repaired the altar of the LORD which had
been torn down. Elijah took twelve stones,
one for each of the tribes descended from
Jacob, to whom the word of the LORD had
come, saying, “Your name shall be Israel.”
With the stones he built an altar in the
name of the LORD,

• and he dug a trench around it large enough
to hold two seahs of seed. He arranged the
wood, cut the bull into pieces and laid it on
the wood. Then he said to them, “Fill four
large jars with water and pour it on the
offering and on the wood.” “Do it again,” he
said, and they did it again. “Do it a third
time,” he ordered, and they did it the third
time. The water ran down around the altar
and even filled the trench.

• At the time of sacrifice, the prophet Elijah
stepped forward and prayed: “LORD, the
God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, let it be
known today that you are God in Israel and
that I am your servant and have done all
these things at your command. Answer
me, LORD, answer me, so these people will
know that you, LORD, are God, and that
you are turning their hearts back again.”

4. 1 Kings 18:30-40
• Then the fire of the LORD fell and burned up
the sacrifice, the wood, the stones and the
soil, and also licked up the water in the
trench. When all the people saw this, they
fell prostrate and cried, “The LORD he is God!
The LORD he is God!” Then Elijah
commanded them, “Seize the prophets of
Baal. Don’t let anyone get away!” They seized
them, and Elijah had them brought down to
the Kishon Valley and slaughtered there.

5. 2 Kings 2:8-14
• Elijah took his cloak, rolled it up and struck
the water with it. The water divided to the
right and to the left, and the two of them
crossed over on dry ground. When they had
crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, “Tell me, what
can I do for you before I am taken from you?”
“Let me inherit a double portion of your
spirit,” Elisha replied. “You have asked a
difficult thing,” Elijah said, “yet if you see me
when I am taken from you, it will be yours
otherwise, it will not.”

6. 2 Kings 2:8-14
• As they were walking along and talking
together, suddenly a chariot of fire and horses
of fire appeared and separated the two of
them, and Elijah went up to heaven in a
whirlwind. Elisha saw this and cried out, “My
father! Mt father! The chariots and horsemen
of Israel!” And Elisha saw him no more. Then
he took hold of his garment and tore it into
two. Elisha then picked up Elijah’s cloak that
had fallen from him and went back and stood
on the bank of the Jordan.

• He took the cloak that had fallen from Elijah
and struck the water with it. “Where now is
the LORD, the God of Elijah?” he asked.
When he struck the water, it divided to the
right and to the left, and he crossed over.
The company of the prophets from Jericho,
who were watching, said, “The spirit of Elijah
is resting on Elisha.” And they went to meet
him and bowed to the ground before him.

• 1 Kings 19:2-4 If by this time tomorrow I do not
make your life like … Elijah was afraid and ran
for his life … He came to a broom bush, sat
down under it and prayed that he might die. “I
have had enough, LORD,” he said. “Take my life;
I am no better than my ancestors.”
• 2 Kings 2:14 He took the cloak that had fallen
from Elijah and struck the water with it. “Where
now is the LORD, the God of Elijah?” he asked.

3. Same mandate but different directions.
• 1 Kings 19:15 The LORD said to him, “Go back
the way you came, and go to the Desert of
Damascus. When you get there, anoint Hazael
king over Aram. Also anoint Jehu son of Nimshi
king over Israel, and anoint Elisha son of
Shaphat ……. to succeed you as prophet.”
• 2 Kings 2:14-15 When he struck the water, it
divided to the right and to the left, and he
crossed over. The company of the prophets
from Jericho, who were watching said, “The
spirit of Elijah is resting on Elisha.”
