TEXTUAL FEATURES FOR QUESTION 1
SPEED MOTION
ACCELERATION
How is this feature used in Action Adventure?
• Chases
• Races
• Escapes
Everyone come up with their favourite example for each and
give a reason why.
MY FAVOURITES
Chase – The Rock with Nick Cage (in a Lamborghini ) and
Sean Connery (in a Hummer) Because of the close up
through the windscreen shots used to make it look like they
are driving and all the stupid obstacles that keep appearing
in front of them in the road.
Race – the pod race in Star Wars Episode 1 where a young
Anakin has to race against some pretty ruthless aliens
having had his vehicle sabotaged and with he and his Mum’s
freedom on the line
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_krCKECpzrU
Escape – The Great Escape (of course) where all the POW
find various ways to get away having broken out of the camp
and the Nazi’s are coming!
In AA, speed is usually associated with fast moving
vehicles such as cars, motorbikes, boats, planes,
trains.
What would be used in sub genres like:
Sci Fi?
Superhero?
Legend/fantasy/mythology?
Sometimes the need for speed in AA can interrupt the
story and this feature become more about spectacle
than narrative logic (see Top Gun)

Answer Question 1 using
your clip
‘Explain two ways the
characters/events in the
extract fit the action
adventure genre’
Tips:
Focus on Speed, motion and
acceleration as well as spectacle for
you two examples
Use the prompt sheet to help you
10 marks
Level 4 (8-10 marks)
Explains two generic narrative features
Shows thorough understanding of appropriate generic conventions
Ideas and arguments supported by evidence
Precise and accurate use of terminology
Ideas expressed clearly and fluently in well structured sentences with
few, if any, errors of
spelling, punctuation and grammar.
Level 3 (6-7 marks)
States two generic narrative features
Shows sound understanding of appropriate generic conventions
Offers sound textual evidence (at the top) Some accurate use of
terminology
Ideas expressed with some clarity and fluency; errors of spelling,
punctuation and grammar do not
obscure meaning.
Level 2 (3-5 marks)
States at least one generic narrative feature
Shows some understanding of generic conventions
Offers some textual evidence (at the top) Limited use of terminology
Simple ideas expressed appropriately but possibly with some errors of
spelling, punctuation and
grammar that obscure meaning.
‘Explain two ways the characters/events in the extract
fit the action adventure genre’
Explanation 1
Level 3
One of the ways the extract fits the genre is through the use
of a race sequence that introduces speed and acceleration
into the story. An array of alien race cars is shown in a
sequence of close ups before the start of the race with
special effects enhancing the idea of energy and power
coming from their engines. The arena where the race starts
shows that this is a competition and there is an audience of
spectators waiting for the action to start. Tension and
excitement is built as we and they anticipate a fast and
dangerous race.
‘Explain two ways the characters/events in the extract
fit the action adventure genre’
Explanation 2
Another way that the extract fits the genre is through the use
of oppositional characters. The young boy, Anakin, is clearly
shown as the underdog in this race as his pitted against a
host of tough looking aliens. His machine has also been
sabotaged so he is even less likely to win. He is shown to be
determined and capable in the way that he handles his race
car but he doesn’t pay attention to his competitors who seem
to be sizing him up and looking to get rid of him.
‘Explain two ways the characters/events in the extract
fit the action adventure genre’
Explanation 1
Level 4
One of the ways the extract fits the genre is through the use
of a spectacular and original race sequence that
demonstrates high octane speed and acceleration. The
unusual array of alien race cars (or pods) are shown in
montage before the start of the race with special sound and
visual effects enhancing the connotation of energy and
power coming from their engines. The vast, crowded arena
where the race starts shows that this is a popular
competition or event. Various types of spectators are waiting
for the action to start with high ranking officials paying close
attention indicating that the outcome is important. Tension
and excitement is starting to build as we and they anticipate
a fast and dangerous race with an unpredictable conclusion.
‘Explain two ways the characters/events in the extract
fit the action adventure genre’
Explanation 2
Another way that the extract fits the genre is through the use of
oppositional characters who represent good and evil. The young
boy, Anakin, is clearly shown as the underdog in this race as his
pitted against a host of tough looking aliens. His size and age
make him look potentially vulnerable and inexpert in contrast
with the other competitors. His machine has also been
sabotaged so he is even less likely to win. The way that the
audience is shown this when the protagonist himself is kept in
the dark is designed to create tension and expectation. Anakin
already has additional obstacles to overcome if his is to prevail
and is typical of the experience of a hero who has to be
resourceful to succeed. Despite these disadvantages, he is
shown to be determined and capable in the way that he handles
his race car. By not paying attention to his competitors, he fails
to see that his antagonist seems to sizing him up and looking to
get rid of him. This might indicate a trusting nature or an
expectation of fair play that is naïve. He will be forced to learn
the hard way.
