Navigating the COVID-19 Independent School Financial Crisis April 14, 2020 Presenters: Ari Betof and Kelsey Vrooman Independent schools must quickly prepare for the unprecedented financial sustainability challenges the COVID-19 global pandemic poses. Ongoing expense obligations coupled with potential declines in net tuition revenue, philanthropy, and auxiliary income risk creating a multi-stage crisis that will challenge all independent schools and may push schools in weaker positions past the point of viability. AIMS and AISGW invite heads of school and CFOs to join in discussion with Ari Betof and Kelsey Vrooman as they model the combination of financial factors already impacting independent schools and those likely to arise in the weeks ahead. The survey results show that the economic crisis has moderately or severely affected most grantee organizations. Organizations have seen reductions in overall funding, individual donations, and some donors reneging on pledged funds. Communities have also been moderately or severely affected, with observed effects like increased difficulties for populations and families engaging children in work or reducing meals. Despite challenges, organizations are taking actions like becoming more efficient and expanding impacts with available resources to reduce effects of the crisis.

The Case for iCivics
iCivics was founded by Justice Sandra Day O'Connor after she retired from the Supreme Court in 2006 to address a lack of civic knowledge among students. iCivics partnered with Filament Games in 2009 to develop educational games about civics that provide goals, feedback and inquiry like other games. Since then, iCivics games have been played over two million times in every state. Recent expansions include full curriculum units, avatars, achievements and real-life student service projects to further engage users.

Independent Schools on the Brink

Numerous independent schools across the nation entered the COVID-19 global pandemic on thin ice and struggling with issues of viability. Like a plane headed for a mountain, the only possibilities are to dramatically alter course and pull up before it is too late or realize a crash is inevitable and soften the landing as much as possible. No leadership team or board wants to acknowledge that their school may not (or will not) survive. True stewardship involves being honest and forthright about the universe of possible and impossible futures for the school both as a nonprofit organization and as an educational community.
Independent school associations around the country invite heads of school, leadership teams, and board members to a confidential discussion about these challenging issues. The expert panel will discuss tangible steps schools should consider in this moment of extreme challenge. Please note that participants will be able to take part and ask questions anonymously during the webinar.

Microfinance has the potential to positively impact rural economies and lift people out of poverty. However, rigorously evaluating the actual impact of microfinance programs on outcomes like income, consumption, empowerment is difficult due to issues like selection bias and other external factors changing over time. Randomized controlled trials that compare eligible participants randomly assigned to a treatment group that receives microloans to a comparison group that does not can help establish causal effects by controlling for these biases. Further research is still needed to identify the most effective program designs and complementary services that maximize microfinance's poverty alleviation impact.
Analysis of impact of microfinance on rural economy
Microfinance aims to provide financial services to low-income clients. Rigorously evaluating its impact is important to understand if benefits justify costs and improve program design. However, impact evaluations face challenges like selection bias and non-random placement. Randomized evaluations that compare clients in program areas to those in control areas can help address these issues by attributing any differences to the program. Sample size, unit of randomization, and how randomization is operationalized must be considered in evaluation design.

The panel included a financial aid director, a reporter, and a managing director from a behavioral design firm. They discussed issues families face in affording higher education and understanding financial aid. Numerous independent schools across the nation entered the COVID-19 global pandemic on thin ice and struggling with issues of viability. Like a plane headed for a mountain, the only possibilities are to dramatically alter course and pull up before it is too late or realize a crash is inevitable and soften the landing as much as possible. No leadership team or board wants to acknowledge that their school may not (or will not) survive. True stewardship involves being honest and forthright about the universe of possible and impossible futures for the school both as a nonprofit organization and as an educational community.
Independent school associations around the country invite heads of school, leadership teams, and board members to a confidential discussion about these challenging issues. The expert panel will discuss tangible steps schools should consider in this moment of extreme challenge. Please note that participants will be able to take part and ask questions anonymously during the webinar.

Microfinance has the potential to positively impact rural economies and lift people out of poverty. However, rigorously evaluating the actual impact of microfinance programs on outcomes like income, consumption, empowerment is difficult due to issues like selection bias and other external factors changing over time. Randomized controlled trials that compare eligible participants randomly assigned to a treatment group that receives microloans to a comparison group that does not can help establish causal effects by controlling for these biases. Further research is still needed to identify the most effective program designs and complementary services that maximize microfinance's poverty alleviation impact.
Analysis of impact of microfinance on rural economy
Microfinance aims to provide financial services to low-income clients. Rigorously evaluating its impact is important to understand if benefits justify costs and improve program design. However, impact evaluations face challenges like selection bias and non-random placement. Randomized evaluations that compare clients in program areas to those in control areas can help address these issues by attributing any differences to the program. Sample size, unit of randomization, and how randomization is operationalized must be considered in evaluation design.

The panel included a financial aid director, a reporter, and a managing director from a behavioral design firm. They discussed issues families face in affording higher education and understanding financial aid. Suggestions for improvement included simplifying information and processes, personalizing communication, being more responsive, reaching out to families earlier, using data to track progress, and exploring behavioral insights and innovations. A text message intervention was cited that increased college enrollment rates by 3-7 percentage points at low cost.

Impact on the Individual: Remote work
individuals and families were also impacted significantly during the worldwide shutdown.
. On top of all this change, another new challenge for many was working from home switching to virtual interact with work.
The Need to Solve “First-order” and “Second-order” Impacts
first-order or “immediate” impacts are issues such as the rise of domestic violence, food insecurity, and economic issues.
The second-order impact or “ripple effect,” that donors that typically funded nonprofits and private charitable organizations faced challenges of their own when the people they served needed them most.

These are important considerations in efforts to move forward to benefit all members of the community, across multiple dimensions of economic and physical health and potentially implemented through a more focused approach to corporate social innovation.
Shifting production lines.
To deal with shortages some companies shifted their production lines to meet new types or levels of demand, such as PPEs for example,
Eddie Bauer produced, donated and delivered at least 15,000 N95 and surgical masks in April to Washington State’s Department of Enterprise Services.
GAP Inc. also used their global supply chain to channel supplies.
Another example was Automakers Ford and General Motors accepted contracts from the federal government to produce 50,000 ventilators.

Hindsight 2020: The Future of Higher Education
In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, higher, health, and medical education environments have gone from previously packed lecture halls to now empty seats. How must institutions of academic medicine and advanced learning pivot, transform, and adapt in order to ready for and survive the uncertain future? We keep hearing "new normal," but It is not that it is a new normal, but a pathway toward the future that we are seeing more clearly and visibly. We just have to adapt and change more quickly, which will require a new way of thinking in order to navigate the future.
