This document summarizes a student lab report on characterizing proton exchange membrane fuel cells. The students tested a hydrogen fuel cell and a 3% methanol fuel cell. Their results showed the hydrogen fuel cell generated a greater electric potential, consistent with published data. The report provides background on fuel cells and PEM fuel cells. It describes the chemical reactions in hydrogen and methanol fuel cells. Equations are given for calculating cell potential and Faraday efficiency. Graphs and losses in fuel cell performance are also discussed.
