Air Pollution Abatement
Green Brick Technology
Introduction
Air pollution by brick kiln is mainly because
of using outdated technologies which are
energy intensive and highly polluting. To
mitigate this problem, adaptation of modern
clean technology is obvious. Because of
eco-friendly nature, this technology is
popularly known as ‘Green Brick Technology.
Overview of Brick
Making Industry
in Bangladesh
Bangladesh has about 6000 authorized
brick fields and numerous illegal ones.
Existing Technologies are Mainly
Fixed Chimney Kiln(fck) and Bull’s
Trench Kiln(btk)
Most of them are operated as
small unit and seasonal.
Brick making industry is a significant sector in
Bangladesh contributing about 1% to GDP and a
source of about 1 million people.
Despite enormous importance it’s role is getting
controversial because of being a prime source of
air pollution in adjoining areas.
It contributes about 40% of fine particulate
matter pollution in cities.

In Bangladesh, about 90% of
brick fields use high polluting
technology. These conventional
technologies use raw fire woods
and low graded coal as fuel.
Emissions from brick kilns
are mainly very harmful
gases including SOx, NOx,
CO2, CH4, suspended
particulate matters ( PM 2.5,
PM 10)

Fixed chimney kilns are one of the
main polluters in Bangladesh.
Potentiality

Some pilot projects had
been conducted in
association with ADB and
UNDP in Bangladesh.

 Uses coal or natural

injection and external
firing in insulated kiln
 High quality brick
with reduced
emissions.
Improved Fixed Chimney Kiln(IFCK)
 Use of internal fuel.
 Back process
mechanization.
 Improved firing
practices and
operating system.
 Filtration of flue
gases.
Improved Zigzag Kiln(IZigzag)
 Improved Zigzag is the
improved and standard
version of Zigzag kiln which
leads to lower emission and
higher energy efficiency .
 Improvements are use of
internal fuel and better flue
gas scrubbing.
 Less efficient and less
familiar than other green
brick technologies in
Bangladesh.

• New technologies do not use fire

• Green brick technology consumes less fuel.
• Automated, thus less labor cost.
• Assistance from Govt. and private banks.
• Extremely high demand.
• Quick and secured recovery of investment,
may with in 1 year.
Health Aspects
Health Aspects
• Less emission of particulate matters hence
less health damaging.
• More safety in working place.
• Less dust and other pollution
• Less risk of respiratory diseases.
Social Aspects
• Women can work .
• It benefits both owners and workers as it
brings more money than traditional one.
• Green brick technology can be operated
round the year, hence eliminates migration
problem and job unavailability of workers.
Conclusion
Due to energy insufficiency, environmental
pollution, and less production; existing brick
technologies should have to be upgraded or
replaced to keep pace with rising demand.
In that case, the adaptation of green brick
technology is the only one rightful choice to
abate air pollution and to insure sustainable
brick production.

  • 2. Introduction Air pollution by brick kiln is mainly because of using outdated technologies which are energy intensive and highly polluting. To mitigate this problem, adaptation of modern clean technology is obvious. Because of eco-friendly nature, this technology is popularly known as ‘Green Brick Technology.
  • 3. Overview of Brick Making Industry in Bangladesh
  • 4. Bangladesh has about 6000 authorized brick fields and numerous illegal ones. Existing Technologies are Mainly Fixed Chimney Kiln(fck) and Bull’s Trench Kiln(btk) Most of them are operated as small unit and seasonal.
  • 5. Brick making industry is a significant sector in Bangladesh contributing about 1% to GDP and a source of about 1 million people. Despite enormous importance it’s role is getting controversial because of being a prime source of air pollution in adjoining areas. It contributes about 40% of fine particulate matter pollution in cities.
  • 6. ‘’ In Bangladesh, about 90% of brick fields use high polluting technology. These conventional technologies use raw fire woods and low graded coal as fuel. Emissions from brick kilns are mainly very harmful gases including SOx, NOx, CO2, CH4, suspended particulate matters ( PM 2.5, PM 10) How Air is Polluted by Brick Kiln?
  • 7. Fixed chimney kilns are one of the main polluters in Bangladesh.
  • 8. Potentiality of Green Brick Technology in Bangladesh Some pilot projects had been conducted in association with ADB and UNDP in Bangladesh. From the reports of these projects, the potentiality of green brick technology can be illustrated as follow • Environmental Aspects • Economical Aspects • Health Aspects • Social Aspects
  • 9. Hybrid Hoffman Kiln (HHK) Vertical Shaft Brick Kiln (VSBK) Improved Fixed Chimney Kiln (IFCK) Improved Zigzag Kiln (IZigzag) Green Brick Technologies
  • 10. Hybrid Hoffman Kiln (HHK) Developed in Germany  Uses coal or natural gas  It combines fuel injection and external firing in insulated kiln  High quality brick with reduced emissions.
  • 11. Improved Fixed Chimney Kiln(IFCK)  Use of internal fuel.  Back process mechanization.  Improved firing practices and operating system.  Filtration of flue gases.
  • 12. Improved Zigzag Kiln(IZigzag)  Improved Zigzag is the improved and standard version of Zigzag kiln which leads to lower emission and higher energy efficiency .  Improvements are use of internal fuel and better flue gas scrubbing.  Less efficient and less familiar than other green brick technologies in Bangladesh.
  • 14. Environmental Aspects • Low consumption of energy and less emission. • It involves using of internal fuel. • It emits low load of PM. • Topsoil uses are very little affected. • New technologies do not use fire woods.

  • 16. Economic Aspects • Green brick technology consumes less fuel. • Automated, thus less labor cost. • Assistance from Govt. and private banks. • Extremely high demand. • Quick and secured recovery of investment, may with in 1 year.
  • 18. Health Aspects • Less emission of particulate matters hence less health damaging. • More safety in working place. • Less dust and other pollution • Less risk of respiratory diseases.
  • 19. Social Aspects • Women can work . • It benefits both owners and workers as it brings more money than traditional one. • Green brick technology can be operated round the year, hence eliminates migration problem and job unavailability of workers.
  • 20. Conclusion Due to energy insufficiency, environmental pollution, and less production; existing brick technologies should have to be upgraded or replaced to keep pace with rising demand. In that case, the adaptation of green brick technology is the only one rightful choice to abate air pollution and to insure sustainable brick production.
