences and similarities between
neoclassicism and modernism. Modernism is defined as "A term used in music to denote a multi–

neoclassicism may be defined as "A movement of style in the works of certain 20th–century
composers, who, particularly during the period between the two world wars, revived the balanced
forms and clearly perceptible thematic processes of earlier styles to replace what were, to them, the
increasingly exaggerated gestures and formlessness of late Romanticism"2 By not only comparing

In addition to asymmetrical rhythms the use of polytonality is vibrant throughout the piece
especially in the introduction which begins with different clarinets playing polytonal. Stravinsky
structured The Rite very differently, melody was not the only dominant feature of the piece, other
features such as the fore mentioned polytonality and asymmetrical rhythms were also at the
dominant features of the piece. By breaking from many common practices of his own and of the
time, Stravinsky created a piece slated in modernism's history. While The Rite was a piece of
modernist material, Stravinsky later moved on to neoclassicism, Pulcinella greatly represents a small
portion of Stravinsky's neoclassical repertoire. Like Stravinsky his contemporary in another art form
was Pablo Picasso, interestingly enough he played a huge part in the design of the visuals in
Pulcinella. Both emphasize or accentuate certain features within their works. Where Stravinsky may
accentuate his neoclassical works with features from his predecessors, Picasso accentuates his art
with his perceptions, such as his Stravinsky portrait that cast's Stravinsky with a very large body, a
small head but a rather large nose. Both emphasized certain themes within their works of art.

Igor Stravinsky
In the passage by Igor Stravinsky, he uses not only comparison and contrast, but also language to
convey his point of view about the conductors of the time and their extreme egotism. Stravinsky
believes that conductors exploit the music for their own personal gain, so rather, he looks on them in
a negative light.
To show his aggravation and irritation, Stravinsky uses the rhetorical device of comparison and
contrast to convey his opinion of conductors. He compares the "great" conductors to "great" actors
in that "[they] are unable to play anything but themselves". Moreover, being unable to adapt, they
have to adapt the work to themselves, not themselves to the work, which is obviously offending to a

This contrasts the motives of the composer and the conductor, which should be to keep the integrity
of the piece of music, but as mentioned above, Stravinsky believes that the conductor's are usually
for personal gain.
The negative point of view that Stravinsky has for the conductors is also revealed through the use of
language, literal and figurative language. Stravinsky uses both literal and figurative language
because they have the power to portray reality. In this piece, the word "great" is used sarcastically to
show the contrast between what the conductors think of themselves and what he thinks of them.
They both are reality, but reality to two different people, so using "great" in a sarcastic manner
allows for both Stravinsky's and the conductors' interpretations of reality. In this case, the denotation
and the connotation are different, making them important. Here the denotation of the word "great" is
wonderful, majestic, and important, while the connotation is the exact opposite, ignoble,
insignificant, and inferior. Literal language tells the apparent truth, while figurative language tells
the apparent truth it also tells the indirect truth, making language important in this piece.
In conclusion, Stravinsky airs his annoyance and irritation of

Greatest Composers in History: Igor Stravinsky
What gives the artist real prestige is his imitators (Igor Stravinsky). Based on that measurement of
admiration, Igor Stravinsky earned a place among some of the greatest composers in history.
Emerging as a leader of the 20th century classical music, he influenced many of his contemporaries
as well as future composers. His life, music, and religion defined Stravinsky. Born on June 17, 1882,
Igor Stravinsky grew up in Orianenbaum, a resort town off the coast of Finland. His parents loved
music and ignited a passion for the fine arts in him at a young age. However, they pushed him to
enroll into law school and he agreed. Rimsky– Korsakov's youngest son also attended the university
and soon the two men grew to be close friends. Rimsky– Korsakov mentored him. After graduating
from law school, he wrote the composition, Fireworks, and sent it to Korsakov. Unfortunately, his
mentor never received the package due to sudden death. Loyal, even after death, Korsakov arranged
to have Stravinksy's pieces used for a performance. This gave him the opportunity to enter into the
world of music. Upon the request of a patron, he created the ballet, The Firebird, and it opened in
Paris in 1910. Audiences loved it and his popularity skyrocketed. Then in 1911, he wrote
Petrouchka, and following that, The Rite of Spring in 1913. The latter caused controversy because
of its departure from Romantic music with its erratic sounds and noises. Yet, by a year later, people
accepted it and it became a

The Rite Of Spring
The Rite of Spring" is a ballet by Pina Bausch. The original production was choreographed by
Vaslav Nijinsky and premiered in 1913. The music, by Igor Stravinsky, is written about a pagan
sacrificial ritual. Pina Bausch's interpretation of this music through dance emphasizes different
gender roles (Savarino, 15). Through dance and the intertwined theme of the ritual sacrifice of a
young woman, Pina Bauch's choreography portrays the self–sacrificial path that women are forced
to follow in traditional societies through both desperate and unpretentious movements that are both
original and pay tribute to the initial choreography by Nijinsky.
"The Rite of Spring" first premiered as a ballet set in Pagan Russia. In its first version, by Vaslav
Nijinsky, the ballet caused rioting and controversy in the theater when it premiered in Paris in 1913.
The music, by Igor Stravinsky, is intense and uncommonly powerful. The audience was so shocked
by the discordant melodies and the pounding, turned–in choreography that was performed on stage
that they began to shout during the performance (Hensher, "The Rite of Spring– a rude awakening).

Musical Conductors In Igor Stravinsky
Musical conductors are individuals that help direct a musical performance. They will ensure that the
band is in the right tempo and that each section of the ensemble enters the performance at the correct
time. The conductors may use hand gestures or a baton in order to guide the band. Many people
believe that musical conductors are beneficial and help improve a band's performance. However,
Russian composer Igor Stravinsky disapproves of the usage of musical conductors as he believes
that they are useless. Through comparisons and sarcastic language, Stravinsky criticizes the
egotistical personalities and deceitful nature of musical conductors.
Stravinsky addresses the artificiality of conductors through comparisons. In the introduction of the
passage, Stravinsky highlights the similarities between conducting and politics. He explains that
both conducting and politics "rarely attracts original minds " and are mostly used for the
"exploitation of personalities" Politicians are known for being very dishonest. They often make
empty promises in order to gain popularity and votes from the public. Stravinsky believes that
conductors, like politicians, exist only to satisfy their audience, not to express their own perspective
of the music. At one point, Stravinsky draws a comparison between anglers and musicians. While a
conductor might be a "incomplete musician", Stravinsky believes that a conductor must be a
"compleat angler". Angler is another term to used to describe someone who

Igor Stravinsky, a Russian Composer
Igor Stravinsky is known as one of the most important and influential composers of the twentieth
century. Igor was born in Lomonosow, Russia on June 17, 1882 to Anna Kholodovsky and Fyodor
Stravinsky. When Stravinsky was only three he witnessed a musician at a Russian fair singing,
clicking his tongue, and making armpit noises. Igor was so excited to go try it at home. This was one
of Stravinsky's first memory of music. Igor's childhood was not a good memory for him. He felt
hated and neglected. Igor recalled that his schooldays no one had real attraction for him and he was
always lonely. The only thing that got him through it was music and his piano lessons. In 1890, Igor
heard his first orchestral performance "The Sleeping Beauty." He was awestruck at the grace of the
piece. That performance fueled his interest in music even more. When he was fifteen, he had
mastered Mendelssohn's Piano Concerto in G minor. Stravinsky also finished a piano reduction of a
string quartet by Glazunov, who allegedly thought that Igor was unmusical and considered him to
have poor skills. His parents saw how much he loved music but didn't want him to pursue it as a job.
They enrolled him in the University of Saint Petersburg in 1901. Stravinsky was told to become a
lawyer. Vladimir Rimsky–Korsakov, son of composer Nikolai Rimsky–Korakove, was a fellow

World War I and the Russian Revolution were the main events that caused these changes. Stravinsky
was forced to leave his homeland and he chose to move to Switzerland with his family and live a
nomadic life. They settled by Lake Geneva, where his two youngest children were born, Soulima, in
1910, and Milene, in 1914. Moreover, being away from his homeland, Stravinsky felt the desire to
work on Russian folk themes and the two most important works were the Wedding (Les Noces) and
Fox (Renard). The Wedding was finally completed in 1923 after a lot of editing and a long process
of instrumentation and the dance scenes with the music described a Russian peasant wedding. There
were also more pieces that were describing Russian tradition such as The Cat's Lullaby (Berceuses
du chat). Furthermore, a benefit in Stravinsky's life during these historical changes was that he made
new friends, which they played a very important role in his life. He was very close with the
conductor Ernest Ansermet, the painters Rene Auberjonois, Jean Morax, Alexander Cingria, and the

His father the leading Russian operatic basses. It took Stravinsky a rather long time to discover his
musical abilities because his parents wanted him to be a lawyer and not follow in their footsteps.
Stravinsky got a chance to show Rimsky–Korsakov some of his music he wrote because he attended
law school with his son. Rimsky–Korsakov was really impressed and decided to take him as a
private pupil. Rimsky–Korsakov used some of Stravinsky's pieces to present in front of classes and
used it in "The Symphony of E flat major." When Rimsky–Korsakov

Stravinsky was born in Russia in 1882. His music influences came mainly from his father who was a
famous operatic baritone and a bibliophile. Igor Stravinsky himself never went to the
conservatorium and his first composition lessons were with Vladimir Rimsky–Korsakov.
Consequently, Stravinsky developed his own idiosyncratic taste in music. During his early and
middle compositional years, Serge Diaghilev arranged for Stravinsky's pieces such as the Rite of
Spring to be premièred and performed in Paris (Druskin and Cooper, 1983). That was the point in
time where Stravinsky started to be thought of as a nationalist composer because in Paris he sounded
very exotic (Walsh, 2017). However, his style did not remain static throughout his life. During

Igor Stravinsky
Igor Stravinsky (1882–1971) is one of the most prominent and well–known composers of the
twentieth century. A Russian composer, pianist, and conductor, Stravinsky quickly rose to
international fame with his ballets, The Firebird (1910), Petrushka (1911), and Rite of Spring
(1913). These ballets were tonally and rhythmically complex, giving Stravinsky a reputation of
pushing musical boundaries. A master of stylistic diversity and having composed in a range of
genres, Stravinsky's works can be divided into three major periods: his Russian period (1907–1919),
his Neoclassical period (1920–1954), and his Serial period (1954–1968). His Neoclassical period
was the longest of the three and the most significant. Neoclassicism was a twentieth–century ...

As the title reveals, this 20–25–minute work is made up of of three movements: Mvt. I: Overture;
Allegro, Andante; Mvt. II: Interlude Andante; Interlude: L'istesso tempo, and Mvt. III: Con moto.
Referred to as his 'war symphony' by Stravinsky himself, this symphony was composed in response
to the Second World War. While it was composed during his neoclassical period, this work
challenges the norms of neoclassicism in ways that his other pieces composed during this era do not.
This paper will argue that Stravinsky's Symphony in Three Movements, while not one of his better
known pieces, is still a work that is representative of his life and style as a composer. Through in–
depth study of historical and analytical sources, it will look at how this work is a mixture of material
and styles from Stravinsky's works as well as from works of other composers. We will explore
Stravinsky's role in the neoclassical period, and how this symphony follows the general rules of
neoclassicism while also involving more abstract and strange compositional ideas that are not
neoclassical in nature. We will look at the different life and world events that influenced this work,
and how this work influenced his later compositions, such as The Rake's Progress. Primary sources
will be used to better understand Stravinsky's thoughts and motivations for this

Igor Stravinsky Controversy
"The Rite of Spring" was certainly the most controversial piece of orchestral music. The piece,
composed by Russian Composer Igor Stravinsky, included lots of uncommon musical elements. But
was it really that uncommon? The world–changing ballet was so controversial when it debuted in
1913, because it completely contradicted the common rhythmic and harmonic languages of most of
the music of the time. Stravinsky's music, however, was based off early classical music and other
compositions written before, where these composers were also accused of composing controversial
music, plus Stravinsky's early life experiences impacted his music. "Le Sacre du Printemps" (The
original name) was one of the most controversial ballets in history. The 33–minute ... Show more

Johann Sebastian Bach also wrote lots of controversial music. Some of his keyboard words included
"bended" notes to resemble a specific string or woodwind technique. This was executed as too
chromatic and dissonant to most people and the church. At the time, this was uncommon and
unaccepted from a baroque composer, but clearly it wasn't thought of so bad for a while because
Bach's death marked the end of the Baroque era. Beethoven broke many rules too. His ninth
symphony which was premiered in 1824 was nowhere near as unconventional of The Rite of Spring,
however, at the time of Beethoven, writing a symphony that was over an hour long, included a full
chorus and vocal soloists, and was expressive and romantic as it was, was in fact unconventional for
his time. Beethoven's music was so rebelliously emotional, the last seven years of his life marked
the beginning of the Romantic era. This meant that Beethoven's music was so influential and unique
he started the world's brand new "norm" of music in 1820, when the Romantic Era started.
Stravinsky's composition took place at the end of the romantic era and went into the 20th century
era. It is not coincidental that these composers who were shunned at the time ended up being so
revolutionary and influential that a new musical age

  • 1. All Art, Including Music, Is Directly Influenced By The All art, including music, is directly influenced by the environment in which the artist lives. It is impossible to create art in a vacuum, unaffected by the society and events surrounding you. The time period, location, and social changes and innovations can have a direct effect on the art produced. Political events, especially wars, can have a strong influence on the music and art produced at that time. For example, music may become more patriotic during a time of war as the composers strive to publicize their national pride. I will explore this idea through the composer Igor Stravinsky and his three most famous ballets in terms of music and choreography. Since I have a retrospective perspective, I will be able to analyze the situation ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... His wide range of locations creates an expansive social and political influence on his works and their choreography. Similar to many famous composers, Stravinsky did not study music from the time he was a small child, but studied law and philosophy at St Petersburg University (Taruskin, White). Throughout the course of his life, Stravinsky composed almost 100 works, ranging in genres. He began to be commissioned by the Ballet Russes in 1909 and by the following year was asked by Serge Diaghilev to produce The Firebird (Taruskin, White). The Ballet Russes was a Paris ballet company run by Serge Diaghilev that was known for its creative and inventive performances. Many people did not like the Ballet Russes innovative style and chose to watch classic ballet companies instead in order to continue the classical style that many believed ballet should express. However, Diaghilev was determined to do something unique with his ballet company and they made their performances extremely modern (Lockspeiser). The Firebird was the work that set Stravinsky's career on fire, and allowed his name to become spoken with respect and fame. It premiered at the Paris Opera on June 25, 1910. It may have been fate that this commission was offered to Stravinsky because it is said that the Ballet Russes originally commissioned another composer for this piece, but that his slow progress forced them to offer it to ... Stravinsky And Bartok 's Influence On The Modern Period Stravinsky and Bartok's Influence in the Modern Period Moving out of the Classical (1750–1820) and Romantic (1820–1890) period came to be the Modern period, which took place from 1890 – 1950. This period allowed for upcoming artists in this era to collaborate different styles from the Classical and Romantic period, as seen in the patterns of the composers' pieces. The Modern Period has many influential artists that have been respected through history. Taking a close analysis at Igor Stravinsky, 1882 – 1971 (Yudkin, 202), and Bela Bartok, 1881 – 1945 (Yudkin, 215), by assessing their life and music gives a deeper meaning of what it meant to live through the Modern time frame. During the life of both of these composers the world went ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... At the age of nine, Stravinsky started practicing Piano (Siohan, 13). Igor began being introduced to the music scene around the age nine; he was finally allowed to attend his parents music parties (Siohan 13). When his father starred in Glinka's Ruslan and Ludmila, young Igor visits the set behind stage (Siohan, 14). Igor is in awe of Glinka's light transparent orchestration which is vivid through the texture of his sound (Siohan 14). Stravinsky went through studying law, not letting it get in the way of his main focus music; he graduated in 1905 then married his cousin Catherine Nossenko (Siohan, 20). Igor, "enjoyed wrestling with mysterious of counterpoint" (Siohoan 15), which explains why he created such a bond with his teacher Rimsky–Korsakov. He later established many other compositions with and without Rimsky–korsakov such as The Rite of Spring and Symphony B flat minor (opus I), 1907 (Siohan, 20). Bela Bartok was born in 1881, in Hungary (Yudkin, 215). Bartok growing up in the same time period as Stravinsky took a very similar approach to his compositions. "His work grew out of the nationalist movement of the second half of the 19th century" (Yudkin 215), this is visible in Bartok's work. His work is mixed with a flow of contemporary styles. • 5. Composer, Igor Fyodorvich Stravinsky Neoclassicism taken literally is new classical which can be understood as a return to the classical style. The neoclassical idea of returning to the classics in a new style is one that moved through several art forms starting from the scholastic community in the mid–18th century. The essence of neoclassical was that it brought many scholars and artists back to Grecian classics which came to be part of their classics. Music was one of the last art forms touched by the neoclassicism idea, and even then it only occurred several decades into the 19th century. Of all the neoclassical composers, Igor Fyodorvich Stravinsky is the one that is the most well known in the music world for his contributions to the creation of the style. Stravinsky's ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Rimsky–Korsakov took an interest in the young Stravinsky and ended up teaching him privately in his home. Having Nikolai as a teacher was beneficial to Stravinsky's as it helped impart to him the idea and workings of Korsakov's Russian classic style on an intimate level. It must be said that Nikolai was a well–known Russian composer of his time who had worked alongside Mily Balakirev, Cesar Cui, Modest Mussorgsky, and Alexander Borodin to establish The Balakirev Circle where they worked to create Russian Classical Music genre. One of the key points of the Russian Classical style was that it heavily used village songs as part of their work to enrich their Russian Classical music style. Korsakov's influence on Stravinsky is heavily reflected in his first major work titled Symphony in E–Flat which he dedicated to his teacher. The symphony itself has many major ideas of his teacher Russian classic style such as the first movement being in a sonata form, as well as the second movement and finale which pays homage to Russian folk songs. This symphony with its Russian classical characteristics is the first glimpse of Stravinsky's ability to take on a new style and produce a musical work that showcased the essence of the particular style. Stravinsky's chance to work at a new style came after his second major work, the Scherzo Fantastique. Sergei ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Igor Stravinsky Rite Of Spring A critique of The Rite of Spring by Igor Stravinsky and Folding by Shen Wei On November 22th, I enjoyed the Rite of Spring and Folding at Centennial Hall in U of A. Both of them shocked me by their unique way of performances. From the very beginning, The Rite of Spring by Igor Stravinsky strengthens in a volatile sense of harmonious movements. The Rite of Spring is quite different from classical ballets whose subtle interchange of the curvaceous, subjective lithesome in the flow of time that romanticism savored. In this particular dance which was carefully planned by Igor Stravinsky, Stravinsky's rhythms hit and batter; although highly asymmetric they are still pounded in such a new way that the score requires innovation in harmonious representation to make Stravinsky's invention workable. In this dance, there is no way are these rhythms presented subtly, in fact, they are habitually stricken out in harmony by the huge orchestra that the work uses. Undeniably, one of the most enjoyable facets of a noble performance, even without dance convention, is the way that it looks. Their grey outfit and sporadic black tops make them a perfect blend. ... So as to concentrate on the listener's discernment on the rhythm, musical material, Stravinsky at times reduces to tiny repetitive configurations of a simple two or three pitch. In tandem with this rectilinear plainness, The Rite of Spring's gargantuan crunching synchronizations move at the stride of glaciers, this gradual harmonic movement puzzlingly magnifying the general sense of drive and energy. These structures of sound, although distressingly dissonant for an audience in 1913, are selected with perfect modification, and they reinforce Stravinsky's complete arc with a structural indemnity on a practically Beethovenian ... • 9. Musical Modernism with Claude Debussy, Igor Stravinsky... Musical modernism can be seen as the time where music emerges its liberty from Romantic era style –that started in the late nineteen century to end of the Second World War– and gains new ideas and freedom. With the political turmoil and chaos that took over the European countries, –that lured countries into the First World War– composers and artists started to find, create more and new ways to express themselves. They eagerly began to discover the art of Eastern countries with the hope of finding new ways of expression. Unlike traditional ballet The Rite of Spring featured sharply bent arms and legs that focused on barbarian depictions of life rather than the elegant, graceful representations used in conventional ballet. The violent dance steps depicted fertility rites, which is what provoked the earliest interruptions during the ballet. While Nijinsky was creating the dance for the ballet, Roerich was creating the setting and costumes to accurately portray this sacrificial rite. The use of such primitive pagan images were something that the people were not accustomed to. It was a topic that the world was not yet ready to deal with. But the visuals of the ballet were not the only historic part; the music had an even greater impact. The music was composed by Igor Stravinsky, who considered himself an inventor of music. He was also known for many controversial works reminiscent of Nijinsky. He created many works that blasted the whole realm of music into other possibilities, in which it would never return from. He started his career writing music for other ballets like Firebird and Petrouchka, which were grand and familiar like traditional ballet, but had a small hint of a more modern tone. At times the piece can have an average pace and then pick up to a fast tempo again. There is no clear solid rhythm to the piece because the tempo changes throughout the entire piece. The melody of this piece for the most part is very disjointed and jumpy. Throughout the entirety of the piece it is harsh sounding, but there are moments in the piece where it is smooth sounding. • 47. Neoclassicism Vs. Modernism Essay Igor Stravinsky makes for a first–class example of differences and similarities between neoclassicism and modernism. Modernism is defined as "A term used in music to denote a multi– faceted but distinct and continuous tradition within 20th–century composition"1, while neoclassicism may be defined as "A movement of style in the works of certain 20th–century composers, who, particularly during the period between the two world wars, revived the balanced forms and clearly perceptible thematic processes of earlier styles to replace what were, to them, the increasingly exaggerated gestures and formlessness of late Romanticism"2 By not only comparing his works to others but within his own body of work the two movements can be better ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In addition to asymmetrical rhythms the use of polytonality is vibrant throughout the piece especially in the introduction which begins with different clarinets playing polytonal. Stravinsky structured The Rite very differently, melody was not the only dominant feature of the piece, other features such as the fore mentioned polytonality and asymmetrical rhythms were also at the dominant features of the piece. By breaking from many common practices of his own and of the time, Stravinsky created a piece slated in modernism's history. While The Rite was a piece of modernist material, Stravinsky later moved on to neoclassicism, Pulcinella greatly represents a small portion of Stravinsky's neoclassical repertoire. Like Stravinsky his contemporary in another art form was Pablo Picasso, interestingly enough he played a huge part in the design of the visuals in Pulcinella. Both emphasize or accentuate certain features within their works. Where Stravinsky may accentuate his neoclassical works with features from his predecessors, Picasso accentuates his art with his perceptions, such as his Stravinsky portrait that cast's Stravinsky with a very large body, a small head but a rather large nose. Igor Stravinsky Essay Igor Stravinsky In the passage by Igor Stravinsky, he uses not only comparison and contrast, but also language to convey his point of view about the conductors of the time and their extreme egotism. Stravinsky believes that conductors exploit the music for their own personal gain, so rather, he looks on them in a negative light. To show his aggravation and irritation, Stravinsky uses the rhetorical device of comparison and contrast to convey his opinion of conductors. He compares the "great" conductors to "great" actors in that "[they] are unable to play anything but themselves". Moreover, being unable to adapt, they have to adapt the work to themselves, not themselves to the work, which is obviously offending to a notable composer ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This contrasts the motives of the composer and the conductor, which should be to keep the integrity of the piece of music, but as mentioned above, Stravinsky believes that the conductor's are usually for personal gain. The negative point of view that Stravinsky has for the conductors is also revealed through the use of language, literal and figurative language. Stravinsky uses both literal and figurative language because they have the power to portray reality. In this piece, the word "great" is used sarcastically to show the contrast between what the conductors think of themselves and what he thinks of them. They both are reality, but reality to two different people, so using "great" in a sarcastic manner allows for both Stravinsky's and the conductors' interpretations of reality. In this case, the denotation and the connotation are different, making them important. Here the denotation of the word "great" is wonderful, majestic, and important, while the connotation is the exact opposite, ignoble, insignificant, and inferior. Literal language tells the apparent truth, while figurative language tells the apparent truth it also tells the indirect truth, making language important in this piece. This gave him the opportunity to enter into the world of music. Upon the request of a patron, he created the ballet, The Firebird, and it opened in Paris in 1910. Audiences loved it and his popularity skyrocketed. Then in 1911, he wrote Petrouchka, and following that, The Rite of Spring in 1913. • 61. The Rite Of Spring The Rite of Spring" is a ballet by Pina Bausch. The original production was choreographed by Vaslav Nijinsky and premiered in 1913. The music, by Igor Stravinsky, is written about a pagan sacrificial ritual. Pina Bausch's interpretation of this music through dance emphasizes different gender roles (Savarino, 15). Through dance and the intertwined theme of the ritual sacrifice of a young woman, Pina Bauch's choreography portrays the self–sacrificial path that women are forced to follow in traditional societies through both desperate and unpretentious movements that are both original and pay tribute to the initial choreography by Nijinsky. "The Rite of Spring" first premiered as a ballet set in Pagan Russia. In its first version, by Vaslav Nijinsky, the ballet caused rioting and controversy in the theater when it premiered in Paris in 1913. • 63. Musical Conductors In Igor Stravinsky Musical conductors are individuals that help direct a musical performance. They will ensure that the band is in the right tempo and that each section of the ensemble enters the performance at the correct time. The conductors may use hand gestures or a baton in order to guide the band. Many people believe that musical conductors are beneficial and help improve a band's performance. However, Russian composer Igor Stravinsky disapproves of the usage of musical conductors as he believes that they are useless. Through comparisons and sarcastic language, Stravinsky criticizes the egotistical personalities and deceitful nature of musical conductors. Stravinsky addresses the artificiality of conductors through comparisons. In the introduction of the passage, Stravinsky highlights the similarities between conducting and politics. He explains that both conducting and politics "rarely attracts original minds " and are mostly used for the "exploitation of personalities" Politicians are known for being very dishonest. They often make empty promises in order to gain popularity and votes from the public. Stravinsky believes that conductors, like politicians, exist only to satisfy their audience, not to express their own perspective of the music. Igor was born in Lomonosow, Russia on June 17, 1882 to Anna Kholodovsky and Fyodor Stravinsky. When Stravinsky was only three he witnessed a musician at a Russian fair singing, clicking his tongue, and making armpit noises. Igor was so excited to go try it at home. This was one of Stravinsky's first memory of music. Igor's childhood was not a good memory for him. He felt hated and neglected. Igor recalled that his schooldays no one had real attraction for him and he was always lonely. The only thing that got him through it was music and his piano lessons. In 1890, Igor heard his first orchestral performance "The Sleeping Beauty." He was awestruck at the grace of the piece. That performance fueled his interest in music even more. When he was fifteen, he had mastered Mendelssohn's Piano Concerto in G minor. Stravinsky also finished a piano reduction of a string quartet by Glazunov, who allegedly thought that Igor was unmusical and considered him to have poor skills. His parents saw how much he loved music but didn't want him to pursue it as a job. They enrolled him in the University of Saint Petersburg in 1901. Stravinsky was told to become a lawyer. Stravinsky was forced to leave his homeland and he chose to move to Switzerland with his family and live a nomadic life. They settled by Lake Geneva, where his two youngest children were born, Soulima, in 1910, and Milene, in 1914. Moreover, being away from his homeland, Stravinsky felt the desire to work on Russian folk themes and the two most important works were the Wedding (Les Noces) and Fox (Renard). The Wedding was finally completed in 1923 after a lot of editing and a long process of instrumentation and the dance scenes with the music described a Russian peasant wedding. There were also more pieces that were describing Russian tradition such as The Cat's Lullaby (Berceuses du chat). Furthermore, a benefit in Stravinsky's life during these historical changes was that he made new friends, which they played a very important role in his life. He was very close with the conductor Ernest Ansermet, the painters Rene Auberjonois, Jean Morax, Alexander Cingria, and the writer Ramuz. This fact is also proved on the sources from Oxford Music Online, where it says: " Here Stravinsky became friendly with a group of Swiss– French writers and artists dedicated to a specifically vaudois, locale– conscious art that would be, in Louis Lavanchy's words..." Beethoven broke many rules too. His ninth symphony which was premiered in 1824 was nowhere near as unconventional of The Rite of Spring, however, at the time of Beethoven, writing a symphony that was over an hour long, included a full chorus and vocal soloists, and was expressive and romantic as it was, was in fact unconventional for his time.
