9. STATE OF THE ART
The concept of sustainable development, understood as meeting the needs
of present generations without compromising the ability of future
generations to meet their own needs, was introduced for the first time in
1987 by a woman, the former Prime Minister of Norway, Gro Harlem
Brundtland.
True sustainability derives from a process that considers both the natural
environment and the economic and social demands of the man-made
environment. The built environment should be at the heart of the pyramid
of sustainability and must be designed to maximise economic value and
minimise consumption of natural resources while protecting the welfare
of individuals.

10. Thirty years after the classic UN definition, the concept of sustainable
development has evolved beyond the initial anthropocentric vision to involve

Fondazione Prada will hold a session on sustainability and innovation at a
meeting held by Yale University and Milan Polytechnic representatives in Milan,
on 20 -21 March. The event will explore new possibilities of connections between
