Photochemical smog, particulate matter, and acid deposition are three major air quality problems caused by air pollution. Photochemical smog forms when volatile organic compounds and nitrogen oxides react in the presence of sunlight to produce ground-level ozone. Particulate matter comes from direct emissions of PM from sources like transportation as well as secondary formation from emissions of sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and volatile organic compounds. Acid deposition occurs when emissions of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides from the burning of fossil fuels dissolve in water in the atmosphere to form acids that are deposited on land and water bodies.
