A Code of Conduct for Presenters?
by www.allthingspresentations.eu
A dictionary defines “code of conduct” as a set of principles and expectations that are
considered binding on any person who is a member of a particular group or organisation. It
further describes it as a list of responsibilities and practices required by an individual who is
a member of a group or an organization.
In the broader sense of the term then, a code of conduct for presenters should list what the
presenter must pay attention to in order to perform efficiently and meet the audience
expectations.
1. Accuracy: The presenter is required to provide a presentation which uses or refers
to content –in any form or shape – truthfully and fairly.
2. Advocacy: The presenter is required to provide a presentation which avoids content
–in any form or shape – considered hate provoking, denigrating or insulting, in
particular, with reference to ethnicity, nationality, race, gender, religion, age, social
status, physical or mental disability.
3. Effects: The presenter is required to provide a presentation which avoids sound and
visual effects –in any form or shape – calculated to mislead, shock or alarm the
audience.
4. Fairness: The presenter is required to provide a presentation which avoids the use of
inaccurate, distorted or misleading information.
5. Good Taste: The presenter is required to provide a presentation which avoids
content –in any form or shape – considered indecent, obscene and unacceptable.
6. Impartiality: The presenter is required to provide a presentation which encourages
the widest possible airing of views.
7. Personal Point of View: The presenter is required to provide a presentation which,
when including personal points of view, respects facts and rests upon proper
evidence.
8. Quality: The presenter is required to provide a presentation which is of high quality
both in terms of content as well as form.
9. Reference: The presenter is required to provide a presentation which avoids
misleading the audience in a way which would be unfair to those referred to in the
presentation.
10. Responsibility: The presenter is required to provide a presentation which has been
well researched, prepared and rehearsed.
11. Suitability: The presenter is required to provide a presentation which avoids content
–in any form or shape – which is considered inappropriate for young people and
children. In particular the material included should impart sound moral and social
values, develop a healthy personality, character and intelligence.
The points above are listed alphabetically. They are not listed by importance; this would be
the task of the individual presenter. The list is by no means exhaustive or the points are not
engraved in stone. Presenters may need to develop a more personal code of conduct based
on their particular personal, professional or social environment as well as their expectations
as speakers and listeners.
