Acid attacks violate human rights according to international conventions and the Afghan constitution. The constitution prohibits all acts that violate human dignity. Afghan law defines acid attacks as a form of violence against women and punishes offenders with 10 to 20 years in prison. Though acid attacks were used as a political tactic in the 1970s, the Afghan Independent Human Rights Commission has not recorded any cases in the past three years, indicating the situation has improved.
