This document provides a summary of a 5-year vermicomposting pilot program in Middletown, CT that composted food scraps from local institutions using worms. Over the course of the program, nearly 9,000 pounds of food waste was diverted from disposal. The program faced challenges with maintaining consistent food waste sources and transportation. Educational activities like school field trips to the greenhouse were very successful. Moving forward, the city hopes to expand the program by pre-composting food waste to reduce flies and finding a community group to assist with operations.
