The Role of Fuel Economy in Saving Resources, Dr. Lewis Fulton, NextSTEPS Pro...FIA Foundation
Strong fuel economy improvements will save drivers over $2 Trillion over the next 10 years, and much more in years after.
• Launching PEVs worldwide will initially have higher purchase costs, of a quite uncertain magnitude; $500B reflects very large volume sales and could be considered a high estimate.
• One can imagine a feebate system that generates a sustainable funding stream for the introduction of large numbers of PEVs and other low-carbon vehicles.
• Fuel economy could get us half way to a low carbon LDV system, but we will likely need PEVs to get the rest of the way, especially after 2030.
• PEVs are projected to become more cost-effective than fuel economy improvement after 2030 or 2035.
• Getting there will require building ZEV markets starting now…

Tackling Road Safety Issues through investment in Non Motorized Transport (in the developing world).
What?
To support developing and transitional countries in shifting away from prioritizing the movement of cars towards prioritizing the movement of people; through systematic investment in non-motorised transport.
Why?
Investing in NMT infrastructure not only protects vulnerable road users from high speed traffic but it also improves accessibility and the environment

Pathways to sustainable mobility through local, national and global action @ COP21.
Shifting towards low-carbon mobility needs local, national and global action. International frameworks, national efficiency standards, and taxation, improved public and non-motorized transport transport, electric mobility and urban planning are some of the measures that enable this transition.
Speakers: Policy advisors, practitioners and researchers working on public transport, electromobility, walking and cycling and urban mobility planning from Asia, Latin America and Europe

“It is a crucial moment to be holding a meeting of this kind. The International Energy Agency forecasts that around 400 trillion dollars will be spent on fuels and vehicles to 2050. It’s vital that we ensure that this coming growth is sustainable. Fuel economy has a vital role to play. There are pressing concerns on climate change which fuel economy can address effectively and rapidly. And at the same time, there is a big health, equity and development argument for addressing fuel economy and we must ensure that we get it right.”

Global Trends in Passenger Vehicle Fuel Economy Standards Drew Kodjak, Execut...FIA Foundation
"Nine (9) countries have adopted some form of fuel economy
standards with other countries with complementary policies
(e.g., feebates, labeling).
Three-quarters (75%) of the world’s fleet is currently under
some form of fuel economy standards
The longest lead time for any standards is now set at 2025
Europe and Japan are home to world’s most efficient fleets,
but the gap is narrowing
The pace of vehicle efficiency technology development is
accelerating (e.g., 6 speed transmissions, downsized
turbocharged engines, better tires, hybrids).
Consumer acceptance is widespread given the relatively
short payback period from 2 to 5 years.
Thus we find that to meet the GFEI goal of doubling new
passenger vehicle fuel economy by 2030, we will need all
countries to adopt some form of fuel economy standards."

The Role of Fuel Efficiency for transport modes in achieving the 1.5º/2ºC Obj...FIA Foundation

About the session: The Role of Fuel Efficiency for transport modes in achieving the 1.5º/2ºC Objective
Fuel efficiency measures in transport play and will still play a key role in the future in order to meet whatever agreement will be reached in Paris the next month. This approach has proven it can deliver CO2 emissions reductions in the transport sector – which is one of the key emitters at global level – and it is applicable in a crossmode way.
There is currently an underestimation of the potential that fuel efficiency measures can play in delivering CO2 emissions reductions. Technology and science is well developed and continuously improving on this field, however policy/political developments on this direction do not seem to take off – in large part due to pressure from industry and other groups with different interests.
Policy makers, industry, civil society and academics must work together in the development of fuel efficiency standards, making sure at the same time that enforcement is well defined and established. This will result in CO2 emissions reductions contributing to the UNFCCC objective - investments in technology and improvements of regulations in place.
John German, Senior Fellow of the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT), shared GFEI’s ‘State of the World 2016’ report at the Fuel Economy Detroit event the on 17th March. The event, organised by Automotive Megatrends, brought together key stakeholders from across the US and globally working to create more fuel-efficient vehicles.
His presentation highlighted the status of light and heavy-duty vehicle fuel economy and greenhouse gas emission standards in the US and globally. It also reviewed the global progress towards the GFEI target of doubling new passenger vehicle fuel economy by 2030. Finally, he highlighted the challenge of responding to in-use emissions data which reveals a growing gap between test cycle and real world emissions.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202
