This talk starts with a brief overview of the language, then explains how Haskell is evaluated and how it deals with non-determinism and side effects using only pure functions. The suitability of Haskell for real world data science is then discussed, along with some examples of its users, a small Haskell-powered visualization, and an overview of useful packages for data science. Finally, Accelerate is introduced, an embedded DSL for array computations on the GPU, and an ongoing attempt to use it as the basis for a deep learning package.

Next Insurance was founded at the beginning of 2016, and the first lines of its production code started accumulating in May 2016. As the first back-end developer, I started writing in Java and out of curiosity was experimenting with Kotlin. Kotlin had just seen its 1.0 release two months earlier. A year later, Next Insurance’s entire back-end development team is writing all the code in Kotlin. We already have 8 microservices and several AWS lambda functions all written in Kotlin. Migration from 1.0.x to Kotlin 1.1 was smooth, and the developers are happy. This presentation covers the language’s features and why I think it is awesome and fits perfectly with my company’s architecture.

1. Computer organization refers to how the major components of a computer system (processor, memory, I/O devices) work together and are interconnected. It examines the basic digital circuits that make up the system.
2. Memory capacity has been doubling every 2 years, resulting in a 64x increase in capacity from 1996 to now. Hard disk capacity doubles every year, leading to a 250x increase over the last decade.

Apache Flink performs with low latency but can also scale to great heights. Gelly is Flink’s laboratory for building and tuning scalable graph algorithms and analytics. In this talk we’ll discuss writing algorithms optimized for the Flink architecture, assembling and configuring a cloud compute cluster, and boosting performance through benchmarking and system profiling. This talk will cover recent developments in the Gelly library to include scalable graph generators and a mixed collection of modular algorithms written with native Flink operators. We’ll think like a data stream, keep a cool cache, and send the garbage collector on holiday. To this we’ll add a lightweight benchmarking harness to stress and validate core Flink and to identify and refactor hot code with aplomb.

The global energy transition is placing new and unprecedented demands on Distribution System Operators (DSOs). Alongside upgrades to grid capacity, processes such as digitization, capacity optimization, and congestion management are becoming vital for delivering reliable services.
Power Grid Model is an open source project from Linux Foundation Energy and provides a calculation engine that is increasingly essential for DSOs. It offers a standards-based foundation enabling real-time power systems analysis, simulations of electrical power grids, and sophisticated what-if analysis. In addition, it enables in-depth studies and analysis of the electrical power grid’s behavior and performance. This comprehensive model incorporates essential factors such as power generation capacity, electrical losses, voltage levels, power flows, and system stability.
Power Grid Model is currently being applied in a wide variety of use cases, including grid planning, expansion, reliability, and congestion studies. It can also help in analyzing the impact of renewable energy integration, assessing the effects of disturbances or faults, and developing strategies for grid control and optimization.
