Benigno Simeon Aquino Jr. was a Philippine Senator and opposition leader against President Ferdinand Marcos who was assassinated on August 21, 1983 upon returning home from exile in the United States. He was shot in the head at the Manila International Airport, which was later renamed in his honor. His death propelled his widow, Corazon Aquino, into the presidency and overthrew the 20-year Marcos regime. Aquino is honored as a national hero in the Philippines and August 21st is recognized as "Ninoy Aquino Day".
