A design proposal that aims to revitalize a secondary town in Melaka (Masjid Tanah) into a gastronomy-themed town. In terms of architectural contribution, it redefines how a community center could be, a hybrid of an industrial vertical farm with the existing local market and other supplementary communal facilities. Playing with the organic and welcoming spaces of communal function with the rigid and systematic spaces of industrial vertical farming function, it has a unique and one of a kind image to portray for the local and to the nation. A strong statement for the town to pursue sustainability in terms of environment and more importantly social economy.

As the flagship project for the next downtown Boston neighborhood slated for growth, Atlantic Wharf will be the city of Boston’s first LEED Gold mixed-use development. CBT Architects presents a case study on this new one million square foot project that includes approximately 65 residential units, ground-level retail and public spaces, six stories of below-grade parking, and 31 floors of office space that will bring urban activity directly to the Fort Point Channel water’s edge.
The new sustainable development is at the base of a series of restored and renovated historic structures that preserve the texture and streetscape of this site, integrated with a modern highrise glass tower. By preserving the south and east façades of the historic warehouses, using a very energy-efficient curtainwall, and employing green roof technologies, Atlantic Wharf will be the a centerpiece of Boston's green development.
A case study on Public spaces....DELHI HAAT....(INA).Dilli Haat is an open-air food plaza and craft bazaar located in Delhi, run by Delhi Tourism and Transportation Development Corporation (DTTDC). Unlike the traditional weekly market, the village Haat, Dilli Haat is permanent. It is located in the commercial centres of South Delhi, opposite INA market. The 6 acres of land on which this complex is situated was salvaged as part of a reclamation project and transformed into a plaza. Extensive foundation work, small thatched roof cottages and kiosks give the plaza a village atmosphere. Some shops are permanent but other sellers are rotated, usually for fifteen days.The architectural features of the complex have been especially designed in the traditional north Indian style, with brickwork jail (lattice) and stone roofs.A hall in the complex specifically caters to exhibitions of the handlooms and handicrafts. A souvenir shop, also displays attractive ethnic products.The small thatched roof cottages and kiosks, without any concrete structures provide a village atmosphere.The shops are set up on platforms, which act as a link in the Bazar design. The courtyards between the shops are paved in stone and interspaced with grass to retain a visual softness.The landscaping of the area incorporates colourful flowering shrubs and trees, thus the entire complex is in harmony with the environment.

Cities today are constantly under pressure to accommodate a growing urban population and their increasing demand for various resources, such as energy, water, waste management, transportation, and food. Some of these resources are basic living requirements, and the most important of those being food. According to the current practices, food demand is mostly met by food grown on farmland away from the cities. This creates a bigger carbon footprint due to transportation, farming energy usage as well as environmental damage through agricultural contaminants, etc. Additionally, traditional farming often encounters climate extremes and disasters making it more difficult for farmers to survive. Hence there is a need to explore alternative techniques which can address issues concerned with traditional farming practices, one of such techniques is vertical farming. It is essentially a combination of variety of technologies, placed in an urban setting to help reduce most of the issues related to urban food demands and be environmentally less damaging at the same time.

THE PROPOSAL – SIGNIFICANCE & IMPACT
Good day to the audience, I would like to present my final thesis design proposal named Agri-Market Hall. It is a sustainable solution to solve numerous issues in the local context of Masjid Tanah, Malacca. The proposal also aligned with a greater cause which is food security. It is a global issue that closely relates to us. Thus before digging straight to my proposal, let me guide you through my research foundation.
Food security is a global issue which closely relates to one of our foundation of civilization which is agriculture. The problem of our traditional agricultural practice had evolved over time and caused some unprecedented crisis. Famine, due to poor distribution and utilization of food; food waste, due to oversupply and underutilized food supply; drought & leaching, intense agriculture; and deforestation, claiming more land for agricultural production.
So what can we do about it? One way that I come across is through urban agriculture. By moving agriculture practice into urban context, it reduces the deteriorate trend of the crisis. With 75% of our population are urbanized (Malaysia 2015, World Bank), it is eminent that we bring the food supply nearer to the consumer, literally by distance. The spectrum of the practice ranges from community farm, commercial farm to institutional farms and community gardens.
Let us look at a much macro scale concept on the sustainable development goals developed by United Nations. Through urban agriculture, there are several notable goals that can be realized. For instance: decent work and economy growth; industry, innovation and infrastructure; sustainable cities and communities and more importantly responsible consumption and production. The main idea is to create a smart, sustainable urban civilization that builds on sustainability and zero waste.
Besides focusing on environmental and economic sustainability, my dissertation research also covers social sustainability. The aim of my research is to create a design matrix that is able to inject social sustainability into Masjid Tanah. The placemaking process includes 4 main aspects: sociability, interactive-able and friendly spaces; uses and activities, diversification and empowerment; access and linkages, pedestrian and vehicular experience; finally comfort and image, ultimately create a sense of security.
Besides that, I also used my previous 3 semester’s pre- thesis's study to back up my final proposal, laying a stronger foundation. The first semester’s institutional building focused on social sustainability, emphasizing interactive spaces and empowering spaces. The second semester’s communal building focused on urban intervention that themed under gastronomy culture. The third semester’s agricultural building focused on sustainable system integration of the building to make vertical farming viable. The fusion of the above created my final thesis proposal.
The first semester’s work of mine introduced a concept of learning and empowering to achieve social sustainability. The idea of achieving sustainable happiness through food and culture satisfaction according to the Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs is implemented. This involved a learning cycle where people learn, practice, contribute and influence to make individually and communally a better one. When a culture matured in a community, it transcends the many differences between people, creating a strong sense of belonging.
The second semester’s work revolved around urban intervention to revamp the old and inject new sustainable elements into the town, Masjid Tanah. The revitalization was themed gastronomy due to the fact that the identified culture that transcends the locals is food and culture. Thus, the proposal introduced empowering programs and infrastructure to create a sustainable lifestyle for all. The culture like farm to fork, innovative and creative will definitely help in sustaining the town.
The masterplan of the urban intervention focused along the path that is highlighted in red. The path connects crucial nodes and district like residential zone, public field, the local market (Agri-Market Hall’s site), shop houses, and also the town’s bus terminal. The intervention proposed a continuous journey from the bus terminal to the current proposal site, forming a gastronomy path which provides a diversity of gastronomy exposure. The urban intervention also includes an environmentally sustainable solution to make it more inclusive.
The third semester’s work focused on fusing vertical farming with the local market building. The intention is to improve the productivity and efficiency of such architecture typology, market. Besides considering the planning of program integration, the main goal is to equip the building with sustainable technology integration. This will make the building to have zero waste and truly sustainable. The integration includes power consumption, water consumption, and waste management.
Finally, we are back to my final thesis proposal. There are three issues and three design objectives for that. The first issue is about the competition between SME and giant franchise, which I proposed to introduce new infrastructure that creates an inclusive ecosystem for all. The second issue is the poorly maintained and underutilized local market, which I proposed to reinvent the market typology to a more sustainable version. The third issue is a lack of attraction and opportunity for the young generation, which I proposed to give what people desire.
Therefore, the proposal of Agri-Market Hall intends to revitalize the town by rebranding it into a gastronomical town. The proposal will be the pilot building to ignite the revamp through introduction of riverfront development, pedestrian friendly planning and also gastronomy education. As for an architectural solution, the idea is as simple as putting the vertical farming on top of the local market, making scaling easier for the farming. The market remains on the ground to promote great accessibility.
The concept of my proposal is a sustainable ecosystem. It has to be inclusive which a diverse spectrum of people can be involved in the building. The ecosystem is implemented within the building through program planning. Retails, market and F&B outlets are the output of the building where transaction happened through the good exchange. The input programs are the community facility, training center and offices where transaction happened through learning and teaching, and also intangible activities.
The ecosystem also includes a vertical farming facility that is applied on the roof, interior, basement and ground of the building. It focused on enclosed, containerized and hydroponics planting methods. The production is intended for local food supply and retail. There are six plants selected based on their marketability and revenue generation. They are Portobello mushroom, head lettuce, Romanian lettuce, lemongrass, peppermint, and strawberry.
The clientele involved in this proposal will be categorized into three, the local authority, the vertical farming startup and also the gastronomy education institution. The local authority will facilitate the proposal and provide local planning guidelines. The vertical farming startup will provide the plantation facility and management. The gastronomy education institution will run the education program. Besides, they will cooperate to involve local vendors for the market, retails and F&B outlets.
The local community demography possesses great opportunity. There are 15,000 local residents with 20,000 populations from the surrounding education institutions (2010). The local authority speculates that demography growth is 200% in 2020. The target users for the proposal are the young students, to learn about gastronomy; local families and merchants, to utilize the facilities like market, F&B outlets; and visitors, to experience the new architecture typology.
There are ten design generators that are taken into consideration. In terms of site consideration, they are the site’s active nodes, gastronomy path connecting the bus terminal and site, pedestrian connectivity, entries to the site and riverfront as transitional space. In terms of building design consideration, they are the planning to gain high efficiency, segmentation to allow natural ventilation, stacking up, interconnected levels to promote interaction and finally shadings for sunlight and rain.
The program planning is based on user experience and accessibility. The public (in yellow) will have access to the lower levels that cater for the market, F&B outlets, retails and communal facilities. The professionals are segregated throughout the building for different purpose like vertical farming management, office works and educating. Finally, the students will be dispersed to learn from the professionals in every possible space.
The proposal also considered the implementation of sustainable design features. The features contribute to 5 different contributions: energy efficient, environmentally friendly, self-betterment, water efficient and innovation. Each feature will be linked to at least one contribution and integrates with the building function. Note that the building is consuming a considerable high amount of energy. Therefore, the features help to neutralize the shortcoming.
In conclusion, the significances of the proposal are: the introduction of new food production method whereby approximate 6,000kg of food produced daily; job opportunities provided; awareness education in gastronomy less carbon footprint through sustainable integration and design; river revitalization and sustainable township planning promote vibrancy; strong community through strong cultural identity and finally delivering a possible solution to food security.
