Visual Resources positions and job descriptions are constantly evolving. This means that many of us are being asked to do things that are outside of our comfort zone or area of expertise. Last year I was asked to create an area for audio and video recording to support digital storytelling initiatives on campus. Despite repeatedly pointing out that I had no experience working with A/V equipment, it became clear I would be moving forward with this project.
In the Fall of 2013 the Digital Media Lab (DML) opened its doors. Not only has it been popular with students and faculty, we have even started to circulate a small collection of cameras and audio equipment. Although, I have learned a bit about A/V equipment, I am by no means an expert and do not intend to become one.
This presentation will focus on the DML & Equipment Loan Project and how it evolved. I needed to create partnerships with people in the library and the UMBC community who could help fill in my knowledge gaps and who ultimately became the main promoters of the project. As the project moved forward it became especially important to manage faculty expectations and to keep the project do-able and reasonable.
I would also like to solicit feedback from colleagues who find themselves in similar positions. There are many different ways I could take this project and I would be interested to hear what other institutions are doing with regard to A/V support for the communities they serve.

eLearning and Networking Technologies to Mimic the In-Person Experience
Conducting an online graduate-level course poses many technological challenges that aren’t often experienced in e-Learning, which typically involves undergraduate-level students watching slideshow presentations. Not only were the students of Theory and Practice of Collaborative Fisheries Research course expected to view lectures synchronously, they were expected to verbally contribute to discussions in the online classroom, and occasionally present their own lecture. Outside of the classroom, PIs hoped to provide a private social networking space for students to interact with the goal of developing a future cohort of professional researchers interested in working collaboratively with industry. Following a needs and goals assessment, technologies were chosen that resulted in an overall successful solution. This presentation will review the considerations, opportunities, and challenges of conducting an online experience to mimic in-person education and networking.

Does your library offer programs related to coding? Coding is quickly gaining traction as an essential digital skill in the 21st century, and many public libraries are offering coding classes for youth and adults as a way of promoting STEM education (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). The challenge is that coding is often a new skill for librarians and library staff who are responsible for offering programs. The good news is that you don’t have to be an expert in computer science to offer effective educational programs that teach coding skills. There are many free resources that can be used as a guide to starting a coding club at your library, no experience required.
See two examples of public libraries that have offered coding clubs using free curriculum provided by library partners.
-- The Memorial Hall Library (Andover, MA) offered a coding club in 2016 in partnership with Girls Who Code, a nonprofit organization that provides a framework and curriculum for coding clubs.
-- The Piscataway Library (New Jersey) just completed their second round of their Computer Science Club using the free Google CS curriculum. This theme centered around Fashion & Design.
Faith Trust and Pixie Dust Implementing Ares at Yale
This document provides an overview of Yale University Library's implementation of the Ares course reserves management system. It describes the library's previous unsustainable course reserves workflows and the evaluation process that led them to select Ares. The implementation was a collaborative effort involving various teams who planned the integration with other systems, conducted data conversion, and created training and marketing materials. The Ela Area Public Library opened two Digital Media Labs in December 2011 to provide resources and training for community members in digital literacy. The labs contain Mac computers loaded with creative software as well as equipment for audio/video editing, scanning, and converting analog formats. They have been very popular, averaging 75-100 uses per month. The labs aim to promote skills like video production, photography, and music creation. They are staffed by the reference desk and offer instructional materials, classes, and one-on-one appointments to support community members using the technology.
