Definition
 Social issues are moral problems that affect members of society directly or indirectly,
some of this issues include, poverty, security, crime, addiction to drugs, immigrations,
divorces and etc..
 A social issue is a problem that influences many citizens within a society.

 Afghanistan is mostly mountainous country mountains occupies two-thirds
of the country
 Afghanistan bordered with Uzbekistan,
Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, China,
Pakistan and Iran
 Afghanistan has four major rivers
Kabul, the Helmand, the Amu Darya,
and the Harirud
 Afghanistan have 34 provinces and the capital of Afghanistan is Kabul
Afghanistan is approximately the size
of Texas.
 population of Afghanistan is 39 million as of Monday, February 8, 2021
 82.7 - 89.7% Sunni, Shia Muslims between 10 - 17%.
 0.3% follow other minority religions.
Social Issues in Afghanistan
 Civil war has brought a variety of social ills in Afghanistan, such as poverty,
insecurity, immigration, violence against women etc…
Poverty as a Social issue in Afghanistan
 51.7% of Afghans live in multidimensional poverty.
 The urban poverty rate is 18.1%, whereas the rural rate is 61.1%. 14.7% of the
population in Kabul are poor
 Herat and Nangarhar are home to the highest number of poor people.
Security Issues
 three decades of war in country brought many challenges
 1979, the Soviet union military invaded Afghanistan,
 Pakistani, United States, Saudi, and other states that backed Afghan mujahedeen
 Soviets finally withdrew in 1989,
 1 million Afghans had been killed
 five million fled abroad.
 15,000 Soviet soldiers were dead and 35,000 wounded.
 the Taliban emerged in Southern Afghanistan
Why war and insecurity in Afghanistan?
 Afghanistan Ranked the second least peaceful country in the world
 (Reuters) - Nearly 6,000 Afghan civilians were killed or wounded in the first nine months of
the year as heavy fighting between government forces and Taliban
 The Taliban were responsible for 45% of civilian casualties while government troops caused
23%, it said. U.S.-led international forces were responsible for 2%.
Health and Healthcare Issues
 After 23 years of conflict, Afghanistan’s health system is among the very poorest in the
world.
 There are inadequate supplies of medicines, vaccines, equipment and fuel.
 An estimated 6 million people have no access, or insufficient access to health care.
 Saving lives in Afghanistan depends on having health workers in the field and sufficient
medical supplies, as well as food, shelter and security.
 the gap in material and human resources is great
 mental stress, affecting every family in Afghanistan over time.
 30% of Afghans lack access to basic health services
 Only 60% of Afghans have access to health services across the country
Unemployment
 Unemployment is one of the biggest challenges facing the Afghan people
 particularly members of the younger generation
 Around 68% of the country’s population of some 31 million people is under the age of 25
 since the Taliban were driven out in 2001, and the per capita income in Afghanistan has
grown from $115 in 2001 to 570.00 USD in 2020 according to the World Bank.

Child abuse and Child labor
 Child labor is an issue of growing concern in Afghanistan.
 1 out of 4 Afghan children aged seven to 14 is engaged in some form of hard work.
 Poverty is an obvious contextual factor that dominates the decision-making of all households to
send their childes to work.
 Poor households that send their children to school instead of work are able to justify short-term
sacrifice with the prospect of long-term gains.
Childe Abuse
 Children are one of the most vulnerable groups of society, but the children of Afghanistan
are more vulnerable than other children .
 children are faced with serious threats like kidnapping, trafficking, sexual abuse and sexual
exploitation, drug addiction, murder, beatings
 According to the Ministry of Labor, Social Affairs Martyrs and Disabled, about six and a half
million children are at risk.
 and about 300 thousand children are addict
Violence against women
 Violence against women is one of the most serious human rights issues in Afghanistan
 Although important achievements have been made in different areas
 During war in Women’s rights and freedoms were severely restricted
 Grave human rights abuses included extra-judicial executions, torture, sexual violence,
disappearances, displacement, forced marriage, trafficking and abduction.
 During Taliban time it was difficult for women to go out
 On that time girls was avoided to attend schools
 Afghanistan has one of the worst maternal mortality rates in the world
 one woman dies every 27 minutes due to pregnancy-related complications. This amounts to
around 25,000 deaths per annum
Illiteracy issue
 38.2 % of the population literate
 60% are illiterate.
 9.4 million students in Afghan schools
 3.7 % had dropped out of school
 by 2030, 60 % of the Afghan population will be literate.
 The Taliban now sometimes prefer to control schools rather than to close them.
Restrictions on Girls access to Education
 Taliban commanders sometimes deny or restrict access girls to school’
 cultural factors.
 lack of security, non-availability of female teachers
 girls usually stop school at around sixth grade
Drug abuse and drug addiction
 Drug addiction social problem worldwide
 200 million of the global population, aged 15-64 are addicted.
 509,000 Afghan households being involved in opium cultivation which makes 14 % of the total
population of Afghanistan
 920,000 using drug in AFG ; out of which 120,000 are women
 women’s success in quitting will be developed
 Afghanistan is the exclusive supplier of opium producing 93% of the global opiate market
Immigrations
 the first large wave of modern outmigration from Afghanistan, caused by the Soviet invasion in
1979
 most migrants are in Islamic Republic of Iran and Pakistan
 Between 2002 and 2012, 5.7 million Afghans returned home
 the existence of cross-border networks also used for human trafficking operations
Conclusion
 Afghan people become more bored and tired of social issues
 number of immigrations or increasing because of unemployment among Afghan young
generation
 the poverty rate is also growing fast
 Security and Political settlement remains elusive
 None the less, unless the Taliban enter into peace talks, violent resistance will continue
 Economically, Afghanistan remains heavily dependent on foreign aid.
 The country will need to seriously focus on generating domestic sources of revenue to support
state expenditures and to provide employment opportunities for its citizens
