The story describes a confrontation between the prophet Elias and the prophets of the false god Baal. Elias challenges the prophets of Baal to a contest on Mount Carmel to determine whose god is real. They build altars and call on their gods, but the prophets of Baal's altar remains untouched while fire from heaven consumes Elias's altar. The people declare that the Lord is God. Elias then has the prophets of Baal killed for their false worship.

In this study I have explored a number of resources to glean information on the god Baal in order to understand why this god has been such a rival of the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. How can it be that this god, who is no god at all, could be such a rival to Jehovah that God's people could not be kept from worshiping him, rather than the God who brought them out of Egypt, and did all kinds of amazing miracles on their behalf? The battles to stop the people from this false idolatry seem endless as we read the Old Testament. They may succeed for awhile, but soon the people are back following the worship of this enemy to Jehovah. What is the secret to the power of this god made up by the minds of pagans? How could the worship of this deity become so popular that the only way God could eliminate it was to send his people in great judgment out of the Promised Land that he had led them into? The goal of this study is to make sense of this mystery.

This presentation gives three practical steps, from a Christian counseling perspective, to take to begin to win spiritual mind battles in the aftermath of adultery.
It is important to know that God made us to have emotions, therefore, having emotions in itself, is not a sin. However, if we are not careful, satan can manipulate our emotions, such as anger, and cause us to hate or kill another person! Satan can lead one to believe that the lust they have is really “love,” justifying acts of adultery, fornication and sodomy.

1 In Chapter 18 of 1 Kings, the dialogue between King Ahab and Elijah is mentioned. Can you see whether there is a situation of shirking responsibility? 18:17-18
2 In Chapter 18, we saw that Elijah performed a miracle, and the people all said that Jehovah is God. Can a miracle make people believe in God? If so, what scriptures support your argument?
3 What kind of attributes of God can you see in chapter 19, 19:4-9
4 How God shows His glory and mercy in Chapter 20 20:13, 18, 42
5 In chapter 21 we see Jezebel being wicked, but are the others innocent? How do you think this can be avoided? 21:8-10
6 In chapter 22, did King Ahab believe in God? Can you see the manifestation of God's sovereignty in it? 22:34-35
7 In the first chapter of 2 Kings, it is mentioned that Elijah begged God to send fire from heaven and burned 102 people. What do you think?

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

1. The Story of Elias and the
Prophets of Baal
3 Kings 18
2. Cast:
Achab: the King
Abdias: the governor of Achab’s house
Elias: a holy prophet of God
Jezabel: Achab’s wife
Prophets of Baal: “prophets” of the fake god Baal
The Israelites: people under Achab, who no longer know the true God
Note: Jezabel was the daughter of the King of Tyre, with which Israel had
a treaty. When Achab married Jezabel, she brought one of her homeland’s
customs with her to Israel – the worship of the god Baal.
3. Abdias came to his master, the King Achab.
“Yes?” Achab asked. “What is it?”
“Master,” said Abdias, most humbly. “The prophet
Elias is waiting outside and wishes to speak to you.”
So Achab went out to talk to Elias.
“What is it that you want?” Achab asked. “Are you
the one who has been troubling Israel?”
- 3 Kings 18:16-17
4.
5. Elias replied, “I have not troubling
Israel. Rather, it is you, who have
forgotten the commandments of
the Lord, and have followed the
god Baal.”
- 3 Kings 18:18
6.
7. Elias continued: “But let’s not argue about
this. Send for the four hundred and fifty
prophets of Baal, who dine at your wife
Jezabel’s table, and tell them to come to
Mount Carmel.”
So Achab sent the message to all the
people of Israel, and sent the four hundred
and fifty prophets to Mount Carmel.
- 3 Kings 18:19-20
8.
9. At Mount Carmel, Elias stood before the people and asked them, “Why do
you act unconcerned and do nothing? You have to choose between the Lord
God and Baal.”
The Israelites said nothing, feeling uncomfortable.
So Elias spoke up again. “I am the only prophet left of the Lord, but there are
four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal. Give us two calves, and the prophets
of Baal will choose one, cut it into pieces, and lay it upon wood on an altar.
But there must be no fire under the wood. Then I will prepare the other
calf, and put no fire under it, either. Then the prophets of Baal will call upon
their god and I will call upon the Lord God. Whichever God answers, He will
be God.”
The people agreed: “That is fair.”
- 3 Kings 18:21-25
10.
11. The prophets of Baal chose a calf and prepared it. Then
they began to call upon the name of Baal. They called
from the morning until the afternoon: “O Baal, hear
us!” But nothing happened. At noon, Elias mocked the
prophets of Baal: “Shout louder, for Baal is a god, and
perhaps he is talking with someone, or he is an inn, or
on a journey, or perhaps he is asleep, and needs to be
awakened.” So the prophets of Baal shouted
louder, and cut themselves with knives, until they were
all covered with blood.
- 3 Kings 18:26-28
12.
13. When still nothing happened, Elias called the Israelites
to him. He repaired the old altar of the Lord, and then
poured seven buckets of water over the offering and
the altar, so that it would seem even more impossible
to the Israelites for the fire to be lit.
Then Elias knelt down and prayed to God. Almost right
after he finished praying, a fire came down from
Heaven and consumed the offering, and even licked
upon the water left around the altar.
- 3 Kings 18:29-38
14.
15. And then the people fell down on their faces, crying:
“The Lord is God! The Lord is God!”
- 3 Kings 18:39
16.
17. Elias told the Israelites to take the prophets of Baal, and
kill them – their just punishment.
- 3 Kings 18:40
