Resources for those with
eating disorders
• In Canada, it is estimated that the amount of anorexia nervosa
(AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN) sufferers is 400 000. (CTV
News, 2013)
• 22% of those sufferers will die from their disease. (CTV News,
2013)
• Eating disorders are mental disorders which do not
discriminate, have the HIGHEST mortality rate of all
psychiatric disorders, but are often misinterpreted as diseases
of vanity, or teenage phases. (CTV News, 2013)
• There are NO resources in Simcoe County for adults, and only
outpatient services for those under 18 at Soldier’s Memorial
and RVH. Any stays for medical stabilization involve only
HCPs, which receive incredibly limited training. (Personal
Communication, 2013)
• The following is a case study of the desperation experienced
by one mother:
• Knowing specific medical assessments
• Awareness and participation in political action
• Communicating results with other team members
• Requesting training from nurse managers and higher-ups
when and/or before encountering a pt. you don’t feel
capable of treating with excellence
• Knowing local/nearest resources
• Health teaching (i.e. encourage fluids such as Powerade)
• Recognizing EDs are mental diseases, with physical
ramifications (don’t get so preoccupied by physical
symptoms that underlying causes are ignored)
• Blood pressure lying and standing
• Potassium levels
• Bradycardia AND tachycardia are warning signs of
cardiac insufficiency
• Iron deficient anemia -> low Hgb
• For more examples, see the Primary Care Provider
information put forth by Eating Disorders of York Region:

• Jean Watson’s theory involves treating patients holistically.
Her theory of caring emphasizes that caring for someone’s
basic human needs can potentiate the alignment of mind-
body-spirit. (Kozier, 2013)
• Often times physical needs take precedence over
psychosocial and spiritual needs with eating disorder
patients. The problem with this approach is that EDs are
mental diseases which have physical repercussions, not
vice versa.
• Watson’s theory can be integrated by understanding that
eating disorders are caused by a combination of factors,
and recovery and healing do not occur solely with physical
Ontario’s Excellent Care for All Strategy, which became law
in June of 2010, echoes these goals with its points of:
• The patient is at the centre of the health care system.
• Decisions about patient care are based on the best
evidence and standards.
• The health care system is focused on the quality of
care and the best use of resources.
• The main goal of the health care system is to get better
and better at what it does.

• The main points from our literature review included that
a) physicians and other HCPs feel unqualified and
untrained and b) underlying/comorbid issues aren’t
addressed sufficiently, leading to early termination of
treatment and reoccurrence of symptoms.
(Lafrance, Boachie, & Lafrance, 2013)
(Masson, Perlman, Ross, & Gates, 2007)
• CCAC now has Mental Health & Addiction nurses in the
highschools in Simcoe and Muskoka counties. They support
all mental health issues. They can be used, for example, to
support a teen with lunches.
• Referrals can be made by physicians to outpatient services at
RVH & Soldier’s Memorial if the pt. is under 18 Southlake has
an outpatient and day program for 12-18 and outpatient for 18-
25
• Adults have to be referred by a physician to Toronto General,
North York, or Credit Valley
• Residential care at Homewood Health Centre in Guelph is
available if patients have insurance or pay out of pocket. The
OHIP waitlist is 2-3 years
(Personal Communication, 2013)
• Speak up when you need assistance with meeting the
emotional needs of a patient suffering from an eating
disorder
• Advocate for more training (i.e. contact the National
Initiative for Eating Disorders) for your healthcare team
• Understand that a holistic approach to care is a necessity
• As a nursing student, get involved with advocacy
organizations like NIED- check out
https://www.facebook.com/niedcanada and keep yourself
up-to-date with mental health issues in general
• Understand the connection between behaviours and lab
values
• Know that there is always hope for recovery
