Polar bears primarily live in the Arctic regions of several northern countries. They are well adapted to life on sea ice but are threatened by habitat loss due to climate change reducing sea ice. Other threats include environmental contaminants accumulating in the Arctic food chain, interactions with human development, and over-hunting in some areas. While protections exist, such as the Marine Mammal Protection Act and international agreements, more urgent action is needed to conserve polar bear populations and their sea ice habitat to prevent their decline.
