The following list of predictions (Figure 1) explores the state of IoT in 2019 and covering IoT impact on many aspects business and technology including Digital Transformation, Blockchain, AI, and 5G.
New trends of IoT in 2018 and beyond (SJSU Conference ) Ahmed Banafa
The Internet of things (IoT) is growing rapidly and 2018 will be a fascinating year for the IoT industry. IoT technology continues to evolve at an incredibly rapid pace. Consumers and businesses alike are anticipating the next big innovation. They are all set to embrace the ground-breaking impact of the Internet of Things on our lives like ATMs that report crimes around them, forks that tell you if you are eating fast, or IP address for each organ of your body for doctors to connect and check
Understanding the different building blocks of IoT, identifying the areas of vulnerability in each block and exploring technologies needed to counter each of the weaknesses are essential in dealing with the security issue of IoT.
In this seminar you will listen to in depth explanation of the hottest technologies in 2019 and beyond. Prof. Banafa will discuss each technology its applications and challenges with real life cases. The interaction among all the four technology will be explored with focus on future trends in each of technology. As all technologies can be summarized in one word IBAC (IoT, Blockchain, AI, Cybersecurity) they can be explained with the following words: IoT: senses, Blockchain: remembers, AI: thinks, and Cybersecurity: protects.
IoT, AI and Blockchain: Catalysts for Digital TransformationAhmed Banafa
The digital revolution has brought with it a new way of thinking about manufacturing and operations. Emerging challenges associated with logistics and energy costs are influencing global production and associated distribution decisions. Significant advances in technology, including big data and analytics, AI, Internet of Things, robotics and additive manufacturing, are shifting the capabilities and value proposition of global manufacturing. In response, manufacturing and operations require a digital renovation: the value chain must be redesigned and retooled and the workforce retrained. Total delivered cost must be analyzed to determine the best places to locate sources of supply, manufacturing and assembly operations around the world. In other words we need a digital transformation.
Welcome to the world of Internet of Things wherein a glut of devices are connected to the internet which emanates massive amounts of data. But we have many hoops to jump before we can claim that crown starting with a huge number of devices lacking unified platform with serious issues of security standards threating the very progress of IoT.

The Blockchain Wave in 2019 and BeyondAhmed Banafa
We’re still in the early days of Blockchain as a technology, and so we’re yet to see the full impact that it will have on the world that we live in. Still, it’s already showing potential across a range of industries and started to enter the public consciousness, so the real question is what will happen when Blockchain technology starts to mature.
Blockchain, the "distributed ledger" technology, has emerged as an object of intense interest in the tech industry and beyond.
Blockchain technology offers a way of recording transactions or any digital interaction in a way that is designed to be secure, transparent, highly resistant to outages, auditable, and efficient; as such, it carries the possibility of disrupting industries and enabling new business models.

IoT and Blockchain are two evolving technologies which are gradually realizing immense potential to be a decisive part of future of mankind ecosystem. Blockchain and IoT, both are envisaged to bring in a plethora of advantages including better control, communication, transparency and more significantly realizing digital trust without any third party intervention. Both of these technologieshave immense potential for exploitation in a smart nation concept. The advantages being realized are potent enough for definite implementation ahead but they come with an austere package of security concerns which if not taken care at the design stage can lead to pandemonium beyond control because of the billion plus connected things. Even atdesign stage, one can appreciate that it will be envisaging beyond control to close all security vulnerabilities and zero day’s exploits of future. But then Blockchain is an inexpugnable solution to shut all these securities imperils. Second line of defense for cybersecurity : BlockchainAhmed Banafa
With the fact that cybercrime and cyber security attacks hardly seem to be out of the news these days and the threat is growing globally.
Nobody would appear immune to malicious and offensive acts targeting computer networks, infrastructures and personal computer devices.
Firms clearly must invest to stay resilient.
Gauging the exact size of cybercrime and putting a precise US dollar value on it is nonetheless tricky.

IoT Standardization and Implementation ChallengesAhmed Banafa
The rapid evolution of the IoT market has caused an explosion in the number and variety of IoT solutions.
Additionally, large amounts of funding are being deployed at IoT startups.
Consequently, the focus of the industry has been on manufacturing and producing the right types of hardware to enable those solutions.
In the coming years, IoT will look completely different than it does today. IoT is a greenfield market.
New players, with new business models, approaches, and solutions, can appear out of nowhere and overtake incumbents.
An Analysis of the Architecture of the Internet of Things.pdfCIOWomenMagazine
As we all know internet of things is a system of interrelated and inter-connected objects. These objects are able to collect and transfer data via a wireless network without any human intervention.
The Internet of Things (IoT) is a concept that describes a totally interconnected world. It’s a world where devices of every shape and size are manufactured with “smart” capabilities that allow them to communicate and interact with other devices, exchange data, make autonomous decisions and perform useful tasks based on preset conditions.
IoT is expected to gross over $19 trillion over the next few years. However, the problem is that these ‘things’ have myths surrounding them, some of which are impacting how organizations develop the apps to support them.
Any new technology involves a certain amount of uncertainty and business risk. In the case of the Internet of Things, however, many of the risks have been exaggerated or misrepresented. While the IoT vision will take years to mature fully, the building blocks to begin this process are already in place.
Key hardware and software are either available today or under development; stakeholders need to address security and privacy concerns, and collaborate to implement the open standards that will make the IoT safe, secure, reliable and interoperable, and allow the delivery of secured services as seamlessly as possible.

11 things IT leaders need to know about the internet of things WGroup
The Internet of Things (IoT) is the next phase in the evolution of the Internet. More than 100 devices connect to the Internet every second. By 2020, Cisco estimates that number to be more than 250 per second. Morgan Stanley projects the Internet will be loaded with 75 billion devices by the end of the decade. This document discusses WGroup's perspective on what 11 things IT leaders need to know about IoT.
This presentation highlights the definition of IoT, various applications of IoT, the Role of IoT in building smart cities, and the challenges and opportunities of Implementing IoT for smart cities.
In this presentation, Ayush introduces IoT and associated trends. Ayush wants to work on the standardization part of IoT and as an example he talks about Constrained Application Protocol (CoAP).
The Internet Of Things will have an increasing impact to all industries and health and fitness are no exception. This definitive guide provides a blue print for the things we all need to keep in mind as we adopt the IOT revolution.
The Convergence of 5G and Internet of Things (IoT) is the next natural move for two advance technologies built to make users lives convenient, easier and more productive. But before talking about how they will unite we need to understand each of the two technologies.
Simply defined; 5G is the next-generation cellular network compared to 4G, the current standard, which offers speeds ranging from 7 Mbps to 17 Mbps for upload and 12 Mbps to 36 Mbps for download, 5G transmission speeds may be as high as 20 Gbps. Latency will also be close to 10% of 4G transmission, and the number of devices that can be connected scales up significantly which warranted the convergence with IoT.
Quantum computers are designed to perform tasks much more accurately and efficiently than conventional computers, providing developers with a new tool for specific applications.
It is clear in the short-term that quantum computers will not replace their traditional counterparts; instead, they will require classical computers to support their specialized abilities, such as systems optimization.
The convergence of IoT and Quantum ComputingAhmed Banafa
One of the top candidates to help in securing IoT is Quantum Computing, while the idea of convergence of IoT and Quantum Computing is not a new topic, it was discussed in many works of literature and covered by various researchers, but nothing is close to practical applications so far.
Quantum Computing is not ready yet, it is years away from deployment on a commercial scale.
Building a quantum internet is a key ambition for many countries around the world, such a breakthrough will give them competitive advantage in a promising disruptive technology, and opens a new world of innovations and unlimited possibilities.
COVID-19 has impacted countries, communities, and individuals in countless ways, from business and school closures to job losses not to undermined loss of lives.
Quantum teleportation is a technique for transferring quantum information from a sender at one location to a receiver some distance away.
While teleportation is portrayed in science fiction as a means to transfer physical objects from one location to the next, quantum teleportation only transfers quantum information.
The Zero Trust Model of information #security simplifies how #information security is conceptualized by assuming there are no longer “trusted” interfaces, applications, traffic, networks, or users. It takes the old model— “trust but verify”—and inverts it, because recent breaches have proven that when an organization trusts, it doesn’t verify
How blockchain is revolutionizing crowdfundingAhmed Banafa
According to experts, there are five key benefits of crowdfunding platforms: efficiency, reach, easier presentation, built-in PR and marketing, and near-immediate validation of concept, which explains why crowdfunding has become an extremely useful alternative to venture capital (VC), and has also allowed non-traditional projects, such as those started by in-need families or hopeful creatives, a new audience to pitch their cause.
Blockchain technology and supply chain managementAhmed Banafa
Managing today’s supply chains is extremely complex. For many products, the supply chain can span over hundreds of stages, multiple geographical (international) locations, a multitude of invoices and payments, have several individuals and entities involved, and extend over months of time.
8 key tech trends in a post covid-19 world editedAhmed Banafa
COVID-19 has demonstrated the importance of digital readiness, which allows business and people’s life to continue as usual during pandemics.
Building the necessary infrastructure to support a digitized world and stay current in the latest technology will be essential for any business or countryto remain competitive in a post-COVID-19 world.
It’s clear that blockchain will revolutionize operations and processes in many industries and governments agencies if adopted, but its adoption requires time and efforts, in addition blockchain technology will stimulate people to acquire new skills, and traditional business will have to completely reconsider their processes to harvest the maximum benefits from using this promising technology. The following 10 trends will dominate blockchain technology in 2020:
Quantum Computing and Blockchain: Facts and Myths Ahmed Banafa
The biggest danger to Blockchain networks from quantum computing is its ability to break traditional encryption . Google sent shock waves around the internet when it was claimed, had built a quantum computer able to solve formerly impossible mathematical calculations–with some fearing crypto industry could be at risk . Google states that its experiment is the first experimental challenge against the extended Church-Turing thesis — also known as computability thesis — which claims that traditional computers can effectively carry out any “reasonable” model of computation
In this webinar Prof. Banafa will discuss in details the use of Blockchain in the following businesses: Insurance; Payments; Internet-of-Things (IoT); Supply Chain; Healthcare; Government; Identity; Advertising; Marketing; Banking.
Blockchain and Artificial Intelligence are two of the hottest technology trends right now. Even though the two technologies have highly different developing parties and applications, researchers have been discussing and exploring their combination. With both these technologies able to effect and enact upon data in different ways, their coming together makes sense, and it can take the exploitation of data to new levels. At the same time, the integration of machine learning and AI into blockchain, and vice versa, can enhance blockchain’s underlying architecture and boost AI’s potential.
First line of defense for cybersecurity : AIAhmed Banafa
The year 2017 wasn't a great year for cyber-security; we saw a large number of high-profile cyber attacks; including Uber, Deloitte, Equifax and the now infamous WannaCry ransomware attack, and 2018 started with a bang too with the hacking of Winter Olympics.
The frightening truth about increasingly cyber-attacks is that most businesses and the cybersecurity industry itself are not prepared. Despite the constant flow of security updates and patches, the number of attacks continues to rise.
Secure and Smart IoT in Energy Sector Ahmed Banafa
Improves the energy industry on a larger scale with “Smart X”:
More control over operations
Predicting and mitigating problems
Reduce process costs and improve efficiency
Increase customer satisfaction
Development of digital business models
IoT and Blockchain Challenges and RisksAhmed Banafa
The biggest challenge facing IoT security is coming from the very architecture of the current IoT ecosystem; it’s all based on a centralized model known as the server/client model. All devices are identified, authenticated and connected through cloud servers that support huge processing and storage capacities. The connection between devices will have to go through the cloud, even if they happen to be a few feet apart. While this model has connected computing devices for decades and will continue to support today IoT networks, it will not be able to respond to the growing needs of the huge IoT ecosystems of tomorrow.
Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

3. Secure and Smart Internet of Things
(IoT) Using Blockchain and AI
4. • By 2020, the Internet of Things (IoT) is predicted
to generate an additional $344B in revenues, as
well as to drive $177B in cost reductions.
• IoT and smart devices are already increasing
performance metrics of major US-based factories.
• They are in the hands of employees, covering
routine management issues and boosting their
productivity by 40-60% [1].
5. • The following list of predictions (Figure 1)
explores the state of IoT in 2019 and covering
IoT impact on many aspects business and
technology including Digital Transformation,
Blockchain, AI, and 5G.
6.
7. IoT Prediction 1: Growth in Data and
Devices
• By the end of this year there will be are
around 3.6 billion devices that are actively
connected to the Internet and used for daily
tasks according to IT Pro [8].
8. • With the introduction of 5G that will open the
door for more devices, and data traffic. You
can add to this trend the increase adoption of
edge computing which will make it easier for
business to process data faster and close to
the points of action [5].
9. IoT Prediction 2: IoT and Digital
Transformation
• IoT is a key driver of digital transformation in
several industries. Sensors, RFID tags, and
smart beacons have already started the next
industrial revolution. Market analysts predict
the number of connected devices in the
manufacturing industry will double between
2018 and 2020.
10. • These devices are a total game changer for the
many industries, disrupting every part of the
production process from development to
supply chain management.
• Manufacturers will be able to prevent delays,
improve production performance. Another
example; in 2019; 87% of healthcare
organizations will have adopted IoT
technology.
11. • The possibilities are endless for healthcare
organizations and the IoT—smart pills, smart
home care, personal healthcare management,
electronic health records, managing sensitive
data, and an overall higher degree of patient
care.
• This type of improvements can be applied to
many sectors vertically and horizontally [6][9].
12. IoT Prediction 3: More Investments in
IoT
• IoT’s undisputable impact has and will
continue to lure more startup venture
capitalists towards highly innovative projects
in hardware, software and services.
• Spending on IoT will hit 1.4 trillion dollars by
2021 according to the International Data
Corporation (IDC) [7].
13. • IoT is one of the few markets that have the
interest of the emerging as well as the
traditional venture capitalists. The spread of
smart devices and the increase dependency of
customers to do many of their daily tasks
using them, will add to the excitement of
investing in IoT startups.
14. • Customers will be waiting for the next big
innovation in IoT—such as smart mirrors that
will analysis your face and call your doctor if
you look sick, smart ATM machine that will
incorporate smart security cameras, smart
forks that will tell you how to eat and what to
eat, and smart beds that will turn off the lights
when everyone is sleeping [5][14].
15. IoT Prediction 4: Expansion of Smart
IoT
• IoT is all about connectivity and processing,
nothing will be a better example than smart
cities , but smart cities have been in a bit of a
holding pattern recently.
16. • Smart sensors around the neighborhood will
record everything from walking routes, shared car
use, building occupancy, sewage flow, and
temperature choice 24/7 with the goal of creating
a place that’s comfortable, convenient, safe, and
clean for those who live there.
• Once the model is perfected, it could be the
model for other smart neighborhoods and
eventually smart cities [2].
17. • Another area of spreading smart IoT is auto
industry with self-driving cars become a
normal occurrence in the next few years,
today tons of vehicles have a connected app
that shows up to date diagnostic information
about the car. This is done with IoT
technology, which is the heart of the
connected vehicle.
18. • Diagnostic information is not the only IoT
advancement that we will see in the next year
or so. Connected apps, voice search, and
current traffic information are a few other
things that will change the way we drive [2].
19. IoT Prediction 5: Artificial Intelligence
and IoT Data
• Artificial intelligence is the fundamental
ingredient needed to make sense of the vast
amount of data collected these days, and
increase its value for business.
• AI will help IoT data analysis in the following
areas: data preparation, data discovery,
visualization of streaming data, time series
accuracy of data, predictive and advance
analytics, and real-time geospatial and location
(logistical data). Here are a few examples.
20. IoT Prediction 6: Fog Computing & IoT
• Fog computing is a technology that distributed
the load of processing and moved it closer to
the edge of the network (sensors in case of
IoT). The benefits of using fog computing are
very attractive to IoT solution providers.
21. • Some of these benefits allow users minimize
latency, conserve network bandwidth, operate
reliably with quick decisions, collect and
secure a wide range of data, and move data to
the best place for processing with better
analysis and insights of local data.
• Microsoft just announced a $5 billion
investment in IoT, including fog/edge
computing [3][4][5].
22. • Hardware manufacturers like Cisco, HPE, Dell and
more are building specific infrastructure for the
edge deigned to be more physically rugged and
secure, and security vendors will start to offer
endpoint security solutions to their existing
services to prevent data loss, give insights into
network health and threat protection, include
privileged user control and application
whitelisting and control, that will help in the fast
adoption and spread of edge/fog computing
implementations by businesses [2].
23. IoT Prediction 7: IoT and Blockchain
• The current centralized architecture of IoT is
one of the main reasons for the vulnerability
of IoT networks.
• With billions of devices connected and more
to be added, IoT is a big target for cyber-
attacks, which makes security extremely
important.
24. • Blockchain offers new hope for IoT security for
several reasons. First, Blockchain is public,
everyone participating in the network of
nodes of the Blockchain network can see the
blocks and the transactions stored and
approves them, although users can still have
private keys to control transactions.
25. • Second, blockchain is decentralized, so there is
no single authority that can approve the
transactions eliminating Single Point of Failure
(SPOF) weakness. Third and most importantly,
it's secure—the database can only be
extended and previous records cannot be
changed.
26. • In the coming years manufactures will
recognize the benefits of having blockchain
technology embedded in all devices and
compete for labels like “Blockchain
Certified”[3][5].
27. IoT Prediction 8: IoT and
Standardization
• Standardization is one of the biggest
challenges facing growth of IoT—it’s a battle
among industry leaders who would like to
dominate the market at an early stage.
28. • Digital assistant devices, including HomePod,
Alexa, and Google Assistant, are the future
hubs for the next phase of smart devices, and
companies are trying to establish “their hubs”
with consumers, to make it easier for them to
keep adding devices with less struggle and no
frustrations [3][5].
29. • But what we have now is a case of
fragmentation. One possible solution is to
have a limited number of vendors dominating
the market, allowing customers to select one
and stick to it for any additional connected
devices, similar to the case of operating
systems we have now have with Windows,
Mac and Linux for example, where there are
no cross-platform standards [3][5].
30. • To understand the difficulty of standardization,
we need to deal with all three categories in the
standardization process: Platform, Connectivity,
and Applications.
• In the case of platform, we deal with UX/UI and
analytic tools, while connectivity deals with
customer’s contact points with devices, and last,
applications are the home of the applications
which control, collect and analyze data.
31. • All three categories are inter-related and we
need them all, missing one will break that
model and stall the standardization process
[3][5].
32. • There is no way to solve the problem of
fragmentation without a strong push by
organizations like IEEE or government
regulations to have common standards for IoT
devices [3][5].
33. IoT Prediction 9: IoT Skills Shortage
• While investment in the Internet of Things (IoT) is
set to reach over $1 trillion by 2020, according to
IDC, the need for IoT skills may just hamper this
growth.
• In fact, according to a Canonical report, 68% of
businesses still struggle to hire IoT experts [10].
• The latest Tech Cities Job Watch report from
Experis showed a 35% increase in the demand for
technology skills since this time last year, as
businesses look to harness the power of IoT
[11][13].
34. • The Tech Cities Job Watch report noted that
IoT has massively increased the number of
connected devices and has exploded the
volumes of data businesses have to process
and as a result, big data roles are important to
delivering success on IoT.
35. • The report found that businesses were willing
to pay for such skills, with big data
professionals commanding by far the highest
salaries and day rates of any other technology
discipline analyzed [13].
36. • Since connected devices also create many
more vulnerabilities to cyber threats for
businesses to contend with, security skills are
also in demand, the report found.
37. • There has been a 24% increase (year-on-year)
in the demand for IT Security contractors.
• Businesses are urgently plugging short term
security gaps and using contractors to train up
existing employees across the business and
are shifting focus to this more flexible
contractor model for IT security in response to
the demands for IoT [13].
38. • Universities cannot keep up with the demand,
so to deal with such shortage, companies have
established internal training programs to build
their own teams, upgrading the skills of their
own engineering teams and training new
talents.
• This trend will continue, representing an
opportunity for new engineers and a
challenge for companies [3][5].
