2. WHAT IS AIR
TEMPERATURE
?
PRESENTATION
TITLE
2
Air temperature affects the growth
and reproduction of plants and
animals, with warmer temperatures
promoting biological growth. Air
temperature also affects nearly all
other weather parameters. For
instance, air temperature affects
4. SURFACE AND AIR
TEMPERATURE
PRESENTATION
TITLE
4
Surface air temperature is the
temperature of the air around us,
generally measured at a height of
around two meters (about 6 and a
half feet) above the surface.
Thermometers, shielded from
direct solar energy, are used to
measure surface air temperature.
6. DAILY AND ANNUAL
CYCLES OF AIR
TEMPERATURE
PRESENTATION
TITLE
6
Daily insolation varies over the
seasons of the year, owing to the
Earth's motion around the Sun and
the tilt of the Earth's axis. That
rhythm produces a net radiation
cycle, which, in turn, causes an
annual cycle in mean monthly air
temperatures.
8. WORLD PATTERN
OF AIR
TEMPERATURE
PRESENTATION
TITLE
8
Global patterns of air temperature
are a reflection of the relative
importance of sun angle and
insolation intensity, day length,
and location with respect to water
bodies. We have found that low
latitude locations experience less
variation in sun angle and day
length than do mid- and high
latitude locations.
10. TEMPERATURE
STRUCTURE OF THE
ATMOSPHERE
PRESENTATION
TITLE
1 0
The atmosphere can be divided
into layers based on its
temperature, as shown in the figure
below. These layers are the
troposphere, the stratosphere, the
mesosphere and the thermosphere.
A further region, beginning about
500 km above the Earth's surface,
is called the exosphere.
12. GLOBAL WARMING
AND THE
GREENHOUSE
EFFECT
PRESENTATION
TITLE
1 2
Greenhouse gases act similarly to
the glass in a greenhouse: they
absorb the sun's heat that radiates
from the Earth's surface, trap it in
the atmosphere and prevent it from
escaping into space. The
greenhouse effect keeps the Earth's
temperature warmer than it would
otherwise be, supporting life on
Earth.
13. CONCLUSION
PRESENTATION
TITLE
1 3
Air temperature affects the growth and
reproduction of plants and animals, with
warmer temperatures promoting biological
growth. Air temperature also affects nearly
all other weather parameters.
