Question: 2
Differences between Two Unique Buildings in the World
The two unique buildings in the world are the Leaning Tower of Pisa and
Capital Gate. The Leaning Tower of Pisa or simply the Tower of Pisa is the
campanile, or freestanding bell tower, of the cathedral of the Italian city of
Pisa, known worldwide for its unintended tilt to one side, Leaning Tower of
Pisa is located at Piazza del Duomo, Pisa, Italy. Capital Gate is a skyscraper
in Abu Dhabi adjacent to the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre designed
with a striking lean, the owner and developer of Capital Gate is
Abu Dhabi
National Exhibitions Company and it is a man-made leaning tower, Capital
Gate is located at Abu Dhabi. Leaning Tower of Pisa and Capital Gate have
differences in three main areas such as materials used, structure and layout
and usage of space.
First of all, the differences between these two buildings are the material
used to build the building. Leaning Tower of Pisa was under construction for a
period of 200 years and was built using limestone and lime mortal, coat of
marble. The limestone used is known to withstand tremendous amounts of
pressure, which is the reason the tower is able to lean without breaking or
suffering severe structural damage. On the other hand, for Capital Gate Jeff
Schofield (2014) mentioned that Capital Gate is the first building in the world
to use a pre-cambered core with a built-in lean of 350 millimetres that has
been engineered to straighten with the addition of the upper floors. It is also
the first building in the world to use vertical post-tensioning of the core to
counter movement and support stresses created by the building’s overhang. I
am so impressed by the architect of Tower of Pisa Bonanno Pisano who is the
one to think of to use limestone to build the Pisa tower and had idea that the
qualities of limestone would play a role in preventing its ultimate collapse.
Second, the structure and layout is also the other main areas to be
compared of these two building. Shuaib Awan (2014) highlighted that The
Leaning Tower of Pisa have walls that are 4 meter thick at its base, 8 stories,
and 54.5meters high, the building is leaning to south east with 4.99degree
due to the tower site sat on soft ground composed mostly of clay, fine sand,
and shells which this make Leaning Tower of Pisa became The Seven
Wonders of the World. Moreover, the Capital Gate has 35 floors and the
height is 165m. Next, Author Unknown (2014) analysed that it is one of the
tallest buildings in Abu Dhabi and features an 18degree incline to the west,
490 foundation piles were driven 30 meters underground to support the
structure and this makes Guinness World Records certified Capital Gate as
the "World’s furthest leaning man-made tower".
The third differences of these two unique buildings are the usage of space. First, The
Capital Gate have 53,140sqm, Capital Gate is separated into two part, commercial
office and hotel. Commercial office used up about 14,396square meter, but for hotel
which is used up 25,050sqm by Hyatt Hotel in The Capital Gate. Capital Gate have
Abu Dhabi’s first Hyatt hotel – Hyatt at Capital Centre which consists of 189 hotel
rooms for visitors and exhibitors at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre. It will
also be the location for the most exclusive office space in the capital. Although Pisa
Tower only a third as high as the Washington Monument, probably the tallest bell
towers in Europe. With 207 columns ranged around eight stories, the leaning Tower
of Pisa was designed as a circular bell tower. Davies Andrew (2005)
highlighted that the first bell name’s is L'Assunta, the second bell name’s is Il
Crocifisso, the third bell’s name is San Ranieri, the fourth bell’s name is La
Terza, the fifth bell’s name is La Pasquereccia , the sixth bell’s name is Il
Vespruccio, the seventh bell’s name is Dal Pozzo.
To conclude, The Capital Gate which is leaning because of man-made while
on the other hand for leaning tower of Pisa which not a man-made tilting tower.
I felt that the engineers that responsible for the construction for the Tower of
Pisa had made a biggest mistake which is didn’t investigate the soil condition
before constructing, this is causing a very dangerous situation for the
consumer, architect nowadays strictly not to repeat what had the engineers of
Tower of Pisa made, I also very impressed by the architect of Capital Gate
that think of using pre-cambered core to support the building, and that make a
big step of achievement of human kind in construction industry. Therefore, the
3 main reasons that make these buildings unique are materials used,
structure and layout and usage of space.
