GRANT STRATEGIES
 If you have limited time to dedicate to grant-writing, focusing on
major local grantmakers is a great strategy.
Local grantmakers are a limited resource and Muncie has a very
large number of nonprofits competing for them. If you think
nationally and look for grants that fit your subject area, you may find
a great opportunity.
5% of that $54 million dollars came from 60 out-of-state
grantmakers. Local is best, but there’s a whole wide world of
resources out there. $2.9 million came into Muncie from out-of-state
grants in the last five years.
6% of that $54 million dollars came from 79 grantmakers that gave
to only ONE Muncie organization each. Applying for a long-shot grant
can pay off! That’s $3.4 million in funds!
THINK STRATEGICALLY
 In addition to researching local organizations to find out where
they’ve been successful with grant funding, consider looking up
organizations that have a similar goal/mission to yours. This will help
you to find niche grantmakers who are specifically interested in your
cause.

Editor's Notes

  • #2 This presentation will be MUCH shorter than the first. The first covered the basics on how to find information for yourself, but in this presentation I did some of the legwork for you and compiled data that is relevant to Muncie nonprofits, specifically. Here we’re going to look at how much grant funding is coming into Muncie, which organizations are getting it, which grantmakers are giving it out – and how you can get a piece of that funding for yourself. We’ll also talk briefly about other research strategies beyond the local focus – like researching organizations that are thematically similar to your own instead of geographically similar.
  • #8 Alright, so who are the major grantees? We’ve got BSU, BSU Foundation, and Minnetrista. Who’s the next biggest? Just so you know this is based solely on date from the Foundation Directory. That means teeny-tiny local funds and scholarships will not show up here. If you got an Altrusa grant, for example, it won’t show up. Major grants only.
  • #10 These are the big dogs in Muncie. Why are they the big dogs? Because (1) they have the staff and resources to pursue grants vigorously and often and (2) because of reason 1 they are able to step outside of the local grants and also take some risks on BIG grants from other cities and states.
  • #11 Here are some of the medium-sized grantees. These groups received between $50k and $250k in funding just from grants in the last five years.
  • #12 And here are some of the smaller grant recipients. All these groups got less than $50k in grant funding over a five year period.
  • #13 Alright, so here’s the big question. Where are these folks getting their money, and how can I use that information to get some money for my group?
  • #14 Here are the major grantmakers giving to Muncie. All these groups have given over $50k to Muncie nonprofits, BUT (and that’s a big but) that doesn’t mean all these grantmakers will consider you – some of the big awards came from groups that the Big Three pursued who might not be a good fit at all for your nonprofit and who don’t normally give locally. So what’s another way we could look at this data?
  • #15 How about we look at the grantmakers who have given to the highest number of organizations in Muncie? Its not the dollar amount that matters most, it’s the number of groups in town they’re giving to. If they give to lots of local groups, that tells you this is either 1) a local grantmaker that gives in Muncie often or 2) a grantmaker who gives LOTS of grants and a bunch just happened to end up coming to Muncie.
  • #16 Alright, so what’s the moral of the story? Your safe bet is to look at those major grantmakers and focus your attention on them. If you have limited time and resources to dedicate to grant-writing, then that’s what you should do. But that doesn’t mean you should completely discount other grantmakers you might find through the Foundation Center. Taking a risk can lead to great rewards, so it’s worth it to try if you have the time. Use other local nonprofits as a guide. This information is publicly available and there’s no reason that you shouldn’t utilize it in your grant-seeking strategy. Lets do a local search – someone name a mid-sized local nonprofit and I’ll show you how to search for their grantee history.
  • #17 For example, a nonprofit like Muncie ARF will likely apply for local grants, but they also have a niche focus that probably has lots of state and national level grant opportunities, if they just know where to look. If they look up the official name of an organization that does similar work like PAWS of Dearborn County or Partners for Animal Welfare, they may find some grants they weren’t aware of. Lets do an example search. Remember you need to have the official name that the grantee files under in order to search for them effectively. That is the biggest stumbling block for strategic searching like this.
