Richard Nixon pursued both conservative and liberal domestic policies. On the domestic front, he increased funding for programs like Social Security and food stamps, while also appointing conservative judges. In foreign policy, Nixon adopted an approach called Realpolitik that made decisions based on national interests rather than broad principles. He used diplomacy to establish relations with China and sign arms limitation agreements with the Soviet Union to help curb the arms race. However, dependence on foreign oil also increased during his presidency.
