Abraham Lincoln was born in 1809 in Kentucky to parents Nancy Hanks and was mostly self-educated, working many jobs like surveyor and postmaster before becoming a lawyer in Illinois. He married Mary Todd and had four children, though three died young. Lincoln was elected president in 1861 and led the Union during the Civil War, issuing the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863. In April 1865, just after the Civil War ended, Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth while attending a play.
