In the 60’s, America and the world witnessed and enjoyed a continuation of the expansion of the economy, brought about by tax cuts initiated under John F. Kennedy and the relative peace between the Korean and Vietnam Wars (Perry & Tobin, 2000).
The increase in government in the economy increased lead to a larger labor force (National Archives, 2009).
By 1970 the government employed 3.9 percent of the labor force, as compared to 2.4 percent in 1940 (National Archives, 2009).
The government became more actively involved with the economy, spending money for research, and military equipment for the Vietnam war (National Archives, 2009). In the 1960’s the government expanded Social Security benefits creating a society of entitlement (National Archives, 2009).
