How Social Media Will Change
Sports By 2020

Social Media has transformed virtually every
industry today. The sporting industry has gone
through many transformations in its long
history, but none quite as much as how it has
transformed in the past 2 decades AND how
much more it will transform by 2020. Twitter,
FaceBook, and Youtube are social media sites
that will play a large role in this
transformation
Not that long ago, anything that had to
do with sports could only be viewed
here…
…here…
…or maybe here…
Whatever the case was, you ALWAYS had
to travel somewhere to watch a sporting
event…
Then almost a century ago, with the
invention of the television, viewing could
also be done here…
…in the home.
Today, with Social Media outlets like
YouTube, sports are still viewed in the
home but with a lot more ease and
selection.
But…
Programming is still viewed as pre-recorded
content on YouTube channels like…
In the form of highlights, pre-
recorded games/matches,
etc.
But according to very fresh developments,
YouTube will get on the ‘sports broadcasting
bandwagon’ and start streaming live sporting
events.
According to this Tech.com article and several
other circulating reports, Google is buying
Twitch, a video game live streaming site. Even
though Twitch is a video game streaming site,
the move was made because the industry the
video gaming industry is BIG business. Proven
by the existence and daily dealings of…

Aka Felix Arvid Ulf Kjellberg
Felix Arvid Ulf Kjellberg is an online gamer that
posts videos on YouTube and has almost 30
million subscribers. That’s far more than
Rihanna’s 12.5 million and Justin Bieber’s 8
million subscribers. A fact that gives more
credence to the argument: the powershift that
is forcing consumers away from ‘traditional’
media is governed more and more by ‘regular’
people like Felix.
Now what does online gaming have to do with
sports
This…
Online Gaming is an industry that generates
billions of dollars in revenue annually. Sports
broadcasting generates similar numbers
according to wipo.int and will be only a matter
of time until Google, who owns YouTube,
targets this indusrty
The only drawback to this could be that EVERY
sports broadcast would have the potential to
be replayed at anyone's discretion giving the
originators of the broadcasts a lot less ‘power’
over the content after it has been produced.
This would only be a bad thing for the
generator(sporting event producer) and not YouTube
or the consumer. YouTube obviously loves the
attention its site receives and users love the freedom
to access content whenever they want to.
According to this video, YouTube receives over
2 billion viewers PER DAY. And if every one of
those viewers just viewed 2 videos while
there, $6.83USD would be generated from the
traffic. Analytics from here were used to
generate the math. So OF COURSE they
wouldn’t mind if broadcasts were accessible,
recorded and uploaded to their own site to be
available for future viewing
What is Twitter?
Twitter is an online social media site that
enables users to post short messages (tweets)
that consists of max 140 characters per post.
Twitter also allows users to share ideas and
information instantly (About twitter, 2014).
Twitter for sports: present
• Athletes
They have a huge impact in the sports world.
Twitter provides us with privilege of communicating
with the athletes instantly; there's no need for
interview with Q & As or a one on one session. The
athletes can interact with the fans on their own
time in the comfort of their own home. Twitter also
provides us with a inside look of the athletes life by
giving the users the option of posting photos and
videos to share with the world.

The fans get up close to the action and
highlights of the game in real time. The team
also posts behind-the-scenes information to
engage with the fans on twitter.

For sports networks, incorporating Twitter into your
programming can help improve engagement and
increase followers.
Hashtags specifically are a great tool, whether used
for polling purposes or to promote a new campaign.

The players would be able to connect with their
fans through twitter DURING the games
(Belleghem, n.d).

The twitters users would have the opportunity
to post the game plan that the coach's could
possible use through-out the games (Belleghem,
n.d).

The scouts will be able to pick their athlete
through twitter by getting the media’s opinion
about each player (Belleghem, n.d).
Twitter History
Twitter began as an idea that was developed by
Dorsey Jack, Evan Williams, Biz Stone and Noah
Glass and was launched in March 2006. They
originally imagined Twitter as an SMS-based
communications platform where groups of
friends could keep tabs on what each other
were doing based on their status updates

• Twitter rapidly gained worldwide popularity,
with over 500 million registered users in 2012,
who posted 340 million tweets per day and
handled 1.6 billion search queries per day. In
2013 Twitter was one of the top ten most-
visited websites.

Privacy issues
Some of the information revealed over twitter should
remain private or should have not been published at all.
Users publishing detailed personal information and
information about their preferences and daily life is a
great opportunity for marketers.
The availability of personal information online is also an
opportunity for identity thieves, scam artists, debt
collectors and, stalkers to use the information that people
themselves have voluntarily provided in a ways harmful
for the owner of the information.
Manage Security issues
• Change your password periodically. Always
make sure you are actually on the Twitter
website before signing in or tweeting; look-
alike sites will not have a "twitter.com“
• Avoid posting information such as maiden
name, Social Security number, birthplace,
current address, passwords and other vital
statistics about your identity should be kept
off the table on Twitter.

• Smart phones enables citizens who are at any
games to report sports news more rapidly
than news teams.
Cons of Twitter
Twitter is an excellent source for news if you’re
following reputable sources, however there are
some negatives of Twitter. During the weeks of
speculation leading up to the purchase and
departure of the Atlanta Thrashers NHL team to a
group in Winnipeg, multiple fake Twitter accounts
claiming to be associated with local media outlets
reported phony news about secret meetings
between the NHL, the Mayor of Atlanta and other
Atlanta Spirit Group stakeholders about keeping the
team in Atlanta (Drexler, 2014).
Pros of Twitter
• Twitter is a beneficial communicative tool for
athletes, twitter is quite useful for more than
just news consumption. Twitter is a powerful
marketing tool for agencies to keep potential
athletes and upcoming athletes up to date on
their offers, scholarships and general
information (Drexler, 2014).
Tips for using Twitter
• Do not post your location, many people don't
realize that when they post a status update or
a tweet, they may also be revealing their
current location.
• Do not post embarrassing things you wouldn't
want shared with Your employer or family.
• Information About Your Current Job or Work-
related Projects
Prior to the existence of Facebook,
people did not have the ability to
share their life and personal
experiences online. Facebook has
truly changed the way we think,
act, and most importantly how we
communicate with one another.

By using Facebook a school can post pictures, videos, and
share status updates with followers. This is all great exposure
for athletes, the team, and the school. Furthermore, through
the use of Facebook students are able to engage and share
their personal experiences with people who are considering a
specific school to attend in the following school year.

There are challenges that go along with
the use of Facebook for athletes at
college or university.
Proper privacy regulations were not in
place to inform users of the importance
of keeping information private that
should be private.
Users began sharing all types of
information to their followers or friends
that can be seen as a wrongful act.
 For instance, if an athlete decided to go
out with friends somewhere and he
committed a wrongful act, this would be
published on Facebook and it in turn
could ruin his/her career professionally
as an athlete.
In the past, such cases would not be all
over the internet.
With the evolution of Facebook,
local communities are able to
make public pages to display
general information, current
events, and upcoming events
that will be taking place in the
community

advertise their sports
programs that will be
occurring such as recreational
soccer indoor or outdoor,
hockey, baseball etc.

that will promote the variety of

club in hopes to generate new
athletes.
 It is a perfect way to get people
involved and advertise their
services.
As social media has become increasingly important in society, it seems that
people are more likely to go on Facebook than visit a website if they showed
interest in something.

 By 2020, there will be applications
available on the Facebook page that
allows people to register directly
from their site.
 They will also establish ways that
payment can be made through the
general page
 Facebook can inform the public of
sponsorship availability, which is
great for small or large businesses to
get exposure for them. They can do
this by implementing it as one of the
main tabs on the page.
Sports has always been an
important aspect of media
because of the popularity
of sports among society.
In the past, the only way
people could gather
information about sports
was through newspaper or
radio outlets covering a
specifics team press
conference.

conferences and interviews in the comfort of their own home through
Facebook.
 Viewers will be able to watch the live stream of the athletes/teams
interview regarding a particular topic while it is happening live and
being streamed through Facebook.

their favorite sports teams and
athletes.
 It is an easy and convenient way to
see what their favorite players and
teams are doing, their interests, and
information in general. It allows
followers to get a better sense of
identity, professionally and personally.

features that exist and innovate them in a way that keeps up with the
changing technology.
 In the past, people did not have this opportunity to communicate and
follow players and teams as closely as they can now with the existence
of Facebook.

 One of the major issues is with the large
number of fan bases and people trying
to communicate with the team or player
but it might be hard for that specific
individual to respond to everyone's
inquiries.
 As a result, some followers/fans can take
it personally and begin to dislike a
particular athlete or team.
 People have the capability of lashing out
at athletes or teams if they don’t
perform

the capability for users to create
their own game with their
desired sports athletes and
teams.

created vary in terms of
the types of games that

Through video sharing(YouTube) and social

media has and will continue to revolutionize
the world of sports. With many Pros, Cons,
Security and Privacy issues, in the year 2020
sports will look and feel like nothing we’ve
ever experienced.

  • 2. Social Media has transformed virtually every industry today. The sporting industry has gone through many transformations in its long history, but none quite as much as how it has transformed in the past 2 decades AND how much more it will transform by 2020. Twitter, FaceBook, and Youtube are social media sites that will play a large role in this transformation
  • 3. Not that long ago, anything that had to do with sports could only be viewed here…
  • 6. Whatever the case was, you ALWAYS had to travel somewhere to watch a sporting event…
  • 7. Then almost a century ago, with the invention of the television, viewing could also be done here… …in the home.
  • 8. Today, with Social Media outlets like YouTube, sports are still viewed in the home but with a lot more ease and selection. But…
  • 9. Programming is still viewed as pre-recorded content on YouTube channels like… In the form of highlights, pre- recorded games/matches, etc.
  • 10. But according to very fresh developments, YouTube will get on the ‘sports broadcasting bandwagon’ and start streaming live sporting events.
  • 11. According to this Tech.com article and several other circulating reports, Google is buying Twitch, a video game live streaming site. A fact that gives more credence to the argument: the powershift that is forcing consumers away from ‘traditional’ media is governed more and more by ‘regular’ people like Felix.

  • 15. This… Online Gaming is an industry that generates billions of dollars in revenue annually. Sports broadcasting generates similar numbers according to wipo.int and will be only a matter of time until Google, who owns YouTube, targets this indusrty
  • 16. The only drawback to this could be that EVERY sports broadcast would have the potential to be replayed at anyone's discretion giving the originators of the broadcasts a lot less ‘power’ over the content after it has been produced.
  • 17. This would only be a bad thing for the generator(sporting event producer) and not YouTube or the consumer. YouTube obviously loves the attention its site receives and users love the freedom to access content whenever they want to.
  • 18. According to this video, YouTube receives over 2 billion viewers PER DAY. And if every one of those viewers just viewed 2 videos while there, $6.83USD would be generated from the traffic. Analytics from here were used to generate the math. So OF COURSE they wouldn’t mind if broadcasts were accessible, recorded and uploaded to their own site to be available for future viewing
  • 19. What is Twitter? Twitter is an online social media site that enables users to post short messages (tweets) that consists of max 140 characters per post. Twitter also allows users to share ideas and information instantly (About twitter, 2014).

Twitter provides us with privilege of communicating with the athletes instantly; there's no need for interview with Q & As or a one on one session. The athletes can interact with the fans on their own time in the comfort of their own home. Twitter also provides us with a inside look of the athletes life by giving the users the option of posting photos and videos to share with the world.

  • 26. Twitter History Twitter began as an idea that was developed by Dorsey Jack, Evan Williams, Biz Stone and Noah Glass and was launched in March 2006. They originally imagined Twitter as an SMS-based communications platform where groups of friends could keep tabs on what each other were doing based on their status updates (About twitter, 2014).
  • 27. Twitter History Cont. • Twitter rapidly gained worldwide popularity, with over 500 million registered users in 2012, who posted 340 million tweets per day and handled 1.6 billion search queries per day. In 2013 Twitter was one of the top ten most- visited websites. (About twitter, 2014).
  • 28. Privacy issues Some of the information revealed over twitter should remain private or should have not been published at all. Users publishing detailed personal information and information about their preferences and daily life is a great opportunity for marketers. The availability of personal information online is also an opportunity for identity thieves, scam artists, debt collectors and, stalkers to use the information that people themselves have voluntarily provided in a ways harmful for the owner of the information.

Always make sure you are actually on the Twitter website before signing in or tweeting; look- alike sites will not have a "twitter.com“ • Avoid posting information such as maiden name, Social Security number, birthplace, current address, passwords and other vital statistics about your identity should be kept off the table on Twitter.

  • 31. Cons of Twitter Twitter is an excellent source for news if you’re following reputable sources, however there are some negatives of Twitter. During the weeks of speculation leading up to the purchase and departure of the Atlanta Thrashers NHL team to a group in Winnipeg, multiple fake Twitter accounts claiming to be associated with local media outlets reported phony news about secret meetings between the NHL, the Mayor of Atlanta and other Atlanta Spirit Group stakeholders about keeping the team in Atlanta (Drexler, 2014).
  • 32. Pros of Twitter • Twitter is a beneficial communicative tool for athletes, twitter is quite useful for more than just news consumption. Twitter is a powerful marketing tool for agencies to keep potential athletes and upcoming athletes up to date on their offers, scholarships and general information (Drexler, 2014).

Tips for using Twitter • Do not post your location, many people don't realize that when they post a status update or a tweet, they may also be revealing their current location. • Do not post embarrassing things you wouldn't want shared with Your employer or family. • Information About Your Current Job or Work- related Projects

Furthermore, through the use of Facebook students are able to engage and share their personal experiences with people who are considering a specific school to attend in the following school year.

M.S. There are challenges that go along with the use of Facebook for athletes at college or university. Proper privacy regulations were not in place to inform users of the importance of keeping information private that should be private. Users began sharing all types of information to their followers or friends that can be seen as a wrongful act.  For instance, if an athlete decided to go out with friends somewhere and he committed a wrongful act, this would be published on Facebook and it in turn could ruin his/her career professionally as an athlete. In the past, such cases would not be all over the internet.

M.S.  By 2020, there will be applications available on the Facebook page that allows people to register directly from their site.  They will also establish ways that payment can be made through the general page  Facebook can inform the public of sponsorship availability, which is great for small or large businesses to get exposure for them. They can do this by implementing it as one of the main tabs on the page.
  • 41. Sports has always been an important aspect of media because of the popularity of sports among society. In the past, the only way people could gather information about sports was through newspaper or radio outlets covering a specifics team press conference. M.S.

M.S.  Facebook currently has applications that allows you to play games but it does not have the capability for users to create their own game with their desired sports athletes and teams.  Games that have been created vary in terms of the types of games that exist such as Candy Crush.  Presently, no sports related games have been established.

M.S.  By 2020, Facebook will have games available that will allow users to modify and choose their preferred team.  They will be able to randomly select athletes and create teams based on their fan picks.  Games will include soccer, hockey, football, basketball, baseball, rugby, golf, pool, etc.
