Adopting Agile - a journey to agility

This talk is about the agile adoption journey applied to transition a 40+ members team working on multiple projects. Agile adoption is not about bringing in a new process; instead it is more about defining or rather redefining the organizational culture. One of the biggest challenges that any organization will encounter while it is embracing their agile journey is changing mindset. There are many inherent problems with most organizations which need to be tackled during agile adoption. The main reason for high failure rate is because; change-agents talk of adopting agile and not about transforming the organizational culture to support its agile journey. The sad consequence is mainly due to the fact that change-agents undertaking organizational transformation do not have a proper buy-in or understanding of organizational consequences. Based on experience with various teams, we have defined a framework to address this. This framework focuses on individuals, helping team transformation impacting its organizational culture. To enable the team through agile adoption, I propose six step approach. Evaluate: Conduct agile adoption evaluation and identify gaps Gap analysis: Analyze gaps and derive ways on how to bridge the gaps Propose: Propose and align various agile approaches that suites the team Define: Define plan, adoption approach and road map Pilot: Deploy pilot projects as part of agile transition Extend: Extend across organization

Urban legends from the land of Agile
Agile is being positioned as a magic potion to weed out all corporate inefficiencies. People have seemingly bought the idea that implementing Agile and following its best practices will start boosting their bottomlines positively. However, implementing Agile is a marathon, not a sprint. Peddling this as a “snake oil” is fraught with danger, and doing a disservice both to adopters & practitioners of Agile.
A lot of Agilists believe that Agile simply involves cutting up work into sprints, removing documentation, having daily standups, and doing a fact check at the end of each sprint, is enough to complete software development & deliver it. Nothing could be farther from the truth. On the other hand, baiters of Agile say that there is no “senior” to manage such projects, so tracking of progress is impossible, and that it does not work with large enterprise scale projects or teams. According to them, Agile cannot even promise the delivery of the predefined work on a fixed date, because it does not work on fixed scope. Again, they are missing the forest for the trees.
Such urban legends & misconceptions are harming Agile and preventing the unlocking of real value. The aim of this stage is to list & discuss various urban myths that have been propagated by Agile opponents and also proponents. Agile isn’t and has never been the point, getting better & delivering value have been the keys all along. Learn why Agile frequently fails because of the aforementioned myths, and discuss real world solutions teams have implemented to deliver & better themselves.

The Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe(tm)) is a powerful and popular framework for implementing agile at large scale across the enterprise.
In this talk we will examine some dangerous Agile at Scale implementation anti-patterns from real-world cases I've been involved in such as:
Planned/Mandate-based implementation across the enterprise - Pushing implementations onto people regardless of their interest/motivation to change.
Prescribed-based implementation - Either by the book or as designed by a central committee or an external consultant.
Total focus on practices starting from training all the way through assessment/metrics and lack of attention to spirit/principles.
Expecting every group in the organization to work the same way and implement change the same way.
We will then look at some healthier alternatives I used to drive more successful & sustainable change in several organizations. You will learn some concrete techniques that help live up to the Lean/Agile principles of respecting and engaging people.
Using SAFe as the specific backdrop for discussion, we will review field-proven ideas such as pull-based crossing the chasm approach to implementation, use of open space as part of the different SAFe ceremonies, and how Open Space Agility can combine with SAFe.
Note that the ideas and practices have also been tried with other Scaled Agile approaches such as Enterprise Kanban, LeSS.

Power Grid Model
The global energy transition is placing new and unprecedented demands on Distribution System Operators (DSOs). Alongside upgrades to grid capacity, processes such as digitization, capacity optimization, and congestion management are becoming vital for delivering reliable services.
Power Grid Model is an open source project from Linux Foundation Energy and provides a calculation engine that is increasingly essential for DSOs. It offers a standards-based foundation enabling real-time power systems analysis, simulations of electrical power grids, and sophisticated what-if analysis. In addition, it enables in-depth studies and analysis of the electrical power grid’s behavior and performance. This comprehensive model incorporates essential factors such as power generation capacity, electrical losses, voltage levels, power flows, and system stability.
Power Grid Model is currently being applied in a wide variety of use cases, including grid planning, expansion, reliability, and congestion studies. It can also help in analyzing the impact of renewable energy integration, assessing the effects of disturbances or faults, and developing strategies for grid control and optimization.

Mutation Testing for Task-Oriented Chatbots
Conversational agents, or chatbots, are increasingly used to access all sorts of services using natural language. While open-domain chatbots - like ChatGPT - can converse on any topic, task-oriented chatbots - the focus of this paper - are designed for specific tasks, like booking a flight, obtaining customer support, or setting an appointment. Like any other software, task-oriented chatbots need to be properly tested, usually by defining and executing test scenarios (i.e., sequences of user-chatbot interactions). However, there is currently a lack of methods to quantify the completeness and strength of such test scenarios, which can lead to low-quality tests, and hence to buggy chatbots.
To fill this gap, we propose adapting mutation testing (MuT) for task-oriented chatbots. To this end, we introduce a set of mutation operators that emulate faults in chatbot designs, an architecture that enables MuT on chatbots built using heterogeneous technologies, and a practical realisation as an Eclipse plugin. Moreover, we evaluate the applicability, effectiveness and efficiency of our approach on open-source chatbots, with promising results.

As artificial intelligence inference transitions from cloud environments to edge locations, computer vision applications achieve heightened responsiveness, reliability and privacy.
