Lawmakers rejected Prime Minister Theresa May’s Brexit deal for a third time on Friday,
sounding its probable death knell and leaving Britain’s withdrawal from the European
Union in turmoil on the very day it was supposed to quit the bloc , The pound headed for
its worst month since October against the dollar after U.K. lawmakers voted down Prime
Minister Theresa May’s Brexit plan for a third time.
British retail sales fell by their most in 17 months in March, reflecting concern among
shoppers about Britain's unresolved Brexit impasse.
Influential Federal Reserve Vice Chair Randal Quarles, setting aside recent data weakness
and complaints from the White House about interest rate hikes, on Friday gave a bullish
view of the U.S. economy and said more rate increases may be needed if recent positive
trends in productivity and investment continue.
Kansas City Fed President Esther George on Wednesday said she’s not worried about the
inflation outlook and doesn’t see the need to overhaul the central bank’s policy of
aiming for a 2% annual inflation target.
Oil prices rose on Friday, on track for their biggest quarterly rise in a decade, as U.S.
sanctions against Iran and Venezuela as well as OPEC-led supply cuts overshadowed
concerns over a slowing global economy .

The Kingdom's public debt reached JD28.3 billion by the end of 2018, split between JD25 billions of central government debt (the
budget) and JD3.3 billion as a government guaranteed loan.
The external debt of both the government and the private sector was estimated at JD22.2 billion by the end of 2018, while the
net internal debt to local banks for the government and the private sector reached JD35.2 billion and internal debt granted from
non-banking sources hit JD6.4 billion.
The 2018 Global Knowledge Index on Thursday ranked Jordan 76th out of 134 countries. Jordan’s overall knowledge value stood
at 45, three points behind the world average.
The Kingdom ranked the highest in the “Higher Education” category, in which it came in 44th place, but scored what experts
called a “disappointing” 104th place in the “Technical and Vocational Education and Training” index.
Jordan ranked 9th in the amount of research its institutions of higher education carry out, with a value of 92.1 per cent.
The figures released by the emirate’s statistics center website showed GDP expanded 1.9% in 2018, down from 3.1% the
previous year. Finance, mining and manufacturing were among the worst-performing industries& the expected key headwinds
to Dubai’s economy will likely come from oversupply of infrastructure and the external backdrop.
Saudi Arabia’s expansionary budget is expected to boost economic growth in the Kingdom, according to S&P Global Ratings. The
ratings agency said it expects Saudi Arabia to reduce budgeted expenditure to achieve its goal of a balanced budget by 2023.
Fitch Ratings has upgraded Egypt's Long-Term Foreign-Currency Issuer Default Rating (IDR) to 'B+' from 'B'. The Outlook is
Stable.
Uber Technologies Inc. Chief Executive Officer Dara Khosrowshahi has cut the largest deal of his tenure, buying Middle Eastern
ride-hailing competitor Careem Networks FZ for USD3.1 billion. Uber will pay Dubai-based Careem USD1.4 billion in cash, and
another USD1.7 billion in convertible notes when the deal closes, the two companies said in a statement early Tuesday morning.
They are seeking regulatory approval in the 15 countries where Careem operates. The deal is expected to close in the first
quarter of 2020.
