Active Procrastination: Examining the Core Self Evaluations of ‘effective’ procrastinators Proposed by Nupur Deshpande

Procrastination What is it? “ absence of self – regulated performance and behavioral tendency to postpone what is necessary to reach a goal” – Knaus, 2000
Procrastination Why do we engage in it? - fear of failure - perfectionism - anxiety - irrational beliefs - attributions - distorted beliefs about time - viewing task as boring or undesirable  - fatigue - ( Renn et al., 2005)
Procrastination What happens when we procrastinate?

Be an ‘effective’ procrastinator… ACTIVE PROCRASTINATOR  -  Decides  to procrastinate (Cognition) -  Prefers  time pressure (Affect) -  Completes  task by deadline (Behavior) -  Satisfied  with the outcome - (Chu & Choi, 2005)
Passive vs. Active Procrastinators  (Chu & Choi, 2005)
What does research say? Purposive use of time & perception of time control (r = .26, p<.001; Chu & Choi, 2005) Time Structure (r = -.22, p<.01; Chu & Choi, 2005) Polychronicity  (r = .19, p<.01; Choi & Moran, 2009) Life Satisfaction (r = .31; p < .001; Choi & Moran, 2009) Self – reported Performance (r = .21; p < .01; Choi & Moran, 2009) Emotional stability (r = .20; p< .01; Choi & Moran, 2009) Conscientiousness (r = -.03; ns; Choi & Moran, 2009) / (ability to meet deadlines r=.33, p<.001)
How is Active Procrastination measured?
So this led them/me to believe that… Active procrastinators may be  different  in their fundamental use of time  (Choi & Moran, 2009) Self – awareness is crucial in the way these people handle tasks  (Renn et al., 2005) This could help organizations!

Method 200 – 300 administrative personnel from a middle sized corporation. Administer:  (a) Scale for Active Procrastination (Choi & Moran, 2009) (b) Scale for Passive Procrastination (Mann, 1982) (c) Core Self – Evaluations Scale (CSES; Judge et al., 2003) (d) JS: The Job in General Scale (Ironson et al., 1989) (e) JP: Supervisory & self – ratings of performance
Analysis Correlational Analysis Control variables: age, gender & tenure
How will this help? Active procrastinators can mentor passive procrastinators. Can understand Cross – cultural differences in perception of time. Can counter boredom arising from monotonous tasks or anxiety from unpredictable ones. Can map out effective vs. ineffective time management behaviors.
