1. Magazine ideology
My product is aimed at teenagers and young adults. I would like to inform teenagers about rock and broaden the knowledge of
adults. The name of magazine is Upfront and the idea behind the name is that I want the consumer to feel involved in the magazine
and feel a part of something. I will draw inspiration from NME, Kerrang and Q because these magazines include the genre I have
chosen which is rock/indie. The layout could also be based on the layout from these. My magazine will be different from other
magazines because I will/won’t be challenging the codes and conventions of magazines. The selling points behind my magazine will
be that it is unique and it will have a variety of things available this has been inspired from my questionnaire research and the needs
of consumers. There will be space for my magazine in the market because my magazine will create a new era of magazines.
Market research
When I was creating my questionnaire first I started with a broad overview of genres and then I became specific to my genre of my
magazine. 43% of 23 people (10) prefer indie over Rock. Then question five asked if the audience would be more persuaded to buy a
magazine if they had promotional codes and people didn't’t mind if there were or were not any used.
2. What I have learnt about technologies of
constructing the product?
‘Photoshop’
Before I started the media course, I’d never used Photoshop before. I felt inexperienced towards the software but slowly got
used to it by carrying out a practice task- creating a front cover (which is shown below) The teacher went step by step through
all the features (like cropping, magnetic and lasso tool) that are included in Photoshop which really helped me to understand
Photoshop. When creating a magazine Photoshop CS5 offers so much potential and variation which can be used. There’s so
much that can be done on Photoshop and there are so many effects, I used many effects, for example; blur (I used the blur tool
to blur the lead singers spots to create a more clean appearance), smudge, cropping, on the front cover there's a plus sign I
created by putting two rectangles together and I used typography effects on the mast head (front cover and double page
spread). There are some really good features on Photoshop for example when starting to make a front cover there is a
background which automatically locks it self so it can’t be moved or edited. When using another software Microsoft Publisher. In
contrast for Photoshop when adding anything new (textbox, shape, image) its is inserted on a layer which makes it easier to
move, as everything else stays still.er if you wanted to move/ align an image everything would move on the page which can be
irritating.
This was the first
magazine that I
created using the
software Photoshop.
Personally I think it
looks atrocious with
the various fonts
and colour scheme
which doesn’t stand This is showing the technique which can be
out and is dull. This used on Photoshop. It’s called ‘blur’ and
was a eye opener ‘smudge’. It has made a phenomenal
for me, as it difference to the image as it looks more
informed me what presentable and it looks professional but it
not to do when doesn’t make it look like it has been too
creating a Photoshoped and edited, this creates a
magazine. clean tidy image.
3. What I have learnt about technologies of
constructing the product?
‘Microsoft Word/Zoomerang’
This is one of the images I used to inspire an album cover, made on Microsoft Word. This album cover was
designed for the band ‘Rockband 2’.
This is the image that I started with and then I removed the background. Then on Google I looked at rock band
album covers to gather some ideas. Then I cropped the image and put the background image on the page and then
formatted it. Then I went to picture tolls, then removed the background and then I used artistic filtering. The final
design is called ‘Photocopy effect’ and then I placed it on top of the image and then I arranged the image and sent it
to the back.
Zoomerang is a free and comprehensive way to create a questionnaire or poll and also analyze the results and share it
on social networking site. We were given given the task to create a questionnaire about the music magazine and
distribute it to a large audience via a social networking site and the audience gave me feedback about my magazine.
