when uranium is mined, enriched, and
manufactured into nuclear fuel, (1)
which is delivered to a nuclear power
plant. After usage in the power plant,
the spent fuel is delivered to a
reprocessing plant (2) or to a final
repository (3) for geological disposition.
In reprocessing 95% of spent fuel can
be recycled to be returned to usage in a
power plant (4).

• Thailand freezes nuclear power plant plans (March 17th, 2011)
• Thailand has frozen its plans to build its own nuclearpower plants in the wake of the ongoing nuclear
crisis in Japan following a series of meltdowns at the quake-hit power complexin Fukushima.
• Mr Abhisit ‘personally does not favour the construction ofnuclear plants in Thailand.
• The U-turn by the government is certainto cheervarious civil groups that recently formedan alliance
to protest against the planned constructionof nuclear powerplants in up to eight short listed
provinces.
• Thailand’s decision to suspend its atomic power plans indefinitely followsa similar action by
Switzerland, which last week froze its proposal to replace and build new nuclearplants.
• Malaysia, which had intentionsto establishits first atomic power plant by 2021, has now said it wants
to learn from Japan before making its next move. India, meanwhile, will undergoa safety review of
its 20 reactors before committingto a plan to spend US$175 billionon nuclear energyover the next
20 years.
• Indonesia – which is planningfour plantsby 2025 – are of the view that governmentsshould look at
nuclear power as a secure energy supply to reduce global dependence onfossil fuels.

• Bangkok: Ruling out constructionof nuclear power plants, Thailand's military juntahas said it
will look into coal powered power plants to meet energyneeds of the country.
• National Council for Peace and Order chief Gen Prayuth Chan-ocha said officials have been
asked to come up with an energy plan that is secure, affordable and sustainable.
• A robust strategy to address energy issues is needed to achieveenergy security,he said.
• Noting that building a nuclearplant was not possible, Gen Prayuth said he had asked authorities
to study the possibilityand necessity ofbuilding a coal-fired powerplant and examine its
impacts on human healthand the environment.
• However, he did not specify as where the coal-firedpower plants would be built. He also
stressed the need of renewable energysources.
