Fan Identification, Twitter Use, & Social Identity Theory in Sportdaronvaught
This .pdf is a literature review written in the Fall of 2013 by Daron Vaught on the effects of social media (namely Twitter) on the processes of fan identification as they pertain to social identity theory.
Twitter is going to become much less important as a person to person (peer to peer) communication medium and instead become more of a content-delivery medium like TV, where content is broadcast to a large number of followers. It's just going to become a new way to follow celebrities, corporations, and the like.
These are the findings of research by two business school professors. Their paper "Intrinsic versus Image-Related Motivations in Social Media: Why do People Contribute to Twitter?", was published in the journal Marketing Science. The professors are Olivier Toubia of Columbia Business School and Andrew T. Stephen of the University of Pittsburgh.
In Professor Toubia’s words, “Get ready for a TV-like Twitter".
The research examined the motivations behind why everyday people, with no financial incentive, contribute to Twitter.The study examined roughly 2500 non-commercial Twitter users. In a field experiment, the profs randomly selected some of those users and, through the use of other synthetic accounts, increased the selected group's followers. At first, they noticed that as the selected group's followers increased, so did the posting rate. However, when that group reached a level of stature — a moderately large amount of followers — the posting rate declined significantly.
"Users began to realize it was harder to continue to attract more followers with their current strategy, so they slowed down.When posting activity no longer leads to additional followers, people will view Twitter as a non-evolving, static structure, like TV."
Based on the analyses, the profs predict Twitter posts by everyday people will slow down, yet celebrities and commercial users will continue to post for financial gain.

Big Data in Social Media
By definition, Big Data can simply be termed as voluminous data. In more specific definitions, it can be termed as that which is large, complex and fast and a s a result, is not in a position to be processed using the typical traditional methods of data processing. The volume, variety, velocity, variability and veracity are used in the categorizing of data as big data. With the development in technology, and the continued incorporation of these technological sources into our day to day lives, the collected data through the Internet of Things among other information systems has resulted in big data (Ivanov, 2018). One such areas where Big data is found is in the social media platforms. As opposed to the olden days, currently, more and more people and companies are using social media daily to achieve their specific objectives and goals, it is estimated that social media platforms like Facebook produce data as big as 500+ terabytes in a s ingle day!
Most of these data in the social media are as a result of the videos, photos, messages and comments being shared across the media platforms. Not only do individuals use social media to keep in touch, but companies also use it in a concept called social media marketing. Through the media, and using big data analytics, companies are able to map out consumer behavior through what they like and what they share (Nicora, 2019). They use these platforms to reach their target audiences and at the same time use them to get feedback from their clients. As a result, the amount of data from social media platforms is not only voluminous, it is also heterogenous in the sense that it contains both nominal and numeral values from different places, it is variable in that it has unpredictable flow, it is fast because it is collected in real time. This qualifies the data to be Big Data and requires big data analytics to process.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Overview
Following research of fan involvement conducted for Northampton Saints Rugby Club by Seymour &
Thompson (2011), this paper builds on that study. This study ‘Fandom & Followers’ investigates the social
media and tribal affiliations with sports properties & fans via social media and in particular Twitter. The study
will focus on two key constructs namely a) Fan behaviours and associations with new media and technologies
that support sports club marketing and b) The involvement of research processes for sports clubs , as well as
some interesting observations and techniques for future researchers in sports studies. The changing Sporting
Landscape and Culture will be investigated within the above contexts and environs of sports brand association,
loyalty and patronage.
The purpose of the paper is to enlighten both practitioners & academics of the power of social media in enabling
the fan experience to enhance the future prosperity of sports brands and properties against competing pursuits in
the very competitive sports business markets. Further, the growing importance of fan inputs on sports properties
and their dialogue with fans, is essential for sports events and leisure pursuits to continue to increase their
identities and engagements with all fan tribes & participants.
Review of the Literature
The literature review will reflect some emerging issues in, albeit as yet a limited academic landscape, this
discipline. Social-media technologies are clearly important players in sport communication (Sanderson, 2011),
but more significantly the prevalence of much online and micro blogging evidence presents a rich arena for this
study. This will be reflected in the contexts and conceptual frameworks of this paper. Twitter is exploding in use
and in February 2012 exceeded 500 million users (Dugan2012). A more telling statistic also is that while
Facebook currently boast 900 million users, “if Twitter keeps growing at this rate, it will reach 1 billion users in
about a year and a half—but it might even be sooner than that, as its growth continues to accelerate”(Dugan,
2012). Twitter’s emergence corresponds to increased attention from Scholars, Sport Communication and Sport
Media researchers. (Browning & Sanderson, 2012, Sanderson & Kassing, 2011).
Methodology
The paper and study will be conducted using a mixed methods triangulated approach featuring a series of online
studies of fans behaviours against targeted sports properties and their fans. It will also be supplemented with
structured interviews & focus groups with sports owners, executives, key stakeholders and fan bases.
Timeframes and sampling points will also be set against this study to include opportunity for revisit ing the
research results with all participants , within an agreed future development timescale to add to the research
amplification to all vested interest groups.
2. Summary and Objectives
In summary, as Paul Booth illuminates in his seminal work on Digital fandom (2010), this paper aims to add to
the debate on describing fan culture in in a new digital environment as well as explaining and adding to the
academic landscape with new explanations for media conceptions , as demonstrated by the fans on Twitter and
similar micro blogging platforms.
