The SANTED Multilingual Project in Nursing aims to develop bilingual teaching and learning materials in English and isiZulu for nursing students at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. The objectives are to provide nursing professionals competent in both English and isiZulu, develop isiZulu-speaking professionals confident in practicing in their mother tongue, and equip non-isiZulu speakers to communicate with isiZulu patients. In the first year, course materials will be translated and non-isiZulu lecturers will receive basic language training, followed by subject-specific modules. Interpreters will assist classes and clinical supervision. Capacity building for bilingual education will continue in subsequent years with additional translations and advanced language courses for lecturers.
