Women's rights in Afghanistan have improved since 2001 but still face many challenges. From 1992-2001 during the Mojahidin and Taliban regimes, women were prohibited from education and work and were confined to their homes. The Taliban was the only regime to ban female education. After 2001, girls' access to education increased to 35% however 65% remain illiterate. Despite constitutional protections, female politicians and activists still face threats. Overall, while opportunities have grown for Afghan women in the last decade, full gender equality and protection of women's rights require continued progress.
