This document discusses codes and conventions used in four films from different genres:
- Warrior (action, drama, martial arts) uses low key lighting, fast editing, close ups of facial expressions, and fast paced music to set the scene and make the audience feel on edge or intrigued.
- Fast and Furious 7 (action, crime, thriller) focuses on the protagonist battling the antagonist and a disruption in order, building tension through a chain of bad events towards a climactic resolution.
- The Maze Runner (science fiction) depicts typical codes like contrasts of good vs evil through hero characters trying to save the planet from invasion through scenes of chaos, explosions and crashes edited with fast shots to create tension

Codes of confections
What is a thriller? A thriller usually consists of a battle between the protagonist character and the antagonist,
when there is a disruption in the equilibrium. Then the story shows a chain of bad events building tension and
suspense for the climax. The aim of the protagonist is to restore justice, while the antagonist seeks to destroy it

2. The Avengers (Typical)• http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y69kGmPeHw0• Binary
opposites of good vs. evil• Hero characters trying to save planet from an invasion, spaceship
causing chaos on streets – lots of explosions and crashes• Fast panning and tracking shots
follow the action – creates tension and audience feel as though they are there, caught up in the
action.• Most hero characters wearing bright colours – connotations of hope, energy and
makes them stand out. Villains are all in grey – blend in with background and keep appearing
from nowhere (makes it seem more amazing when heroes defeat them all) Contrast of bright
and dark colours emphasise the binary opposites of the two sides.• Big city, where most action
happens.

Code of convections:
2. Mise-En-Scene• Dull Lighting (Portrays gritty and bleak nature)• Close ups of characters• Low Angle and High
angle shots- to portray strength and weakness amongst characters.• Clear shots and angles show different groups
within the cast (Teen Drama) These bullet points above show what the mise-en-scene is typically during
Drama/Teen Drama films. For example in Kidulthood (a good example for the type of film we are researching) the
weaker girl is shown by a high angle looking down on her and the bully is shown with a low angle to portray the
strength and power of the bully. Also the lighting in Drama/Teen Drama’s are important as it show’s the gritty side
of Drama/Teen Drama which is vital to our project.

2. Codes <ul><li>Codes are systems of signs, which create meaning. Codes can be divided into two categories –
technical and symbolic. </li></ul><ul><li>Technical codes are all the ways in which equipment is used to tell the
story in a media text, for example the camera work in a film. </li></ul><ul><li>Symbolic codes show what is
beneath the surface of what we see. For example, a character's actions show you how the character is feeling.
</li></ul><ul><li>Some codes fit both categories – music for example, is both technical and symbolic.

are general conventions in any medium, such as the use of interviewee quotes in a print article, but conventions
are also genre specific. </li></ul><ul><li>All genres of film have certain conventions which the audience will expect
to see. </li></ul>Media Studies @ KBA
