3. 9 Mark Question
• One question type that you will be expected to do at National 5 level
is a 9 mark ‘IFACE’ question.
• Do not be stressed out about the number of marks available for this
question, they are easy to do!
• The question we are going to attempt today, together is:

Just like how you use ABC(D) and JSR for other exam style questions. For this style of question
we use (IFACE).
IFACE translates as:
Introduction
• * Write an introduction to your essay (describe a background fact or state the factors to be
discussed)
Factor
• Discuss the Factor named in the question, explaining why it is important (2/3 facts required).
Alternative
• Discuss Alternative factors by saying “However…” and then outline another point of
view/factor. Give 2/3 facts about these.
Conclusion
• Clearly answer the question: What was the main factor? or Was it successful?
Evidence
• Give one piece of Evidence to support your conclusion

8. After the Nazi party gained power in 1933 and transformed Germany into a totalitarian state. To
ensure that they held onto power they introduced a variety of economic policies such as building
the autobahns and social policies such as strength through joy (KDF) to not just maintain power
but to continue their popularity. This will discuss the question about whether or not it was these
economic policies that contributed to the Nazis maintaining power between 1933-1939. (1 Mark)
Hitler introduced a variety of economic policies framed around his two goals of full employment
and Autarky which suggested that Germany would not need to rely on any other country.
Policies such as the creation of the Autobahn was successful as it ensured that 80,000 people
were employed (1 mark ).Even those who were employed benefitted from the Nazi policies with
the ‘beauty of work scheme’ designed to make workplaces more appealing with freshened up
factories and canteens being introduced to increase worker happiness (1 mark). Hitler also,
according to the Nazi records did manage to decrease the unemployment rate from 6 million to 0
in the period 1933-1939 (1 Mark) however it must be noted that many people just took jobs that
were previously allocated to Jews and women.

9. There were other reasons why the Nazi party maintained power between
1933-1939 (1 Mark). They built upon increased worker happiness and
productivity with a variety of social policies such as offering worker holidays
through the KDF Strength through joy scheme with 30 million taking
advantage of this scheme. (1 Mark). Perhaps most crucial of all the Nazi
Party maintained power through fear, the SS State security service in
particular struck fear into the heart of many Germans who dared not step
out of line. (1 Mark). Connected to the fear of the SS was the fear of getting
sent to a concentration camps such as that in Dachau which was the most
feared tool of the Nazi Government. (1 Mark).
To conclusion, while it is true the Nazi economic policies contributed to the
Nazi party maintaining power between 1933-1939 in particular surrounding
giving white Germans a job the key reason why they maintained power was
because of the fear they created (1 Mark). The SS in particular through their
aim of eliminating all opposition to Hitler created fear in the German
population that helped Hitler maintain power. (1 Mark)
