This document proposes a design for an inexpensive, robust wind meter that uses four main components: 1) an inexpensive turbine, 2) weather protection casing, 3) small pager motor generator, and 4) single-chip microcontroller. The total cost would be around $0.50. Specific suppliers and part numbers are provided for prototyping the design, which involves 3D printing the turbine casing, sourcing the pager motor, and using an ATmel TinyAVR microcontroller to measure and output wind speed data from the generator. Code examples and links are given to test and implement the proposed low-cost wind meter solution.
