Elijah challenges the prophets of Baal to a contest on Mount Carmel to determine whose god is truly God. Elijah has the people of Israel pour water over a sacrifice three times to show it is God, not Baal, who controls both fire and water. When Elijah prays, fire falls from heaven and consumes the sacrifice, causing the people to acknowledge that the Lord is God. However, Jezebel threatens Elijah's life in response, causing him to flee into the wilderness where God appears to him through a gentle whisper rather than the dramatic events of wind, earthquake and fire.
