Very few unsolicited proposals by private parties actually lead to successful public-pri-
vate partnerships, even though this construction has a great deal going for it now
that the division of tasks and market conditions in the field of area development are
changing. What are the success factors here, and what means of control are available
for the public and private parties involved? What are the necessary conditions for
success, and which factors are decisive in this connection? Learn the results of a holistic
study carried out in cooperation with the department of Urban Management and
Development at Erasmus University Rotterdam.

DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS FOR RAILWAY STATIONS AND THEIR SURROUNDINGS
The modernisation of railway stations and track in many big cities is combined with
development of the area surrounding the station, transforming these access nodes into
widely sought-after locations for companies, with stylish residential and recreational
facilities for residents and visitors. This combination gives the inner-city areas in ques-
tion a welcome boost. Now that railway companies, government at various levels and
private parties have scaled down their investment policies, new sources of investment
are needed. This forum discusses new investment strategies, mobility-oriented develop-
ment and smart mobility.

Everyone knows the situation: a stubborn problem, where risks, nuisance or poor living
conditions persist because no agreement can be reached about the right approach.
More and more members of the public are tired of waiting for the professionals to get
their act together, and take the initiative to tackle the problems themselves. This ap-
proach often yields the desired results. KNHM – actively supports public involvement in
community planning. This case study illustrates the good results that can be obtained
with reference to a project in the municipality of Montfort.

Cities and their hinterland are increasingly subject to cross-border competition. The
room for manoeuvre in our low countries behind the dikes is becoming too small,
especially as far as the knowledge economy is concerned. Our cities need to become
more adaptable. Of course, we need to go on investing in high-quality facilities
and accessibility. But the city of the future will above all have to invest in flexibility,
to enable it to respond promptly to transient economic opportunities and climate
change. This demands a new approach to urban planning and its financing. New
coalitions are the key to success.
