1. Aims and Context.

The target audience for my screenplay is men at least in their mid-25’s who have
middle class jobs or professions and of high intelligence and will be able to interpret
the neo-noir elements and make sense of related films to my screenplay.Also they
must have an awareness of stereotypes and conventions from old Film Noir to more
the more modern approach of Neo-Noir and the advance and adaption of classic
conventions.
Stylistic influences originate from non-linear sequences such as the opening dream
scene that will need to be interpreted by intelligent audiences in order to
understand; there will be retro cars and detective inspectors as the main
protagonists to suit the mood of neo-noir, effective useof sound, shadowing on
characters faces; and abstract sequences. I will also add surreal elements to the
narrative through the use of dreams and flashback sequences which will be
incorporated into the narrative.
I am employing conventions of Neo-Noir and surreal cinema into my screenplay as I
have studied these two topics in-depth throughout my course through films such as
‘se7en’ and ‘Identity’. I will use the style of Neo-Noir such as dull colour to create the
mood and tension whilst creating a surrealistic atmosphere through use of non-
linear editing techniques and manipulation of sound and mise en scene to amplify
and contradict metaphorical meaning.
I am looking to create a screenplay with surreal elements that mirror David Lynch’s
as I studied him for my small scale research. I will choose an unusual location;
somewhere that seems deserted and well away from modern society to give that
strange, alienated feel to it. I will also use mise en scene and manipulate props and
character emotions and performance to suggest suspense and keep the audience on
edge. I will plan out the narrative for my screenplay to annotate character
descriptions and similar locations. I will then give myself at maximum, a week, to
finish the screenplay.
The will be using new skills such as learning to place narrative in fragmented order;
something which I have learnt from my close study of David Lynch. Skills that I learnt
in the past on my film course, such as planning out narratives for films, I will be using
to roughly plan out narrative for my screenplay.
