The document proposes a solution to address food security among urban slum dwellers in India. The key aspects of the solution are:
1) Setting up a factory to produce nutritional biscuits and candies where slum dwellers can work in exchange for food credits.
2) Establishing community kitchens in slums where food credits can be used and surplus profits from the biscuit factory are used to operate the kitchens as a food insurance program.
3) The model combines principles of banking and insurance to provide a sustainable mechanism for eradicating hunger among slum communities.
3 Things Your Board Must Do For Accountable GovernanceOnBoard
We heard from Passageways CEO Paroon Chadha and Joe Inskeep, Associate at the Governance Coach, as they discuss the 3 Things Your Board Must Do For Accountable Governance. Joe Inskeep is chair of the Structure and Governance Committee of Shambhala, an international human development non-profit that operates over 200 centers across the globe. He has served this organization since 1983 in management, leadership training, faculty and governance roles. Joe brings a passion for Policy Governance to the task of supporting excellence in governance throughout this complex organization.
3 Things Your Board Must Do For Accountable Governance:
1. Linkage: Every board must forge an ongoing linkage with the organization’s ownership. The board must do this in order to ensure that it represents the interests of those on whose behalf it governs.
2. Policy: Accountability flow from boards that establish clear values and perspectives in written policy. We will detail the four categories of policy that all boards should concern themselves. When your board articulates clear policies, boards gain control over board performance and greater oversight of the organization.
3. Monitoring: Your board must assure accountable governance through through monitoring, ensuring organizations meet objectives while avoiding unacceptable conditions and organizational pitfalls.
These three topics are critical to achieve accountable governance, they can consume an hour together or a day each, and they allow for continued integration of other aspects of governance theory and practice.

2012 ASFS/AFHVS/SAFN Conference Global Gateways and Local Connections: Cities, Agriculture, and the Future of Food Systems
Carolyn Zezima, Director of Food and Nutrition Initiatives, Communities IMPACT Diabetes Center at Mount Sinai School of Medicine
Despite increasing recognition that fresh, healthy, local foods are scarce in low-income communities, and the creation of a number of healthy food initiatives targeting these communities, historically underserved communities still lack novel, profitable, and sustainable businesses that supply healthy, affordable and taste-satisfying foods. Bringing together the business and public health sectors, Communities IMPACT Diabetes Center at Mount Sinai School of Medicine invited business students to submit concepts and plans for viable, market and community-driven business solutions to one of our most pressing public health needs: healthy, affordable food in underserved communities. The proposed enterprises must have served communities with limited availability to healthy foods, be tailored to the particular assets and challenges in the communities, and must be developed in consultation with target communities. Proposals were judged by a panel of experts in business, food and local government. Teams competed for $25,000 in start-up funds and other business support services.

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

Kubernetes & AI - Beauty and the Beast !?! @KCD Istanbul 2024Tobias Schneck
As AI technology is pushing into IT I was wondering myself, as an “infrastructure container kubernetes guy”, how get this fancy AI technology get managed from an infrastructure operational view? Is it possible to apply our lovely cloud native principals as well? What benefit’s both technologies could bring to each other?
Let me take this questions and provide you a short journey through existing deployment models and use cases for AI software. On practical examples, we discuss what cloud/on-premise strategy we may need for applying it to our own infrastructure to get it to work from an enterprise perspective. I want to give an overview about infrastructure requirements and technologies, what could be beneficial or limiting your AI use cases in an enterprise environment. An interactive Demo will give you some insides, what approaches I got already working for real.

Nasreen Khatoun’s tiny, cramped and poorly built home is in the Bhagwanpura slum in New Delhi. Nasreen lost
two of her children to malnutrition when they were just two years old. Her daughter was the first to pass away.
“She died of acute malnutrition; she seemed to have dried up. She was just skin and bones,” says Nasreen. “Prices
have doubled of everything in the last one year. Everything is expensive the children eat only one meal a day.
There is no assistance. We don’t know what to feed our children.”

For our demand calculation, we considered a population base of 300,000. Considering a family consists of 5
members, the total number of families comes out to be 60,000. Out of that, if 70% consume biscuits and out
of these 70%, if we can capture a market size of 20%, our target number of families will be 8,400. If each
family buys 1 packet of biscuit per day, the monthly demand will be 252,000.
Re. 1 out of Rs. 4
Based on our research, we found that the cost of labour
for Rs. 4 biscuit packet is Re. 1. So, if we can get workers to
work for the biscuit factory in exchange of food credits, we
can save Re. 1 on each pack of biscuit.
