Class Overview
Are you a solid video editor ready to up-level your skills? Join Adobe
Certified Trainer Rich Harrington to learn how to harness the power
of Premiere Pro. This is more than “just the basics” — it’s the
necessary training for more advanced editing techniques that takes
your post-production skills to the next level.

Class Overview
• Color work in Premiere Pro, including matching color from shot to shot
• Understanding audio, including audio effects and going beyond the
Essential Sound Panel
• Graphics and titles, including creating captions and caption styles
• Effects and transitions, including use of the Effect Controls panel for
fine-tuning transitional effects

The Goal of Video Editing
▪ A lot of people I know struggle with
video editing because they have a hard
time grasping one of the core concepts,
and that is the goal of video editing.
▪ When it comes to video editing, you are
trying to remove as much as possible.

The Safety Net
▪ Video editing is generally non-destructive
▪ If we are working in the timeline and we
decide to trim away some media, it's still
on the hard drive
▪ You'll also find multiple levels of undo
and even histories, or versions, that are
automatically captured by Premiere Pro
as you edit
▪ The project file in Premiere Pro is very
small, so back it up to capture your edits

Useful shortcuts & tips
▪ Press the ` (accent grave) key to maximize the window under the cursor
▪ The spacebar starts playback
▪ Please wear one earbud so you can hear sound and my voice
▪ If you get stuck raise your hand and a TA will help
▪ We are moving through multiple sequences, so if you fall behind or get lost, you can join on
the next sequence
▪ The goal is to learn 10 new things today…. you cannot and will not learn or understand
everything (and that’s beyond okay)

Keep it Short
▪ I have never met a video that wouldn’t
benefit from some editing.
▪ The whole purpose of video is to
compress time and distill a message to
its essence.
▪ It is important that you refine a project
by continuing to strip away its
unneeded parts.
▪ Rarely have I heard an audience
complain that a video was too short.

Keep it Short
▪ There is a reason to edit and it becomes
increasingly clear when you actually
watch people as they watch your
project.
▪ Do your best to strip a project down to
its essence and only add what is
needed.
▪ When in doubt… cut it out.

Part Two
Just about every shot that you have in a video
project, and I'd even go as far as saying every
shot, needs color correction. This isn't because
you've necessarily done anything wrong, but as
you start to put shots together, little changes
become evident.
Maybe it's that the weather conditions change
slightly or that the two shots just don't feel like
they quite match. Well, color correction and
color grading are two tasks that go a long way
to make the footage feel like it belongs together.

Part Two
▪ Basic Correction. Fix essential exposure and
white balance issues.
▪ Creative. Change the style of your footage with
Looks.
▪ Curves. Advanced color correction and toning.
▪ Color Wheels & Match. Refine color by target
zone or reference.
▪ HSL Secondary. Isolate a specific color or range
for adjustment.
▪ Vignette. Add a soft shadow around the edge to
focus the viewer’s attention.
