This is the first part of a series we are doing about faith development at Cafechurch Melbourne (www.cafechurch.org), largely based on John J Shea's book "Finding God Again." We want to be adults, with fully functional adult faith, but how do we go about it? This session is about the God of the superego with which we start our journey. These images of God aren't wrong exactly, but they become increasingly inadequate, and as we develop, we need to develop more adequate notions of God.
A brief presentation on 12 spiritual disciplines that Richard Foster identifies within Christianity. Find more on discipleship, spiritual formation, and living a life of faith at http://nathanrhale.com

Eckankar teaches its members how to become closer to God by embracing the Light and Sound of Divine Spirit (also known as the ECK). Led by the Living ECK Master, Harold Klemp, Eckankar shows followers how to recognize the Light and Sound of God in all its many forms and how to truly experience these aspects of God’s love. This spiritual path offers a number of spiritual exercises, including Soul Travel techniques, designed to help members, also known as ECKists, become aware of their divine identity as Soul.

In Jude 17-23 Jude shifts from piling up examples of false teachers from the Old Testament to a series of practical exhortations that flow from apostolic instruction. He preserves for us what may well have been part of the apostolic catechism for the first generation of Christ-followers. In these instructions Jude exhorts the believer to deal with 3 different groups of people: scoffers who are "devoid of the Spirit", believers who have come under the influence of scoffers and believers who are so entrenched in false teaching that they need rescue and pose some real spiritual risk for the rescuer. In all of this Jude emphasizes Jesus' call to rescue straying sheep, leaving the 99 safely behind and pursuing the 1.

4. Truly He taught us to love one another,
His law is love, and His gospel is peace
Chains shall he break, for the slave is our brother
And in his name all oppression shall cease
Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we,
Let all within us praise His holy name
Christ is the Lord!
O praise His name forever!
His power and glory
Ever more proclaim!
O HOLY NIGHT (v.3)
6. By the tender mercy of our God,
the dawn from on high will break upon us,
to give light to those who sit in darkness,
and in the shadow of death, to guide
our feet in the way of peace.

“Which commandment is the first of all?”
Jesus answered, “The first is: ‘Hear, O Israel:
the Lord our God, the Lord is one;
you shall love the Lord your God
with all your heart, and with all your soul,
and with all your mind, and with all your
strength.’ The second is this, ‘You shall love
your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other
commandment greater than these.”
MARK 12
14. PRIVILEGE
a special right, advantage,
or immunity granted or available
only to a particular person
or group of people;
rarely, if ever, something to feel
guilty over, or ashamed of, but
something to be grateful for, to build
perspective/empathy from, and take
responsibility for utilizing well…
15. TYPES of PRIVILEGE
- Regular, unhindered access to clean water
- Access to quality education (public/private)
- Affordable housing, and all that goes w/it
- Cell phone service
- No outstanding student debt
- Living at this point in history
- Skin color that isn’t consciously,
or subconsciously viewed in a
negative light…
16. A CHRISTIAN USE of PRIVILEGE
- Intentionally developing creative ways
to leverage the various types of privilege
we experience for the tangible PEACE
of those who – for whatever reason –
don’t share, or have access to them
- Using the resources our privileges
provide us as a platform from
which we can learn about, better
empathize with, and effectively
serve those who don’t…
17. We all have access to the following “capitals”:
- Spiritual
- Relational
- Physical
- Intellectual
- Financial
Ask God to show you how to leverage
one-or-more of these capitals to help
bring PEACE to someone else this week
