RIPLEY’S AQUARIUM
SHARK ROOF

Resting on top of Canada’s largest indoor
aquarium (Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada)
boasting some 16,000 marine animals and
5.7 million litres of water, sits an intricate
and visually striking roof system installed
by Flynn Canada Ltd.
Installed above an inverted 2-ply modified
bituminous roof system are roughly 17,000
four foot square custom concrete patio
slabs, each stone having a weight of
approximately 110 pounds. Amongst the
17,000 slabs (the majority being LEED
approved solar white slab,) are the two
iconic 190 foot long sharks made from
using low contrast charcoal coloured slabs.
Pairing Flynn’s installation expertise with
B+H’s design, we were able to provide a
superior and unique roofing system that
succeeded multiple performance and
aesthetic goals that were set forth on this
project. Using custom 2-1/2” thick patio
slabs has provided excellent protection for
the roofs membrane from falling ice caused
by the high altitude of the CN Tower in the
winter. The roof system also achieved a
LEED credit for exceeding the necessary
solar reflective index (SRI) value, and
obtained a platinum roof warranty for
a period of 20 years. The patio slab
shark-design provides large and distinct
signage visible to guests of the CN Tower,
businesses in adjacent high-rise buildings,
and passengers landing at the Billy Bishop
Airport in downtown Toronto. This project
has been deemed a great success for
Flynn Canada as it has provided the
aquarium with a final product that will not
only attract attention for a lifetime, but will
also both protect and provide it for the
many years to come.

TORONTO-DOMINION
CENTRE
PRODUCT: Built-Up Green Roof

CLIENT: Toronto-Dominion Centre
LOCATION: Toronto, ON
Situated on top of the iconic TD Pavilion is
Toronto’s first historical “living roof”, built
by none other than Flynn Canada.
The TD Centre building was originally
designed by architect Mies Van Der
Rohe, using deep steel columns and a
waffle-grid ceiling pattern. In order to
preserve the heritage of the building,
Flynn constructed a green roof reflecting
this Modernist style. Planter boxes were
laid out in a grid formation, using a native
plant called Pennsylvania Sedge Grass –
a grass chosen for both its vibrant colour
and ability to grow without disrupting the
overall pattern.
This new vegetated living roof provides
improved thermal resistance, reduces the
urban heat-island effect, minimizes storm
water run-off, and improves air quality.
With climate change playing an increasing
role in building envelope design, it is
important to realize how green roofs can
help provide efficiencies for both indoors
and out.
