Absalom was the third son of King David of Israel whose name meant "Father of Peace" but who was not peaceful. He avenged the rape of his sister Tamar by killing his half-brother Amnon, then rebelled against his father David by declaring himself king in Hebron, triggering a civil war. Absalom's forces were defeated by David's army, and Absalom was killed while fleeing when his head got stuck in a tree and he was pierced with javelins by Joab, one of David's commanders, ending the rebellion.
