A2 media studies evaluation question 1
1.
2. In order for us to begin the construction of
our media product we first had to research
the forms and conventions of Music Videos.
Fir this We researched the media theorist
Andrew Goodwin.
3. Andrew Goodwin Stated:
- Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics
- There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals. (either;
illustrative, amplifying, contradicting and disjuncture.)
- The demands of the record label include a lot of close ups of the
artist.
- The artist may develop motifs which recur across their work (A
visual style) Brand image.
- There is frequent references to the notion of looking, and
particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female form.
- There are often intertextual references (to films, TV
programmes and other media, particularly ones that refer to
society).
4. After Researching Andrew Goodwin, and
finding out that Music videos demonstrate
genre specific characteristics. We begun to
research the forms and conventions of our
chosen music video genre.
As we decided we were goanna do the
Queen hit “I Want To Break Free” we began
to research the conventions of a pop-rock
music video.
5. Pop-Rock artists tend to cater to their target
audience of teens to young adults, both male
and female a like. Some refer to this genre
as soft rock, which is why it appeals to such
a wide range of individuals, people who can
relate to the story that’s being told.
Pop-Rock videos tend to be a mix of three
types of narratives; Performance, narrative
and concept.
6. Most videos have clips of the artist
performing, with cuts back to the narrative.
The story Is generally based on issues and
everyday life.
The clothing the band wear is usually
fashionable, but not as revealing as a pop
artist and not as dark as a rock artist.
They use appropriate locations, with ambient
lighting.
7. - In our music video we used an appropriate
location, to coincide with our concept of
parodying TV dramas such as Glee and Skins.
- We also had plenty of close ups of the group
performing.
- We put a lot of focus into our Mise en scene;
especially our costumes and make up.
8. We challenged the voyeuristic view of
women by having the focus put on the male
form in a female dress.
Instead of having the group, performing
together, we split up into our own storylines.
